Penelitian ini didasari pertanyaan utama "mengapa wanita Cina di Indonesia tidak terlalu terlihat aktualisasi peran sosialnya?" Kemudian, apakah hal itu terjadi karena posisi mereka yang "minoritas ganda"? Punyakah mereka keinginan untuk menunjukkan peran sosialnya di masyarakat? Bagaimana bentuknya dan bidang apa saja yang dipilihnya? Faktor apa yang menghambat atau mendorongnya? Serta pertanyaan-pertanyaan lain seputar hal itu yang sangat menarik untuk dicari jawabnya. Fokus penelitian ini berkaitan erat dengan prilaku manusia yang sulit diukur, karena itu digunakan metodologi penelitian kualitatif fenomenologis yang berbasis pada perspektif interaksi simbolik. Digunakannya metodologi ini memungkinkan pengungkapan fakta atau kebenaran empirik tidak saja dari sisi empiri indrawi, logis, dan etisnya, tapi juga empiri trasendentalnya. Analisis terhadap jawaban 101 responden atas kuesioner yang diberikan, yang dipertajam melalui pengamatan berperan serta (action research) dan wawancara terhadap beberapa tokoh, menghasilkan beberapa simpulan, antara lain bahwa sebagai makhluk sosial wanita Cina di Jabodetabek walaupun ada pada posisi ?minoritas ganda? namun tetap memiliki keinginan untuk mengaktualisasikan peran sosial mereka. Bidang sosial yang menjadi pilihan utama adalah keagamaan, disamping pilihan bidang-bidang lainnya, termasuk bidang politik. Penghambat aktualisasi peran sosial mereka adalah telah terjadinya proses "eksklusivikasi" yang dijalani secara sadar ataupun tidak, melalui 4 aspek kehidupan sosial mereka yaitu tradisi, bahasa, pendidikan, dan lingkungan. Kesadaran diri yang semakin besar bahwa mereka adalah bagian dari masyarakat Indonesia, merupakan faktor pendorong utama terjadinya aktualisasi peran sosial mereka, di samping faktor-faktor lain termasuk faktor materi di dalamnya.
Actualization Of Chinese Women`s Social Role In Jabodetabek. This research is based on a primary question "Why the actualization of Chinese women's social role is not frequently seen in Indonesia?"; Does it happen because of their "double minority" position? ; Do they have willingness to show their social role in society? ; And some other questions around the issue which are interesting to find the answer. The focus of this research relates to human behavior which is hard to measure, so this research uses qualitative research methodology which is based on symbolic interaction perspective. An analysis on 101 respondents' answers to the questionnaires, and the result of action research and deep interview with some people who have been chosen, give us some conclusions. One of them: as human beings, even though Chinese women in Jabodetabek are on double minority position, they still have the willingness to actualize their social role. The area that becomes their primary choice is in religion, but some of them choose other areas like arts, sports, even politics. Their primary obstacle for actualizing the role in social life is the process of exclusiveness that has happened and has been carried out in their daily lives whether they realize it or not. It happens on their four social living aspects: tradition, language, education, and social environment. The main factor that has motivated them is their self awareness as part of Indonesian society. However, the material interest also has a slight influence on them.

Skripsi ini memaparkan tentang pakaian wanita Cina secara umum dan berfokus pada satu pakaian wanita Cina, yakni q¨ªp¨¢o (yang juga dikenal dengan nama cheongsam) secara khusus. Penulisan skripsi ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan fungsi dan makna q¨ªp¨¢o dan apakah q¨ªp¨¢o dapat menunjukka identitas kecinaan seorang wanita Cina. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptifanalisis dan studi pustaka dengan penggunaan buku-buku referensi maupun artikel dalam jurnal ilmiah. Berdasarkan metode penelitian yang dipakai serta data-data yang didapat, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa q¨ªp¨¢o atau cheongsam adalah pakaian yang tercipta pada masa masyarakat Cina tradisional yang berkembang dan masih menunjukkan keberadaannya hingga masa modern. Walaupun dalam perkembangannya q¨ªp¨¢o telah menyerap unsur (mode) Barat, q¨ªp¨¢o tetap mempertahankan unsur khas Cina yang dimilikinya. Sehingga dapat dikatakan, q¨ªp¨¢o adalah satu-satunya pakaian wanita tradisional Cina yang tetap ada hingga saat ini, yang tetap dapat merepresentasikan budaya Cina dan identitas kecinaan.
This thesis analyses Chinese women's dress in general and focuses on one Chinese women's dress, Q¨ªp¨¢o (Æì ÅÛ) (which also known as cheongsam) in particular. The objective of this thesis is to explain the function and meaning of q¨ªp¨¢o and also whether q¨ªp¨¢o can show the Chinese identity of a Chinese woman. The method used in this research is the descriptive-analytical method and literature study using references from books, articles, and scientific journals. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that q¨ªp¨¢o is the dress that was created in China¡¯s traditional era and still exist in the modern time. Even though in its development q¨ªp¨¢o has absorbed Western fashion, q¨ªp¨¢o still retain its signature Chinese elements. In the end, q¨ªp¨¢o is the only Chinese women¡¯s traditional dress that still exists until now while able to represents the Chinese culture and Chinese women's identity.

Abstrak :
The end of a nineteeth century witnessed paradox among the Chinese in colonial Java. On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt b the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their childern in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become "civilized subject", on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role olayed by "enlightened" Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girl know to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen) who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also perfomed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan's enlightning achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation;s women;s movements.
