"Mecca of Revolution examines the history of anticolonial internationalism, or Third Worldism, through the prism of Algerias decolonization and the international relations of independent Algeria. It argues that the Third World movement evolved from a subversive transnational phenomenon in the late-colonial era into a diplomatic collaboration among postcolonial elites to exalt state sovereignty and national authority. Its examination of international affairs places equal, or even greater, emphasis on South-South relations than the more typical North-South perspective. New evidence from the archives of Algeria, Yugoslavia, and numerous other countries demystifies the Third Worldist phenomenon. The book looks past the rhetoric of Bandung, nonalignment, and Afro-Asianism to analyze the nascent geopolitics of postcolonial Africa, the Middle East, and the Southern Hemisphere as a whole. Refuting the notion that the Third World project ended in failure, Mecca of Revolution reveals the development of a Third Worldist normative framework that shapes global affairs in the early twenty-first century, its import felt in matters as diverse as the Arab Spring revolutions, nuclear proliferation, and global trade negotiations. It also argues that the most important effect of the Cold War in the Southern Hemisphere was to push the process of decolonization toward its eventual state-centric outcome. In that regard, the Algerian case shows that the industrialized worlds new methods of political mobilization (such as Wilsonian diplomacy and Marxist-Leninist revolution) were much more influential in the postcolonial world than were the underlying ideologies that informed those methods."

"Eropa telah lama menjadi persimpangan tradisi agama dan budaya yang beragam, tetapi dinamika ini semakin kompleks akibat polarisasi politik dan retorika populis yang meningkat. Kompleksitas persimpangan berbagai budaya tersebut menjadi tema yang diangkat dalam film Facing Mecca (2017). Berkisah mengenai seorang pengungsi muslim di Swiss yang harus memakamkan istrinya, film ini memperlihatkan kendala sosial dan budaya yang harus dihadapi oleh pengungsi yang tidak memiliki status tetap. Penelitian ini menganalisis penggambaran persoalan yang dihadapi oleh pengungsi tersebut serta proses negosiasi penyelesaiannya. Analisis semiotik dilakukan untuk memaknai dialog dan adegan dalam film untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana negosiasi yang digambarkan dalam Facing Mecca memperlihatkan keterbukaan masyarakat Swiss terhadap pendatang. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa film Facing Mecca menampilkan gambaran Swiss sebagai negara yang terbuka terhadap pendatang dan mengedepankan aturan untuk kepentingan mayoritas.

Europe has long been a crossroads of diverse religious and cultural traditions, but these dynamics are increasingly complex due to political polarization and increasing populist rhetoric. The complexity of such cultural intersections is the theme of Facing Mecca (2017). Telling the story of a Muslim refugee in Switzerland who has to bury his wife, the film shows the social and cultural obstacles faced by refugees who do not have permanent status. This study analyzes the depiction of the problems faced by the refugee and the negotiation process to resolve them. Semiotic analysis is conducted to interpret the dialog and scenes in the film to reveal how the negotiations depicted in Facing Mecca show the openness of Swiss society towards migrants. The analysis shows that Facing Mecca portrays Switzerland as a country that is open to migrants and prioritizes rules for the benefit of the majority."

Naskah yang diringkas berkisah tentang kelahiran Nabi Muhammad dan perjalanan hidupnya, namun dalam ringkasan ini penceritaannya menggunakan versi tersendiri yang menympang dari cerita yang dikenal oleh kalangan umat Islam pada umumnya."
