"Penelitian ini membahas mengenai fenomena normalisasi eksploitasi diri yang dilakukanoleh pekerja paruh waktu (freelancer) di bidang industri kreatif dalam platform digital.Kondisi ini berkaitan dengan gig economy yang menawarkan kebebasan dalam bentukfleksibilitas bagi tenaga kerja untuk memilih dan melakukan pekerjaan mereka melaluiplatform digital. Studi sebelumnya menunjukkan bahwa kebebasan yang dimiliki olehonline freelancer sebenarnya terkekang oleh manajemen algoritmik dari platform digital,sehingga platform berusaha memproduksi consent dari pekerja. Online freelancermenghadapi manajemen algoritmik dengan membangun relasi dengan klien, memahamiliterasi digital, dan melakukan berbagai penyesuain. Namun, studi sebelumnyamengabaikan cost tambahan yang dikeluarkan oleh online freelancer yang mengarah padaeksploitasi diri. Pada penelitian yang dilakukan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatifdengan metode studi kasus ini, ditemukan bahwa pembentukan consent menjadi titik awalterjadinya eksploitasi diri yang dilakukan online freelancer. Diikuti dengan siasat baruyang digunakan dalam menghadapi teknologi, seperti pembentukan sistem gamifikasibaru bagi personal dan keterlibatan mereka dengan komunitas. Online freelancermelakukan pekerjaan ini dengan sukarela karena pekerjaan ini dinilai sebagai hobi yangmenguntungkan, perasaan senang saat melakukan hal yang disukai dan didukung denganpersepsi bahwa tindakan yang mereka lakukan adalah hal yang wajar. This research discusses the phenomenon of self-exploitation normalization carried out by

part-time workers (freelancers) in the creative industry within digital platforms. This

condition is related to the gig economy, which offers freedom in the form of flexibility

for workers to choose and perform their tasks through digital platforms. Previous studies

have shown that the freedom held by online freelancers is actually constrained by

algorithmic management of the digital platforms, leading the platforms to strive for the

production of consent from the workers. Online freelancers face algorithmic management

by building relationships with clients, understanding digital literacy, and making various

adjustments. However, previous studies have overlooked the additional costs incurred by

online freelancers, which lead to self-exploitation. Through this qualitative research with

a case study approach, it was found that the production of consent becomes the starting

point for the occurrence of self-exploitation among online freelancers. This is followed

by new strategies used in facing technology, such as forming new gamification systems

for personals and engaging with communities. Online freelancers engage in this work

voluntarily because it is seen as a profitable hobby, they enjoy doing it, and they perceive

their actions as reasonable. Therefore, they normalize the self-exploitation that occurs,

even though it has an impact on burnout conditions"

"Penelitian ini mengkaji proses kerja yang dijalani host live streaming dalam industri live shopping berbasis afiliasi yang mengarah pada kondisi eksploitasi diri. Studi-studi terdahulu cenderung membingkai host sebagai figur ideal yang menguntungkan bagi pihak lain, tanpa menelusuri realitas kerjanya secara mendalam. Padahal, pembingkaian tersebut sarat dengan ekspektasi performa yang dilekatkan kepada host yang dapat berdampak pada kondisi kerja mereka. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara mendalam dan observasi digital, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa eksploitasi diri terjadi dalam proses kerja host, dan hal ini muncul sebagai konsekuensi dari proses kerja yang hegemonik. Proses kerja yang hegemonik ini terbentuk melalui penyebaran ekspektasi platform dan audiens yang dikemas sebagai standar profesionalitas, lalu diinternalisasi host ke dalam rutinitas kerja siaran langsung. Dalam praktiknya, host mengandalkan kerja immaterial yang menuntut pelibatan dan kapitalisasi aspek-aspek personal sejak sebelum hingga setelah siaran. Akumulasi dari proses kerja yang berlangsung terus-menerus ini secara perlahan mereproduksi tuntutan atas diri sendiri, hingga host secara sadar bertindak sebagai pihak yang mengeksploitasi berbagai aspek personal mereka, mulai dari waktu, fisik, emosi, finansial, hingga kesadaran. Semua ini dijalani dengan anggapan bahwa pengorbanan diri merupakan bagian dari profesionalitas kerja, sehingga eksploitasi diri diterima sebagai sesuatu yang wajar dalam praktik kerja host.

This study examines the labor process undertaken by live streaming hosts within the affiliate-based live shopping industry, which leads to conditions of self-exploitation. Previous studies have often portrayed hosts as ideal figures who serve the interests of other parties, without critically examining the actual conditions of their work. These portrayals are often embedded with performance expectations that profoundly affect the hosts’ working conditions. Using a qualitative approach with data collected through in- depth interviews and digital observation, this study finds that self-exploitation emerges as a consequence of a hegemonic labor process. This process takes shape through the spread of platform and audience expectations, which are presented as professional standards and gradually internalized by hosts into their daily live-streaming routines. In practice, hosts rely on immaterial labor that demands the engagement and capitalization of personal aspects before, during, and after each session. The continuous nature of this labor gradually reproduces internal demands, leading hosts to consciously exploit various personal resources, including time, physical energy, emotional capacity, financial means, and cognitive focus. This process is sustained by the belief that personal sacrifice is a necessary element of professionalism, thereby normalizing self-exploitation as an accepted and routine part of the host’s working life."
