"Drawing upon innovative theoretical and empirical scholarship presented at Narrative Matters 2012: Life and Narrative (The American University of Paris, May 29-June 1, 2012), this volume seeks to make a significant contribution to our understanding of the dynamic interplay of life and narrative by creatively addressing it from multiple angles. It features cross-disciplinary work by cutting-edge scholars in the social sciences and the humanities, including Jens Brockmeier, Jerome Bruner, Mark Freeman, Alexandra Georgakopoulou, James Phelan, and Brian Richardson. Four main intellectual contributions distinguish this volume. First, the contributors clearly detail the conceptual and empirical frameworks for describing the mutual construction of narrative and life. Second, the volume illustrates the tension between the need for narratives to hold and represent factual experiences and the power of narrative to conjure coherent worlds of imagination. Third, the volume explores the tension between the power of social and cultural forces to influence, or even impose, pre-configured interpretations on experience and the ingenuity of persons to create their own interpretations of experience. Finally, the problem of life and narrative is conceived as a cross-disciplinary problem.Cross-disciplinary study is crucial for thinking through basic problems in the social sciences and the humanities. There is still little dialogue among the disciplinary groups studying narrative, but these are conversations without boundaries, and limiting the scope leaves out critical perspectives that can advance knowledge of narrative, literature, and human beings. This volume aims to introduce a wide range of narrative scholars to the broader questions that narrative studies entails."

"Narratology mostly concerns with the 'cutting-edge' narrative found in literary works on one end the formulatics folklores on the other. What is left in between is a huge span of gray area where popular fictions reside...."

"This book emerges from within the everyday knowledge practices of International Relations (IR) scholarship and explores the potential of experimental writing as an alternative source of 'knowledge' and political imagination within the modern university and the contemporary structures of neoliberal government. It unlocks and foregrounds the power of writing as a site of resistance and a vehicle of transformation that is fundamentally grounded in reflexivity, self-crafting and an ethos of care. In an attempt to cultivate new sensibilities to habitual academic practice the project re-appropriates the skill of writing for envisioning and enacting what it might mean to be working in the discipline of IR and inhabiting the usual spaces and scenes of academic life differently. The practice of experimental writing that intuitively unfolds and develops in the book makes an important methodological intervention into conventional social scientific inquiry both regarding the politics of writing and knowledge production as well as the role and position of the researcher. The formal innovations of the book include the actualization and creative remaking of the Foucaultian genre of the 'experience book, ' which seeks to challenge scholarly routine and offers new experiences and modes of perception as to what it might mean to 'know' and to be a 'knowing subject' in our times. The book will be of interest to researchers engaged in critical and creative research methods (particularly narrative writing, autobiography, storytelling, experimental and transformational research), Foucault studies and philosophy, as well as critical approaches to contemporary government and studies of resistance."

Domestic Violence (DV) is the most lamentable form of gender inequality and a significant global issue for women worldwide. It is essential to conduct an in-depth analysis of the life histories of domestic violence survivors to comprehend their necessities, the factors that encourage or discourage women from fleeing their partners, their coping patterns, the factors that affect their decision-making, and the actions they take during each cycle of violence. This narrative research aimed to examine domestic violence (KDRT) survivors' stories. The study comprised four selected participants based on their employment status and educational background. This study employed structural and thematic narrative analysis. This study’s findings yielded four stories of women survivors of domestic violence and six primary themes, including personality shaped by parental upbringing; history of partner violence; the cycle of physical violence; the effect of violence on participants' behaviour, coping patterns, and health; survivors' endeavour to escape the cycle of violence; and final decision-making. This study concludes that women raised by authoritative and authoritarian parents can empower themselves to be more resilient and rise above the domestic violence-induced downturn. This research recommends that primary domestic violence prevention interventions commence in childhood with parenting. The parenting in question is authoritative, imparting egalitarian principles and directing self-empowerment."
