"What would a history that put women at the centre of the rise and fall of kingdoms be like? When the armies of Khubilai arrived on Java in 1293, they found themselves in the middle of two warring states. Two historical traditions developed concerning the ensuing events: the official Chinese dynastic records in which no women are mentioned, and a number of Javanese histories and poems in which everything depends upon the actions and fates of certain women. The Chinese account has long been regarded as factual, whilst the Javanese versions have been dismissed as mere romance, their women stereotypical representations of male fantasies."

This paper discusses the problem of mapping in the Dutch East Indies naval expedition ti confront piracy in the Riau Islands and Java Sea.The problem of pirates in the Malay Archipelago is an unfinished phenomenon. This issue triggers the attention of maritime history and regional studies to look for the symptoms that make pirates endemic in certain areas and periods. In the case of 19th-century piracy in the western waters of the archipelago, some historians argue that colonialism was the main trigger for the Malay rulers to move their pirate fleet as a form of resistance to the oppressive and exclusive trading system by the Europeans. Therefore, the structural changes from colonialism in the traditional maritime world affect the emergence of pirates in the archipelago, especially the Riau Islands and the Java Sea. This study uses the historical method by analyzing documents published by the colonial government and newspapers during the 19th century."

Gambling is an activity bet or risking something of value. Gambling usually involves several important factors including the perpetrators of gambling, gambling location, and gambling itself. Gambling in the past has a track record history through inscriptions. Inscriptions keep the historical record is the inscription sima, sima inscription in addition there are also other supporting data speerti script and also relief. The supporting data also provide a clear picture of the future of gambling in ancient Java. Based on comparison of key data to the content of literary texts, the gambling exists and appears in ancient Javanese period but gambling on the manuscript has not been found in contemporary inscriptions. Theories entry of culture and religion of India to Indonesia does not seem to be followed by the entry of gambling into the culture of Indonesia. Ethnographic data also show that the current traditional gambling is different from gambling in India. Based on that data also reinforces the assumption that traditional gambling such as cock fighting, fighting goats, and pigs fighting has continued until now. The forms of gambling animal fights that took place today is a business and community efforts to maintain it. Cockfighting sustained throughout the corners of Java and Bali, fighting goats or sheep are still preserved by the people of West Java, the pig race is still preserved by the people of Soil and race racing pigeons by the people of West Java is a form of culture that still survives to this day."

"The end of a nineteeth century witnessed paradox among the Chinese in colonial Java. On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt b the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their childern in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become "civilized subject", on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role olayed by "enlightened" Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girl know to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen) who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also perfomed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan's enlightning achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation;s women;s movements."

"The article discusses the narrative of colonial violence attached to the objects displayed in the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta. Taking the colonial military expedition to Banten in 1808 as a case study, this paper analyses the exhibition to show the interplay between museum as a product of colonialism and its focus on regionalism, its role in post-colonial nation-state-formation promoting national identity building, and the complexities of addressing violence. It argues that, as the museum engages with the discourse of coloniality and concurrently emphasizes national identity building, it inadvertently marginalizes the narrative of colonial violence. The findings show that, despite the abundant references to events and processes of direct and structural violence, the phenomenon of violence as an instrumental practice of colonialism has never been discussed or made the object of explicit analysis in the museum. Instead, the museum promotes a belief in a benign and benevolent Dutch imperialism."
