"Tesis ini membahas pergerakan tokoh utama Ahmad Ashmawy Mulloy sebagai teroris Muslim-Amerika di Amerika dalam novel Terrorist (2006) karya John Updike. Tesis ini juga membahas sikap Updike terhadap terorisme yang tercermin dalam novel ini. Dengan menggunakan teori unsur-unsur novel dan konsep Pierre Bourdieu mengenai arena (field), habitus, dan kapital, hasil analisis menunjukan Ahmad menjadi teroris karena dipengaruhi oleh ruang sosialnya di Amerika yaitu kelompok Muslim, non-Muslim, dan kelompok teroris. Pergerakan Ahmad sebagai teroris berada dalam arena teroris dan posisi Ahmad bergerak mendekati pencapaian posisi syahid (kapital simbolik) melalui beberapa upaya dan strategi yang dilakukannya untuk melaksanakan rencana jihad dengan bom bunuh diri. Pergerakan ini berhenti karena ia mengurungkan niatnya, menyadari kekeliruannya (insaf), dan memutuskan keluar dari arena teroris sehingga tidak terjadi pengeboman dan posisi syahid tidak tercapai. Berdasarkan analisis pergerakan ini, perspektif posisi tiga tokoh yang membangun tema terorisme, dan alur novel tanpa pengeboman, sikap Updike terhadap terorisme dalam novel ini yaitu anti-terorisme.

This thesis describes the movement of the main character named Ahmad Ashmawy Mulloy as Muslim-American terrorist in America in the novel of Terrorist (2006) by John Updike. This thesis also discusses the attitude of Updike towards terrorism that is reflected in this novel. By using theories of the elements of novel and Pierre Bourdieu?s sociological approach with the concepts of field, habitus, and capital, the result of the analysis shows that Ahmad becomes a terrorist because he is affected by his social space in America namely groups of Muslim, non-Muslim, and terrorist group. Ahmad?s movement as a terrorist is in the field of terrorist and Ahmad?s position moves closer to the achievement of martyr position (shahid) (symbolic capital) through some efforts and strategies done by him to implement a plan of jihad with suicide bombing. This movement is stopped because he canceled his intention, realized his mistake (converted, insaf), and decided to get out of the field of terrorist, as a result there is no terrorist bombing and the position of a martyr is not achieved. Based on the study of the movement, the perspective of the position of the three main characters that build the theme of terrorism, and the plot of the novel without bombing, Updike?s attitude towards terrorism in this novel is anti-terrorism."

"Kedudukan autos pahlawan olahraga mempunyai peran lebih dari sekedar atlit dalam masyarakat majemuk Amerika sejak tahun 1950an. Mereka tidak hanya dituntut untuk mendominasi bidang olahraganya tetapi juga mewakili perjuangan berbagai kelompok dalam proses penerapan multikulturalisme. Isu-isu yang timbul yaitu pengakuan identitas kolektif dan berbagai isu lain sehubungan dengan perubahan tradisi dalam institusi olahraga tersebut. Tiger Woods seorang pemain golf profesional yang mendominasi bidang olahraganya menjadi sarana dari isu-isu berbagai kelompok yang saling bertentangan, saling mendominasi ataupun benegosiasi. Tiger Woods yang dalam hal ini menjadi media bersikap pragmatis dengan memanfaatkan kembali isu-isu tersebut bagi kepentingan pribadi maupun kepentingan kelompok lain.Melalui pendekatan kualitatif dan cultural studies, dengan menganalisa representasi tokoh Tiger Woods maka dapat ditunjukkan adanya tuntutan suatu media yang dapat mengakomodasi berbagai benturan dan dukungan dalam berbagai kelompok yang ada dalam masyarakat Amerika sehubungan dengan proses multikulturalisme. Representasi dari Tiger Woods yang dimaknai berbeda-beda membuat perubahan pada pemahaman suatu identitas yang sifatnya fixed atau stasis menjadi dinamis dan merupakan negosiasi antara masa lalu dan masa kini. Tiger Woods juga menjadi representasi dalam masyarakat multikultural Amerika bukan hanya karena identitas yang ada pada dirinya tetapi karena fungsi representasi dari Tiger Woods bagi kepentingan berbagai kelompok tersebut.Identitas individu yang dipahami oleh masyarakat didasari oleh kalegori yang berdasarkan pads ras, etnik, gender dan kelas sehingga muncul berbagai tuntutan pada diri Tiger Woods yang memiliki latar belakang biologis multiras dan multi etnik. Kesadaran akan klasifkasi identitas bagi general multiras dimunculkan dalam fenomena ini. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa klasifikasi identitas yang ada dalam masyarakat dituntut untuk dapat disesuaikan dengan perkembangan yang terjadi sehubungan dengan proses multikulturalisme.Tiger Woods dapat mendominasi olahraga golf yang menjadi supremasi monokulturalisme (rich, middle-age white men). Perubahan yang terjadi dalam tradisi golf menjadikan Tiger Woods dimaknai sebagai simbol perjuangan multikulturalisme. Olahraga golf disini menjadi sarana pergesekan antara monokulturalisme dan multikulturalisme. Representasi Tiger Woods dalam perubahan tradisi golf dimanfaatkan oleh berbagai kelompok untuk kepentingan mereka sehubungan dengan olahraga golf isu sendiri maupun kepentingan diluar urusan golf.Dari berbagai pemaknaan dan penggunaan mitos pahlawan olahraga Tiger Woods ini menunjukkan bahwa masyarakal Amerika memerlukan suatu media yang tidak saja merefleksikan suatu proses multikulturalisme tetapi juga terlibat dan berperan dalam pembentukan proses itu sendiri. Representasi Tiger Woods menjadi signifikan karena memproduksi berbagai simbol dan anti, mengorganisir berbagai pemaknaan dan digunakan sebagai acuan berbagai objek, isu, golongan, peristiwa ataupun aturan-aturan secara nyata dalam masyarakat majemuk Amerika, berdasarkan kode-kode yang sesuai dengan latar belakang konsep pemikiran masing-masing kelompok.

The myth of sports heroes or heroines has played some important role in the American multicultural society since the 1950s. They are not demanded not only to dominate the sports but also to represent some groups in the process of implementing multiculturalism. The issues raised are collective identity recognition and some other issues related to the tradition changes in the related sports institutions. Tiger Woods, a dominant professional golfer has facilitated the issues from different groups that opposites, dominated, and negotiated to each other. He, in this respect a negotiator, is pragmatic by employing the issues for his own or other groups' interests.

Through qualitative approach in cultural studies, analyzing the representation of the sports figure Tiger Wood, I can demonstrate that there is a demand that media must be capable of accommodating various conflicts and supports within the American social groups especially if connected to the multicultural process. The representation of Tiger Woods, which is interpreted differently, has changed the understanding of an identity that used to be fixed or static into the one dynamic and negotiating the past and present. Tiger Woods represents the multicultural American society not because of what he has personally but because of his functioning as the representative of those groups.

Individual identity is understood as categorization with the basis of race, ethnic, gender, and class; therefore, there come demands to Tiger Woods, the one who is biologically of multi races and multi ethnics. The awareness of identity classification of the multiracial generation is raised in this phenomenon. This shows that such social classification is required to adjust to the progress of multicultural process.

Tiger Woods can dominate golf, a monoculture hegemony (rich, middle-aged white men). The changes of this tradition have made Tiger Woods a symbol of the multicultural movement. Golf facilitates the negotiation of monoculture-multicultural conflicts. This representation in changing golf tradition is made good use of by some groups for sports and non-sports purposes.

From the meaning and use of the myth of sports heroes, Tiger Woods shows that American society needs a medium that not only reflects the multicultural process but also involves and takes part in the process itself. The representation becomes significant because it produces symbols and meanings, manages several meaning-makings, and is used as standards of various objects, issues, social groups, events or regulations explicitly in the multicultural America with the basis of codes which conform the background thoughts of each social group."

"Penelitian ini membahas mengenai representasi isu-isu sosial budaya dan spiritual masyarakat imigran muslim Arab di Amerika yang ditemukan dalam serial televisi Amerika Ramy. Tontonan serial televisi karya Ramy Youssef ini menarik untuk dikaji karena mengandung cerminan perjuangan dan dilema masyarakat Arab muslim sebagai minoritas di Amerika Serikat. Hasil penelitian ini adalah jenis representasi intensional paling banyak digunakan dalam serial TV ini karena sifatnya yang dapat menccerminkan intensi pribadi tiap tokoh. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah musim pertama dari serial televisi berbahasa Arab dan Inggris yang berjudul Ramy tahun 2019. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif bersifat deskriptif. Adapun untuk menyampaikan makna-makna simbolis dari serial televisi Ramy penulis menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguraikan bagaimaana isu-isu identitas budaya dan spiritual survival masyarakat imigran Arab muslim direpresentasikan dalam adegan-adegan serial televisi tersebut.

This study discusses the representation of socio-cultural and spiritual issues of Arab Muslim immigrant communities in America which are found in the American television series Ramy. This television series by Ramy Youssef is interesting to study because it reflects the struggle and identity dilemma of the Muslim Arab community as a minority in the United States. The result of this study is that intentional representation type is the most widely used in this TV series because of its nature which can reflect the personal intentions of each character. The data source for this research is the first season of the American television series entitled Ramy in 2019 televised in both Arabic and English. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. As for conveying the symbolic meanings of the television series Ramy, the writer uses Stuart Hall's representation theory. The purpose of this study is to describe the cultural and spiritual identity issues of Arab Muslim immigrant communities represented in the television series' scenes."

"Penelitian ini mengetengahkan rasisme yang terdapat dalam film "Crash" berdasarkan sudut pandang khalayak film, yakni melihat pemaknaan khalayak, khususnya masyarakat kalangan menegah atas atau lebih tepatnya di lihat berdasarkan Reception Studies. Di mana dalam penelitian ini berusaha menunjukkan bahwa khalayak tidak mudah didominasi pesan media massa klmsusnya dalam hal ini adalah pesan dalam film yang dibuat oleh kreator film, karena setiap khalayak memiliki kemampuan untuk memproduksi makna. Dalam hal ini khalayak dianggap sebagai khalayak aktif dan bukan khalayak pasif. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivisme, pendekatan kualitatif, yakni dengan metode penelitian etnografi serta sifat penelitian deskriptif. Dengan menggunakan metode pengumpulan data wawancara mendalam terhadap para informan., diketahui bahwa para informan tidak mengintemalisasi rasisme ke dalam kehidupan sehari - hari mereka, berkaitan dengan pemaknaan., maka pemaknaan inforrnan selaku khalayak film "Crash" terbagi atas pemaknaan dominan, negosiasi dan oposisi. Hasil yang diperoleh berdasarkan wawancara mendalam adalah bahwa para informan memaknai film "Crash" berhasil merepresentasikan rasis yang terjadi di Amerika, namun beberapa adegan film tersebut ada yang dilebih - lebihkan sehingga film "Crash" dimaknai berupaya menyebarluaskan ideologi Amerika yai!u E Pluribus Unum selaigus membentuk image Amerika sebagai savior of all man kind. Penelitian ini diharapkan mampu memperkaya bidang kajian pemaknaan dan media massa, di mana khalayak memiliki kemampuan untuk memaknai pesan dengan menggunakan batas idealisme mereka masing masing dan agar penelitian ini menjadi edukasi bagi para khalayak film khususnya, bahwa f.tlm terkadang bermuatan ideologi yang dikemas begitu apik sehingga membentuk kesadaran palsu khalayaknya.

The purpose of this research is to describe audience reception s about racism which there are in film "Crash", specially in the upper class society or more precisely seeing pursuant to Reception Studies. This research try to indicate that audience do not easy to predominated by message of mass media specially in this case is message in made by film creator's, because every audiences has different ability to produce meaning. In this case the audiences considered to be active audiences and non passive audiences.

In this case, the audience is considered as the active audience and not passive audience. Research using this paradigm constructivism, a qualitative approach, namely with the ethnographic research methods and descriptive nature of the research. By using the method of data-depth interviews of the informants, it is known that the informant does not deepens racism in everyday life - their day, associated with meaning, the informants as the audience perceptive film "Crash" divided up perceptive dominant, negotiation and opposition. Results are based on depth interviews is that the informant perceptive film "Crash" represents racism successfully going on in America, but some scenes the film is tall - so thick film "Crash" mean attempt disseminate American ideology that is E Pluralists Unum at once form the image United States as the savior of all man kind.

Hopefully this research can enrich study area of reception studies and mass media, where the audiences have ability to mean message by using their idealism boundary and this research can be educated all audiences, because sometimes the film can make the audiences have false consciousness, this is because the film is potentially to share the ideology where is tydi with the plot and acting an actress and an actor, and also the visual effect in the film."

"ABSTRAKSerangan Amerika Serikat terhadap Afghanistan memicu berbagai interpretasi mengenai motif negara adidaya tersebut dari beragam kalangan di dunia internasional. Pandangan yang berkembang secara umum terbagi menjadi dua, yakni pandangan yang berupaya menjelaskan murni dengan alasan ekonomi-politik, serta pandangan yang berupaya menjelaskan murni dengan alasan identitas/kultur/peradaban. The US attack on Afghanistan has triggered various interpretations among the international community regarding the motive of the superpower country. In general, there are two mainstream prevailing perspectives, namely the one attempting to explain the phenomenon with pure economic-political motive, and the one that explains through a pure identity/cultural/civilizational approach. This thesis offers an alternative analysis taken from the so-called cultural-geopolitics perspective that tries in eclectic manner to take both elements in their respective proportion without negating each other?s significance in shaping the eventual phenomenon took place."

"Presentasi ini bermaksud untuk menganalisa liputan dari empat media massa terkemuka di Amerika Serikat menganai gerakan PRRI/Permesta dalam periode Februari sampai Juni 1958.
