"Although the last decade has seen steady progress towards wider acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, LGBTQ residential and commercial areas have come under increasing pressure from gentrification and redevelopment initiatives. As a result many of these neighborhoods are losing their special character as safe havens for sexual and gender minorities. Urban planners and municipal officials have sometimes ignored the transformation of these neighborhoods and at other times been complicit in these changes. Planning and LGBTQ Communities brings together experienced planners, administrators, and researchers in the fields of planning and geography to reflect on the evolution of urban neighborhoods in which LGBTQ populations live, work, and play. The authors examine a variety of LGBTQ residential and commercial areas to highlight policy and planning links to the development of these neighborhoods. Each chapter explores a particular urban context and asks how the field of planning has enabled, facilitated, and/or neglected the specialized and diverse needs of the LGBTQ population.A central theme of this book is that urban planners need to think "beyond queer space" because LGBTQ populations are more diverse and dispersed than the white gay male populations that created many of the most visible gayborhoods. The authors provide practical guidance for cities and citizens seeking to strengthen neighborhoods that have an explicit LGBTQ focus as well as other areas that are LGBTQ-friendly. They also encourage broader awareness of the needs of this marginalized population and the need to establish more formal linkages between municipal government and a range of LGBTQ groups. Planning and LGBTQ Communities also adds useful material for graduate level courses in planning theory, urban and regional theory, planning for multicultural cities, urban geography, and geographies of gender and sexuality"--
"Planning and LGBTQ Communities gives planners concrete, practical guidance to creating inclusive communities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals, couples and families. Each chapter, written by experienced city planners, administrators, and researchers, examines specific urban contexts and how city planners facilitated or neglected the needs of LGBTQ populations. As the last decade has brought major cultural and legislative victories for LGBTQ people, "gayborhoods" and other LGBTQ residential and commercial areas have changed in character. Planning and LGBTQ Communities examines these changes, the pressures that cause them, and the role that planners and municipal officials have had in the gentrification and redevelopment of these spaces. With case studies from the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa, this book offers planners around the world a way to better accommodate and build for marginalized people"--"

"From the perspective of the predominantly heterosexual society, giving a tribute to the LGBTQ+ community in performance can be considered an act of respect. However, such an act can be counterproductive to the LGBTQ+ community. To build a case in seeing the root of the problem, this thesis examines Taylor Swift’s music video and song “You Need to Calm Down,” which was purposely made for her advocacy for LGBTQ+ people. It is argued that the music video does not depict LGBTQ+ people in the most realistic way as it prolongs or extends the harmful stereotypes of LGBTQ+ people, and the gender performances that are acted out or played in the music video do not conform to the gender performativity concept that has become the ground of LGBTQ+ rights. Additionally, the said gender performances are also considered unfavorable as they compare the struggle of LGBTQ+ people to a personal problem that shows a heteronormative bias. Using the analysis of cinematic devices as a method, it is concluded that Swift’s advocacy for LGBTQ+ people has its complexity that falls on heteronormative bias, problematic gender performativity, and unfavorable stereotypes.

This study seeks to explore how queer muslims create alternative spaces by reorienting understandings of gender and sexuality in Islam. Traditional Islamic interpretations, which are typically heteronormative, co-opt the spaces and modes of narrative exchange that are used by queer groups, resulting in a sense of disorientation. For this reason, queer muslims create alternative spaces where they can exchange inclusive Islamic narratives. This study discovers that queer muslims use marginalization experiences as a tool to construct identities and alternative spaces. These spaces are neither exclusive or separatist, but are inhabited by queer and hetero groups, particularly ustad or ulama, through reorientation practices that involve rereading marginalized experiences and Islamic narratives. The knowledge of Islam that is shared is rooted on the principles of justice and equality, as well as rahmatan lil alamin. However, alternative spaces are not a vacuum of heteronormativity, therefore forcing queer muslims and ulama to engage in tactics such as navigating between group networks and heteronormativity structures, which can create a gap between the two groups. Intermediary persons who can access both groups' networks and coordinate resources become important in expanding and opening up new alternative spaces."

""Sex work is a subject of significant contestation across academic disciplines, as well as within legal, medical, moral, feminist, political and socio-cultural discourses. A large body of research exists, but much of this focuses on the sale of sex by women to men and ignores other performances, practices, meanings and embodiments in the contemporary sex industry. A queer agenda is important in order to challenge hetero-centric gender norms and to develop new insights into how gender, sex, power, crime, work, migration, space/place, health and intimacy are understood in the context of commercial sexual encounters. Queer Sex Work explores what it might mean to 'be', 'do' and 'think' queer(ly) in the study and practice of commercial sex. It brings together a multiplicity of empirical case studies - including erotic dance venues, online sex working, pornography, grey sexual economies, and BSDM - and offers a variety of perspectives from academic scholars, policy practitioners, activists and sex workers themselves. In so doing, the book advances a queer politics of sex work that aims to disrupt heteronormative logics whilst also making space for different voices in academic and political debates about commercial sex. This unique and multidisciplinary volume will be indispensable for scholars and students of the global sex trade and of gender, sexuality, feminism and queer theory more broadly, as well as policymakers, activists and practitioners interested in the politics and practice of sex work in local, national and international contexts""

This article discusses the influence of a celebrity as a role model, especially on LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Plus) identity. As social media and the entertainment industry are becoming more extensive than ever, influencers and celebrities serve as role models in lifestyle, social issues, educational concerns, perceptions, and understanding of the world. The effect of media exposure of an influencer or celebrity as a role model is incredibly huge, affecting the audience's personalities and lifestyle daily. This notion also applies to those who adhere to the LGBTQ+ community. By adopting the media ecology theory--which refers to the study of how media and communication processes affect human perception, feeling, emotion, and value (West & Turner, 2007)--and taking the case of the response of Jojo Siwa's coming out news (Twersky, 2021), this paper studies how the LGBTQ+ community perceives this issue. This article focuses on the community's reactions, acts, and feelings towards the announcement. The study found that admiring celebrities as role models can be sources of dignity, inspiration, and support, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community.

"This book promotes dialogue and debate on the understudied and under-theorized topic of queer masculinities and education, offering scholarly contributions to critical masculinity studies, to gender and sexuality studies and to the field of education. The essays adopt a range of approaches from empirical studies to reflective theorizing, and address themselves to three separate educational realms, the K-12 level, the collegiate level, and the level in popular culture, which could be called ?cultural pedagogy?.
