ABSTRACTThis study was to determine albuminuria prevalence and risk associations of albuminuria in people who lived in Klong Luang community. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Klong Luang community, Pathum Thani province, Thailand. The mid-stream urine and blood samples were collected from all participants for albuminuria testing with urine strip and blood urea nitrogen and creatinine analysis, respectively. Binary logistic regression was used for risk association analysis. Among 239 participants enrolled, 32 (13.4%) subjects had albuminuria. Creatinine was a significantly independent risk association for albuminuria (p<0.045, α=0.05). Participants who lived in this community were 13.4% albuminuria prevalence and creatinine was an independent risk association for albuminuria. Thus, Primary Health Care Services should follow up subjects with albuminuria and provide health education program to the Klong Luang community."

ABSTRAKNisin has been extensively used as a safe food preservative: therefore, the occurrence of nisin resistance in various bacteria including nisin exposed Listeria monocytogenes has increased in recent years. This problem could be overcome by using nisin in combination with other antimicrobial agents resulting in synergistic effects. Citric acid is a safe food additive granted GRAS status by the Food and Drug Administration, USA. In the present investigation, the antibacterial activity of nisin and citric acid alone or in combinations against L. monocytogenes 10403S was determined, and their potential as food preservative in food model systems was evaluated. The nisin and citric acid showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at 250 and 4,000 mg/ml, respectively. Checkerboard microdilution method using both compounds showed synergistic effect at concentration of 62.5mg/ml and 1,000 mg/ml, respectively, with the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) value of 0.5. The potent anti listeria effect of nisin in combination with citric acid on the growth of L. monocytogenes in pork ham (food model) was observed during six days of storage at 4oC. This might be exploited to inhibit foodborne bacteria and minimize the nisin resistant problem of L. monocytogenes in the food industry."

ABSTRAKGiardia duodenalis (G. duodenalis) is an intestinal flagellate protozoan, which infects in humans and animals. It can be causing giardiasis. The symptoms are acute or chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss and dehydration. G. duodenalis can be transmitted by eating food or drinking water contaminated with infected stage cysts. Children who live and share facility in an orphanage are the high risk groups for infection. The objective of this paper is to study the prevalence and genotypes of G. duodenalis infection of asymptomatic individual in a child care center. This study was conducted in Mercy Centre orphanage, Klong Toey community. 289 stool samples were collected from children and childcare workers. Stool samples were extracted DNA. Small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU-rDNA) and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) genes were amplified using Nested PCR. PCR products of gdh gene were cut using NlaIV and RsaI restriction enzymes. Genotypes were identified. The results of this study showed the prevalence of giardiasis in an orphanage, Klong Toey community, Thailand was 17.6% (51/289). PCR-RFLP analysis of 19 samples revealed that genotype AII was 63.2% (12/19), genotype BIV was 31.6% (6/19) and genotype BIII was 5.3% (1/19) respectively. Consequently, the study of prevalence and genotypes of G. duodenalis is beneficial for control planning of giardiasis in an orphanage, Klong Toey community."
