"The central problem in the study of addiction is to explain why people repeatedly behave in ways they know are bad for them. For much of the previous century and until the present day, the majority of scientific and medical attempts to solve this problem were couched in terms of involuntary behavior; if people behave in ways they do not want, then this must be because the behavior is beyond their control and outside the realm of choice. An opposing tradition, which finds current support among scientists and scholars as well as members of the general public, is that so-called addictive behavior reflects an ordinary choice just like any other and that the concept of addiction is a myth. To these polarized views of addiction, the editors and chapter authors of this volume say a plague on both your houses. There has been an increasing recognition in recent literature on addiction that restricting possible conceptions of it to either of these extreme positions is unhelpful and is retarding progress on understanding the nature of addiction and what could be done about it. This book contains a range of views from philosophy, neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and the law on what exactly this middle ground between free choice and no choice consists of and what its implications are for theory, practice, and policy on addiction. The result amounts to a profound change in our thinking on addiction and how its devastating consequences can be ameliorated."

The main focus of this study is to discuss regarding microtransaction business practice and its negative effects towards youth and adolescents. In order to achieve that, the Author describes the main issues as the following: 1) How is the comparison of legal protection against microtransactions between Indonesia and Netherlands implemented? 2) Is the current legal system that is formulated by the Indonesian Government adequate in dealing with the dangers of microtransaction business practice for minors? 3) What is the ideal approach to tackling this problem in Indonesia currently? Based on the research conducted by the author, it is discovered that the current Indonesian legal system is severely lacking in comparison to Netherlands in handling microtransaction business practice in online video games. Therefore, in order to minimize the potential damages to Indonesia’s youth and adolescents, the Indonesian Government must adjust the social responsibility of video game business actors as well as spread the awareness of the negative effects of purchasing microtransaction products in public.

The purpose of this study is to achieve an understanding of internet addiction behaviors in young adults. This study uses qualitative method, using the theory based sampling method. The study collects its data through interviewing two participants aging between 18-24 years old. Study results shows that participants use the internet much longer and more frequently compared to the average internet user. They also spend an excessive amount of money to fulfill their internet needs. However, they usually take the available discount promotions to save money. Participants show full awareness about their behavior. However, they admit to having no ability to hold back their urge to use the internet. They also realize that their excessive use of the internet can result in negative outcomes in their lives. Both participants face problems in their social and academic lives. This is a result of excessive use and obsession of both participants towards the internet. The magnitudes of the problems vary depending on the seriousness of participant's addiction."

"Seeing a total solar eclipse is often described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, for many who have experienced totality, once-in-a-lifetime is simply not enough. They want more, and are willing to go to great lengths often at great expense to repeat the experience. What is it like to experience totality? What is it about the experience that motivates these eclipse chasers? Is there an eclipse chaser personality? Can eclipse chasing actually be described as an addiction? This book describes the people who dedicate their lives to chasing their dream."

"Biological research on addiction examines the neurobiological mechanisms of drug use and drug addiction, describing how the brain responds to addictive substances as well as how it is affected by drugs of abuse. The book's four main sections examine behavioral and molecular biology; neuroscience; genetics; and neuroimaging and neuropharmacology as they relate to the addictive process.
This volume is especially effective in presenting current knowledge on the key neurobiological and genetic elements in an individual’s susceptibility to drug dependence, as well as the processes by which some individuals proceed from casual drug use to drug dependence.
Biological research on addiction is one of three volumes comprising the 2,500-page series, Comprehensive addictive behaviors and disorders. This series provides the most complete collection of current knowledge on addictive behaviors and disorders to date. In short, it is the definitive reference work on addictions.
