"When newspapers in the colloquial Malay language appeared in the Dutch East Indies in the middle of the nineteenth century, they did more than just publish news reports and advertisements. They also created a new platform for the telling and distribution of literary fiction. In effect, literary texts soon played an important role in the vernacular print media. The first part of this article analyses the attraction of newspaper literature from the perspective of both the reader and the editor in general and gives a survey of the various forms of literary genres which can be found in newspapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the second part, one particular serialized novel will be discussed in detail to demonstrate how the mode of publication also influenced the way stories were told."

"Struktur bahasa Melayu Klasik dapat ditemukan pada karya sastra Melayu Klasik abad ke-13 hingga ke-19, seperti Hikayat Indranata. Hikayat Indranata adalah hikayat yang digunakan sebagai sumber data dalam kajian ini. Salah satu struktur bahasa Melayu Klasik yang dapat dikaji adalah klausa verbal. Klausa verbal bahasa Melayu Klasik dapat dikelompokan dalam tiga kelompok, yaitu klausa verbal transitif konstruksi aktif, klausa verbal transitif konstruksi pasif, dan klausa verbal intransitif. Struktur klausa verbal bahasa Melayu Klasik dapat dilihat dari afiks penanda verba dan pola urutan subjek-predikat. Melalui analisis ini, didapatkan bahwa konstruksi klausa verbal bahasa Melayu Klasik cenderung menggunakan afiks sebagai penanda predikat verba dengan pola urutan klausa subjek-predikat. Ketiga jenis klausa verbal ini juga terdapat pada jenis klausa verbal bahasa Indonesia sehingga keduanya bisa dibandingkan. Hasil perbandingan keduanya menunjukkan bahwa struktur klausa verbal bahasa Melayu Klasik dan bahasa Indonesia tidak jauh berbeda.

Classical Malay Language construction can be found in Classical Malay literature around 13th century until 19th century, such as Hikayat Indranata. Hikayat Indranata will be used as the data of this study. One of Classical Malay Language that can be analyzed is verbal clause. The verbal clause of Classical Malay Language can be grouped into three classes, i.e. active transitive verbal clause, passive transitive verbal clause, and intransitive verbal clause. The structure of verbal clause in Classical Malay Language can be seen from the affixation as sign of verb and the arrangement of subject-predicate.

Through this study, we got that the construction of verbal clause of Classical Malay Language are mostly using the affixation as the sign of verb with subject-predicate arrangement. These three kinds of verbal clause also can be found in bahasa. Therefore, verbal clause from both languages (Malay and bahasa) can be compared. The result of this comparison shows that verbal clause in Classical Malay Language and bahasa Indonesia is not too different."
