"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat representasi ibu tunggal dalam film Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai (Her Love Boils Bathwater) dan refleksi film tersebut terhadap fenomena keluarga dengan ibu tunggal di Jepang. Penulis menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall (1997) sebagai konsep dasar dan teori analisis film melalui karakterisasi tokoh Petrie dan Boggs (2011) serta mise-en-scène Monaco (2000) dalam menganalisis data berupa tangkapan layar adegan yang menampilkan tokoh ibu tunggal dari segi penampilan dan pekerjaan, alasan ibu tunggal dalam bertahan hidup melawan kanker, percakapan ibu tunggal dengan anaknya, dan relasi ibu tunggal dengan mantan suaminya dengan menggunakan metode analisis teks dan visual. Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan tokoh ibu tunggal yang kuat dan berdaya. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh absennya figur seorang ayah sebagai kepala keluarga, sehingga mau tidak mau ibu tunggal harus menjadi sosok yang kuat dan berdaya demi keluarganya. Film Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai dapat dilihat sebagai refleksi terhadap representasi ibu tunggal yang kuat dan berdaya pada fenomena keluarga dengan ibu tunggal di Jepang yang semakin meningkat dalam satu dekade terakhir.

This study aims to look at the representation of single mother in the film titled Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai (Her Love Boils Bathwater) and its reflection on the phenomenon of families with single mother in Japan. The writer uses Stuart Hall’s representation theory (1997) as the basic concept and theory of film analysis through the characterization of Petrie and Boggs (2011) and the mise-en-scène of Monaco (2000). The data that is analyzed using textual and visual analysis methods is in the form of screenshots of scenes featuring single mother in terms of her appearance and job, her reason to survive against cancer, her conversation with her child, and her relationship with her ex-husband. The result shows that the single mother figure is strong and empowered. This is influenced by the absence of a father figure as the patriarch, so that like it or not a single mother must be a strong and empowered figure for the sake of the family. The film Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai can be considered as a reflection of the strong and empowered single mother in the Japan’s growing single mother family phenomenon over the last decade."
