ABSTRACT
Banks have been persistently improving their efficiency  by closing branches. In this case study, bank's current method in determining the branch closure prioritization has not reflect the efficiency level of the branches. Therefore, this research is intended to identify the efficiency of the branches to be used as the quantitative parameter in branch closure analysis. This study uses a non-parametric approach of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to examine the efficiency and productivity change of branch offices at one of the large banks in Indonesia. The one-stage DEA was used to generate the relative efficiency score, and the input-oriented Variable Return to Scale (VRS) assumption is adopted in data analysis based on the production approach. The Malmquist Productivity Index was also adopted to measure the total factor productivity change to indicate the improvement or deterioration of the branch performance. The results show that several closed branches in 2019 and 2020 were considered efficient, with increasing productivity. It suggests that the existing branch closure analysis was mostly done qualitatively and with the absence of efficiency measurement. Thus, the efficiency parameter can be adopted as quantitative analysis to enrich bank's branch closure decision-making process as well as to reflect bank's efficiency objective."
