Abstrak :
Hollywood is now starting to present morally gray characters who are neither good nor evil. In this trend, the audience might have difficulty determining the ethical principles of characters as they would commonly perform crimes and justify their crimes as something normal and fair. One of the films that present this is Cruella (2021), which is a remake of Disney classic 101 Dalmanation. This research studies the film Cruella (2021) to understand Estella’s morality, whether she is morally good or evil. The research applies Ayn Rand’s concept of 'virtues of selfishness' to determine Estella’s morality, which believes that humans rationally prioritize their lives as it is their responsibility to do so. It is necessary for their survival responsibility. The research applies textual analysis where I analyzed the dialogue, character's actions, and mise-en-scene elements in the film such as costume and lighting. Istilah 'penjahat hanyalah pahlawan yang hancur' dapat dilihat dari penggambaran ulang dua tokoh penjahat Disney, Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) dan Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians). Perubahan yang dilakukan Disney sangat drastis dan menyebabkan ledakan popularitas untuk kedua karakter. Perubahan ini awalnya dilihat secara positif, karena Maleficent dan Cruella memperoleh pendalaman karakter dan latar belakang. Namun, analisis lebih lanjut mengungkapkan kesalahan konstruksi dalam penilaian itu. Melalui metode analisis tekstual, dapat ditemukan bahwa perubahan yang terjadi dalam penggambaran ulang kedua karakter melanggengkan stereotip gender tradisional dari dikotomi Wanita Jahat dan Gila. ......The term 'a villain is just a broken hero' was highlighted with the recent Disney live-action featuring two of its iconic villains, Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) and Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians). This live-action brings drastic changes, leading to a popularity boom for both characters. These changes were initially viewed in a positive light, as both villains gained more depth in their backstories and characteristics. However, a further analysis presents a misconstruction in that judgment. Through the method of textual analysis, it could be found that the changes happening in the live-action remakes perpetuate the traditional gender stereotype of the Bad and Mad Women dichotomy.
