"ABSTRAKMakalah ini melaporkan analisis tentang penggambaran peran gender perempuan dalam video musik terbaru tahun 2015 oleh grup band perempuan asal Korea (termasuk Girl’s Day’s Hello Bubble, SNSD’s Lion Heart, Oh My Girl’s Cupid, Miss A’s Only You, dan Red Velvet’s Ice Cream Cake). Video musik populer Korea telah mendominasi ruang media Asia selama dua dekade terakhir, dan telah menjadi agen yang berpotensi dalam membentuk pandangan masyarakat tentang pengertian gender. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji penggambaran peran gender sekaligus memvalidasi stereotip, serta, pandangan masyarakat tentang kekuatan perempuan dalam masyarakat bersangkutan melalui gambar yang ditampilkan dalam video. Dengan menggunakan mise-en-scene dalam studi film dan kategori Erving Goffman tentang penggambaran perempuan di media (1979), penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa representasi perempuan dalam video menggambarkan kategori Goffman tentang representasi perempuan di media, juga stereotip peran gender dalam masyarakat. Representasi perempuan yang melakukan peran gender memvalidasi stereotip gender, dan juga merefleksikan nilai perempuan dalam masyarakat.

ABSTRACTThis paper reports an analysis on gender roles portrayals of women in recent 2015 Korean girl group music videos (including Girl’s Day’s Hello Bubble, SNSD’s Lion Heart, Oh My Girl’s Cupid, Miss A’s Only You, and Red Velvet’s Ice Cream Cake). Korean popular music videos have been dominating Asian media space for the last two decades, and have become a potential agent in shaping the society’s view on gender notions. This research aims to examine the gender roles performances which are validating stereotypes, as well as, society’s view on women’s power in the respected society through the images portrayed in the videos. By using mise-en-scene in film studies and Erving Goffman’s depictions of women images in media (1979), this study reveals that the representations of women in the videos portray Goffman’s depictions of women images and also the stereotypical gender roles performances. The images of women performing gender roles are validating gender stereotypes, and are also suggesting a reflection of women’s value in the society."

"Dance Cover merupakan salah satu kegiatan mengikuti gerakan tarian dari para artis K-pop. Anggota dance cover dituntut untuk memiliki kemiripan dari segi gerakan,kostum ,postur tubuh serta ekspresi yang ditampilkan. Namun, perilaku tersebut sering mendapatkan stereotip buruk di dalam masyarakat Indonesia. Oleh karena itu, melalui penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode wawancara mendalam dan pengamatan berperan ini saya akan mencoba untuk melihat identitas dan ekspresi gender serta tanggapan dari keluarga dan teman sebaya terhadap identitas dan ekspresi gender yang mereka tunjukkan. Dari penelitian yang dilakukan terhadap enam orang remaja pria yang mengikuti dance cover terlihat bahwa identitas gender mereka adalah laki-laki,namun mereka mengekspresikan gender mereka secara androgini dan sudah mulai ada keluarga serta teman-teman sebaya mereka yang tidak bermasalah dengan ekspresi gender yang mereka tunjukkan.

Dance cover is one of the activities to follow the dance move from the K-pop artist. All the members of dance cover need to have the similarities in their dance relate to costume, posture and expression with the K-pop who they covered. However their behavior was often get a bad stereotype in Indonesia society. Therefore with this research with using qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and participative observation methods, I will try to describe their identity and gender expression as well as feedback from their family and friends from the identity and gender expression as their appearance. The research was conducted against six boys who followed a dance cover showed that the identity of their gender were a boy but they not expressed their gender as masculine. They express the gender as a androgyny and nowadays their family and some friends not bothered at all with their gender expression that they show up."

"Video musik merupakan salah satu platform untuk pertukaran budaya. Walaupun banyak yang mempermasalahkan bagaimana orang Barat merepresentasikan orang Timur berdasarkan prasangka tertentu, masalah ini masih ditemukan di berbagai video musik kontemporer. Representasi merupakan salah satu isu penting saat mencoba merepresentasikan budaya lain dengan benar. Data yang dipilih dalam artikel ini adalah `Lean On` (2015), sebuah video musik yang melibatkan budaya India. Dengan membahas konten visual dalam video tersebut menggunakan teori semiotika Barthes dan Orientalism dari Said, artikel ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa ada paradoks dalam representasi wanita India. Hasil artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa penggambaran yang ada merendahkan wanita India sehingga menciptakan sebuah paradoks dalam representasinya. Hasil ini juga menunjukkan bahwa penggambaran seperti ini menguntungkan orang Barat lebih daripada orang India karena hubungan kedua budaya yang sudah ada. Hasil ini akan memberikan kontribusi kepada studi gender dan representasi dengan meningkatkan kesadaran bahwa representasi gender yang melibatkan budaya Barat dan Timur masih perlu dikritik.

Music video is one of the platforms for cultural exchange to happen. Although a lot of people problematize how the westerners represent the East based on prejudice, a lot of contemporary music videos still has this problem. Representation is one of the main issues when trying to represent a different culture correctly. The chosen data for this article is `Lean On` (2015), a music video that heavily involves Indian culture. This article examines how the Indian women and culture are portrayed in the video. By examining the visual content in the video using Barthes` semiotic model and then analysing it with Hall`s representation concept and Said`s orientalism theory, this article aims to prove that there is a paradox in the representation of Indian women. The finding suggests that the depiction of Indian women is patronizing so it creates a paradox in the representation. It also suggests that the depiction benefits the westerners more than the Indian because of the existing power dynamic between the cultures. The finding of this paper will contribute to studies on gender and representation by raising awareness that gender representation involving the East and the West still needs to be criticised."

"Youtube kini telah menjadi salah satu situs internet pilihan yang digunakan untuk bertukar informasi dalam bentuk video. Terlebih lagi, situs ini memberikan akses yang mudah bagi penggunanya untuk berkomentar secara bebas dan direktif terhadap video yang ditonton. Dalam skripsi ini, penulis akan membahas video musik If I Were a Boy (2010) karya Beyonce Knowles beserta komentar penontonnya di Youtube. Penulis berpendapat bahwa secara tekstual video musik ini menciptakan konstruksi tersendiri, yakni menguatkan norma patriarki yang ada di masyarakat. Berbeda dengan penelitian yang sudah banyak dilakukan, penulis tidak berhenti pada tahap ini. Dengan menerapkan konsep encoding-decoding milik Stuart Hall (1973), penulis melihat adanya sikap kritis penonton yang ditunjukkan melalui banyaknya jumlah respon. Terkait dengan tiga posisi penonton milik Hall, penulis menemukan sedikit perbedaan dari segi jumlah responden yang menempati masing-masing posisi tersebut. Pada kenyatannya, fenomena ini merupakan bentuk nyata dari adanya cyberculture dimana penonton memanfaatkan Youtube sebagai sebuah ruang untuk memaknai teks digital dan bernegosiasi dengan stereotip gender dengan memberikan respon.

Youtube is one of the favorite sites to share videos. Moreover,it facilitates the users to give a free and direct comment toward the videos they watch. This undergraduate thesis examines the music video entiled If I Were a Boy (2010) by Beyonce Knowles as well as the authentic responses from the viewers in Youtube. I argue that this music video creates a conventional gender construction which perpetuates the patriarchal norms in the society. As an attempt to give a new perspective on the similar kind of research, I do not stop at this point. Applying the concept of encoding-decoding by Stuart Hall (1973), I found the audience's being critical which can be seen from the total number of the responses and the controversy within. In accordance to the three hypothetical position argued by Hall, I found a different portion of the audience in each position. As a matter of fact, this phenomenon contributes to the cyberculture in which Youtube is seen as a functional space to make meaning of a digital text and negotiate with the constructed stereotype by giving comments."
