Bednarek, Monika
"This book offers a comprehensive linguistic analysis of contemporary US television series. Adopting an interdisciplinary and multimethodological approach, Monika Bednarek brings together linguistic analysis of the Sydney Corpus of Television Dialogue with analysis of scriptwriting manuals, interviews with Hollywood scriptwriters, and a survey undertaken with university students about their consumption of TV series. In so doing, she presents five new and original empirical studies. The focus on language use in a professional context (the television industry), on scriptwriting pedagogy, and on learning and teaching provides an applied linguistic lens on TV series. This is complemented by perspectives taken from media linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociocultural linguistics/sociolinguistics. Throughout the book, multiple dialogue extracts are presented from a wide variety of well-known fictional television series, including The Big Bang Theory, Grey's Anatomy and Bones. Researchers in applied linguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics and media linguistics will find the book both stimulating and unique in its approach."

The 9/11 tragedy was one of the biggest terrorist tragedies in history. The eruption of this tragedy caused stigmatization of the Islam because the perpetrator of this tragedy was the Al-Qaeda radical terrorism network which was considered synonymous with the Islamic religion. The resulting stigma is a stigma that depicts Islam as a negative religion and in fact, Islam is often directly considered to be the same as the agenda or events of terrorism. This negative narrative of Islam is spread globally. Various efforts have been made by countries, international institutions, and diaspora communities to help eliminate the negative stigma against Islam which ultimately gave birth to Islamophobia. Therefore, this research focuses on the efforts made by the Indonesian Islamic diaspora community to help eliminate the negative stigma towards Islam, especially in the Netherlands. With Indonesian Islamic diaspora community in the Netherlands as the case study, this research seeks to see how efforts are made by the Indonesian Islamic diaspora community in the Netherlands to rationalize the negative narrative towards Islam which has given rise to Islamophobia, through a Middle Eastern model of interfaith dialogue. The results of this research found that several typologies of Middle Eastern interfaith dialogue were also used by the Indonesian Islamic diaspora community in the Netherlands to reduce negative stigma towards Islam, namely (1) harmony model, and (2) dialogue for life model."

Magnusson, Lynne
"Shakespeare and Social Dialogue opens up a new approach to Shakespeare's language and the rhetoric of Elizabethan letters. Moving beyond claims about the language of individual Shakespearean characters, Magnusson develops a rhetoric of social exchange to analyze dialogue, conversation, sonnets, and particularly letters of the period, which are normally read as historical documents. The verbal negotiation of social and power relations such as service or friendship is explored in texts as diverse as Sidney family letters and Shakespeare's sonnets, merchant correspondence and Timon of Athens, Burghley's state letters and Henry IV Part . The book draws on ideas from discourse analysis and linguistic pragmatics, especially "politeness theory", relating these to key ideas in epistolary handbooks of the period, includingthose by Erasmus and Angel Day. Chapters on Henry VIII, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, and Othello demonstrate that Shakespeare's dialogic art is deeply rooted in the everyday language of Elizabethan culture. Magnusson creates a way of reading both literary texts and historical documents which bridges the gap between the methods of new historicism and linguistic criticism."
