"This article uses concepts of magical realism by Wendy B. Faris to analyze Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. We analyze elements of magical realism of the work in mapping discourses between the text and the real life. The chosen material object that published earlier than the theory we chose make this work contributes to describe the trace of the civilization development; event of in-betweeness of human consciousness. However, we have found that A Midsummer Night’s Dream is only a magical realism-like mode, since realism is dominant in the text as the trace of modernity. Meanwhile, the characteristics of Magical Realism that is postulated by Faris is in-between realism and fantasy as a trace of transition era; modern to postmodern."

"This book presents new insights into Freud’s famous “discovery” of the unconscious and the subsequent development of psychoanalytic theories. The authors explore the original context in which these ideas arose and the central debate about mind as matter or something that transcends matter. In the course of this examination, it is demonstrated that Freud was influenced not only by the 19th century scientific milieu, but also by ancient cultures. While it is known that Freud was an avid collector of ancient artifacts and generally interested in these older cultures, this book systematically investigates their profound effect on his thinking and theorizing. Two major influences, Egyptian mythology and Jewish mysticism are analyzed in terms of similarities to Freud’s emerging ideas about the mind and its diseases.

This paper examines how African American actors roles in The Help (2011), a movie directed by Tate Taylor, represent Magical Negro as an act to legitimate racial discrimination and black American stereotype under white supremacy. The setting of this movie is during social movement era in Mississippi around 1960s. The story is about Skeeter, an Ole Miss graduated woman, who returns to her hometown to become a writer and to work as a young journalist and columnist for a local newspaper in house cleaning section. During her work as a journalist, Skeeter meets Aibileen, her friend’s black maid. With the help of several black maids, she starts a book project about racial discrimination in Jackson, Mississippi. This paper analyzes representation of Magical Negro characters and the scene which legitimates white supremacy through actions of the characters. The paper reveals a stark contradiction in the film. On one hand, the film explicitly raises the theme of racial discrimination, but on the other hand, it reinforces the ideology of white supremacy. Reviews on previous researches about the same issue are analyzed as well as character and scene analysis from the movie in order to reach objective. This paper concludes that this movie uses Magical Negro concept to legitimate white supremacy towards black people."
