"Interface problems arise when there are two different materials, such as water and oil, or the same material at different states, such as water and ice. If partial or ordinary differential equations are used to model these applications, the parameters in the governing equations are typically discontinuous across the interface separating the two materials or states, and the source terms are often singular to reflect source/sink distributions along codimensional interfaces. Because of these irregularities, the solutions to the differential equations are typically nonsmooth or even discontinuous. As a result, many standard numerical methods based on the assumption of smoothness of solutions do not work or work poorly for interface problems."

"[This book covers recent advances in the development and usage of DUNE. It consists of a collection of 13 articles which mainly evolved from talks given at the First DUNE User Meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, 6.-8.10.2010. The articles nicely illustrate the advanced capabilities and the strong versatility of the DUNE framework. The first part presents extensions of the DUNE core modules, including the construction of local finite element spaces, a discretization toolbox, and two meta-grids, as well as a discussion of performance pitfalls. The second part introduces several external DUNE modules dealing with, e.g., reduced basis methods, unfitted discontinuous Galerkin methods, optimal control problems, and porous media applications. Specific methods and applications are subject of the third part, ranging from two-phase flow in porous media over the implementation of hybrid discontinuous Galerkin and heterogeneous multi-scale methods up to the coupling of DUNE with an existing finite element package.

"The central subject of the book is the generalization of Loewy's decomposition, originally introduced by him for linear ordinary differential equations, to linear partial differential equations. Equations for a single function in two independent variables of order two or three are comprehensively discussed. A complete list of possible solution types is given. Various ad hoc results available in the literature are obtained algorithmically. The border of decidability for generating a Loewy decomposition are explicitly stated. The methods applied may be generalized in an obvious way to equations of higher order, in more variables or systems of such equations."

"This book introduces finite difference methods for both ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) and discusses the similarities and differences between algorithm design and stability analysis for different types of equations. A unified view of stability theory for ODEs and PDEs is presented, and the interplay between ODE and PDE analysis is stressed. The text emphasizes standard classical methods, but several newer approaches also are introduced and are described in the context of simple motivating examples.
The book is organized into two main sections and a set of appendices. Part I addresses steady-state boundary value problems, starting with two-point boundary value problems in one dimension, followed by coverage of elliptic problems in two and three dimensions. It concludes with a chapter on iterative methods for large sparse linear systems that emphasizes systems arising from difference approximations. Part II addresses time-dependent problems, starting with the initial value problem for ODEs, moving on to initial boundary value problems for parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs, and concluding with a chapter on mixed equations combining features of ODEs, parabolic equations, and hyperbolic equations. The appendices cover concepts pertinent to Parts I and II. "This book treats dynamic stability of structures under nonconservative forces. It is not a mathematics-based, but rather a dynamics-phenomena-oriented monograph, written with a full experimental background. Starting with fundamentals on stability of columns under nonconservative forces, it then deals with the divergence of Eulers column under a dead (conservative) loading from a view point of dynamic stability. Three experiments with cantilevered columns under a rocket-based follower force are described to present the verifiability of nonconservative problems of structural stability. Dynamic stability of columns under pulsating forces is discussed through analog experiments, and by analytical and experimental procedures together with related theories. Throughout the volume the authors retain a good balance between theory and experiments on dynamic stability of columns under nonconservative loading, offering a new window to dynamic stability of structures, promoting student- and scientist-friendly experiments."
