This study explores the dynamics of place ballet as the phenomenon of encounters in human’s daily life contributing to the shift in place attachment. Place ballet’s contribution as unconscious encounters in everyday routines result in a sense of familiarity and attachment towards a certain situation, elements, and place embodied in memory. In theory, place ballet achieves singularity through the repetitiveness of encounters occurring in everyday routines. However, there is a limitation on replicating everyday encounters, thus bringing disruptions in the everyday routine and evoking consciousness in the repeating of routine and the absence of place ballet. This study explores the shifting of everyday encounters, evoking the character’s consciousness of space and the shift from place attachment into detachment, as presented in the movie The Truman Show (1998) by Peter Weir. This paper identifies the shifting of a sense of consciousness as human interacts with the dynamics of place ballet, evoking shift in place attachment. The shifted perceptions of everyday encounters and place attachment on some degree indicates change in the feeling of existential insideness and human’s role in place."

"When the Scandinavian explorer Carl Bock, commissioned by the Dutch colonial authorities, undertook to make an expedition overland through Borneo in 1879, the island retained a sense of the exotic in the European imagination. Audiences were especially hungry for tales of the island’s headhunting Dayak inhabitants, a demand that Bock was happy to meet. In fact, he wrote two distinct narratives of the expedition: the Dutch-language report he had been tasked to write for the Dutch but also a longer, more entertainment-focused English-language travelogue for a broader audience. Comparing the two accounts, clearly based on the same underlying text but differing in many details and tone, provides critical insights into the unstable and unreliable nature of the colonial encounter as recounted in written sources. Such an analysis also reveals how these narratives were shaped retrospectively, to meet the expectations of different assumed audiences and quickly changing literary fashions."

"This article explores cross-cultural encounters and identities discourses in selected Polish and Russian travelogues about the Netherlands East Indies. Poles and Russians could travel to the Netherlands East Indies thanks to advantages afforded Europeans by the colonial system. Their occupations (for example, a privileged tourist, colonial scientist, diplomat) often made them suitable imperial agents. They defined themselves as Europeans but, as Eastern Europeans, they occupied an ambiguous position: Russians came from a land-based, economically backward “empire of the periphery“ (Boris Kagarlitsky 2008); Poles came from a semi-peripheral European nation subjected to foreign rule and, from their common experience of subjugation, some Polish authors were able to sympathize with the colonized peoples. Hence, a comparative approach leads to various insights into representations of colonial Indonesia."

"The Caribbean before Columbus is a new synthesis of the regions insular history on multiple scales: temporal, spatial, local, regional, environmental, social, and political. It combines the results of the authors 55 years of archaeological research with that of their colleagues. For the first time the complete histories of the major islands and island groups are elucidated, and new insights are gained through inter-island comparisons. The concepts of series and ages provide structure, but historical names, such as Taíno and Lucayan, are avoided. The authors challenge the conventional wisdom concerning island colonization, societal organization, interaction and transculturation, and other basic elements of cultural development and change. The emphasis is on elements that unite the Bahamas, Lesser Antilles, and Greater Antilles as a culture area, and also on their divergent pathways. Colonization is presented as a multifaceted wave-like process. Continuing ties to the surrounding mainland are highlighted. Interactions between residents and new colonists are recognized. New solutions are offered to the Huecoid problem, the Carib problem, the Taíno problem, and the evolution of social complexity, especially in Puerto Rico. These solutions required a rethinking of social organization and its expression on the landscape."
