Modern Family adalah serial TV Amerika yang menggambarkan homoseksualitas dan hubungannya dengan maskulinitas tradisional, yang direpresentasikan oleh salah satu karakter utamanya, Jay Pritchett. Issues related to homosexuality have been widely discussed, for example the increasing problematic representation of homosexuals in the media. Several studies analyze homophobia commonly its relation to masculinity. Modern Family is an American TV series which portrays homosexuality and its relations with traditional masculinity, represented by one of the main characters, Jay Pritchett. Using Kimmel's 1994 concept about the broader range of homophobia, this study analyzes Jay's masculinity, particularly in the context of masculine norms, father son relationships, and their contributions toward his homophobic behaviors through textual analysis. Research findings reveal that Jay's masculine values influence the father son relationship in a problematic way as they contribute to his homophobic behaviors."

"Penulis akan menganalisa karakter Ryu dan Ken dalam seri pertama film Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist untuk memperlihatkan bagaimana Orientalisme dibentuk dan diangkat di dalam seri tersebut. Mengamati kedua karakter tersebut menggunakan konsep Orientalisme dari Said dan Face-threatening Acts (FTAs) dari Brown dan Levinson, penulis akan membahas bagaimana Orientalisme dihadirkan selama sesi pertama film seri tersebut dan bagaimana FTAs berhubungan dengan Orientalisme. Penemuan di dalam penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa ada ambivalensi ketika menentukan manakah dari kedua karakter tersebut yang merupakan representasi dari Barat dan dari Timur.

The author will analyze Ryu and Ken’s characters in the first season of Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist movie series to show how Orientalism is constructed and brought up in the series. In examining the characters, using Said’s Orientalism and Brown and Levinson’s Face-Threatening Acts (FTAs), the author will discuss how Orientalism is presented throughout the first season of the series and how FTAs are related to Orientalism. The finding of this research is that there is ambivalence in terms of determining which of the two characters is the representation of the West and vice versa."

"GYPSY 2017 menceritakan tentang wanita berumur 40 tahun bernama Jean yang membentuk identitas baru untuk mendapatkan kembali dirinya yang telah hilang. Penelitian ini fokus kepada penggambaran alter ego. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis tekstual, konsep alter ego milik Brothers dan Engel, dan konsep struktur kepribadian, libido, dan mekanisme pertahanan ego. GYPSY 2017 is an American television series about a 40-year-old woman named Jean who creates a new identity to regain her old-self. This research focuses on how alter ego is represented. This research uses textual analysis, Brothers rsquo; and Engel rsquo;s concept on alter ego, and Freud rsquo;s personality structure, sexual drive, and defense mechanisms. This research aims to reveal reasons, characteristics, impacts of alter ego, and defense mechanisms. The findings show that alter ego is normal, it impacts personality structure and sexual drive, and the use of defense mechanisms plays a role for the ego to cover the alter ego."

Through the nationalism perspective, this study will use Connor rsquo s ethno nationalism as the analytical framework to analyze and interpret how the Korean TV series The King 2 Hearts 2012 can lead the audience into having the anti American sentiment. By examining the plot, dialogues, and characters in the TV series, the argument of the way the TV series leads the Korean audience rsquo s minds into forming the Anti Americanism sentiment using the memories of Korean civil war, the growing sense of brotherhood that remained in the relation between South and North Korea, and the hatred towards United States will be proven. "Periode1901-1914 di Inggris sering disebut juga sebagai “era Edwardian”. Pada masa ini kesenjangan sosial antara masyarakat ekonomi kelas atas dengan masyarakat ekonomi kelas bawah sangat terlihat dengan jelas. Masyarakat kelas atas dapat menginvestasikan harta yang dimiliki untuk membeli tanah yang luas dan membangun rumah mewah, sementara masyarakat kelas bawah harus bekerja keras untuk bertahan hidup. Demi bertahan hidup, tercatat lebih dari satu juta masyarakat Inggris pada era Edwardian yang memilih untuk bekerja sebagai pembantu rumah tangga di rumah kaum kelas menengah sampai rumah kaum kelas atas. Untuk dapat memahami kelas-kelas sosial masyarakat Inggris pada era Edwardian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti kehidupan orang-orang yang tinggal dalam satu rumah mewah bangsawan ada pada serial TV Inggris, Downton Abbey (2010), dapat merepresentasikan kelaskelas sosial yang ada pada sosial hirerarki Inggris pada tahun 1901-1914 di Inggris. Dengan menggunakan teori representasi oleh Hall (1997) dan juga konsep sinematografi dan mise-en-scene oleh Broadwell dan Thompson (2013), penelitian ini menemukan bahwa kelas-kelas sosial Inggris dapat direpresentasikan oleh keluarga dan pembantu rumah tangga yang tinggal pada rumah mewah bangsawan di era Edwardian. Kemudian, perbedaann antara arsitektur dan interior pada rumah mewah bangsawan yanv memisahkan ruang “atas” dan ruang “bawah” mengilustrasikan kesenjangan yang kuat antara kelas-kelas sosial pada era Edwardian. Terakhir, artikel ini menemukan bahwa rumah mewah bangsawan pada era Edwardian bukan hanya tempat bagi keluarga kelas atas untuk hidup, tetapi juga berfungsi sebagai simbol kekayaan dan kekuatan politik sang pemilik rumah. The years between 1901 and 1914 in Britain, or often called the “Edwardian era,” comprise the period which is characterized by the tremendous gap between the rich and poor. The upper-class were able to invest their money on land and build a luxurious country house (s) while the lower-class struggled just to stay alive. In order to survive, more than one million people in Edwardian era England chose to work as domestic servants in the upper-middle-class’ up to the upper-class’ homes. To discern the impact of social hierarchy towards Edwardian society, this research aims to examine the lives of people from different social classes within English country houses, and how the house itself can symbolize social status in the hierarchy. This analysis will focus on the way people from different levels of the social ladder manage to live within an Edwardian country house named “Downton,” depicted in the first season of British TV series, Downton Abbey (2010). Based on Hall’s (1997) theory of representation, and also Broadwell and Thompson’s (2013) concept of cinematography and mise-en-scene, this research has found that the condition of the English social classes can be observed through the way people live in an Edwardian country house. Moreover, the differences between architecture and interior design of country house’s “upstairs” and “downstairs” area illustrate the stark social gap between social classes in the Edwardian era. Lastly, this article has found that the English country house in the Edwardian era is not merely a place for rich people to live in, but also a symbol of the upper-social status and political power. Thus, the social condition in the 1901 to 1914 England can be observed through the way people live within a country house that depicted in the TV series, Downton Abbey."

"Keberadaan karakter non-heteronormatif di serial televisi Amerika semakin terlihat lebih banyak. Publik kini lebih familiar dengan karakter LGBT. Namun, terdapat sebuah stereotipe yakni semua karakter non-heteronormatif diklasifikasikan sebagai LGBT. Riverdale (2017- 2019) terlepas dari stereotipe ini dengan menggambarkan sexual fluidity. Serial televisi Riverdale diadaptasi dari buku komik tahun 1970 dengan alur cerita mengenai kehidupan remaja di Riverdale. Riset sebelumnya mengenai sexual fluidity fokus pada analisis data survei, pengamatan, dan sejarah. Tujuan dari riset ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi bagaimana seksualitas yang berubah-ubah direpresentasikan di serial televisi Amerika, Riverdale. Dengan menggunakan teori Diamond mengenai sexual fluidity (2009), riset ini menemukan bahwa meskipun terdapat beberapa karakter dengan karakteristik sexual fluidity, mereka masih terpengaruh norma heteronormatif.

Non-heteronormative characters have become more visible in American TV series. The public are more familiar with LGBT characters now. However, there is a common stereotype that all non-heteronormative characters are classified as LGBT. Riverdale (2017-2019) breaks away from this stereotype by portraying sexually fluid characters. Riverdale TV series is adapted from 1970s comic book with a plot revolving around teenagers life on Riverdale. Previous sexual fluidity research focus on data analysis of survey, observation, and history. The aim of this research is to investigate how sexual fluidity is represented on Riverdale TV series. Using Diamond`s (2009) theory of sexual fluidity, this research found that although there are some sexually fluid characters, they still follow heternormative norms to some extent."

"Dengan perkembanggan film dan TV series LGBT yang telah di buat, salah satu tema klise yang kerap di gunakan adalah tema klise Bury Your Gays (BYG) yang muncul di salah satu TV series terkenal yaitu Killing Eve yang di rilis tahun 2018. Akan tetapi, TV series tersebut memiliki kontroversi bukan hanya karena penggunaan tema klise negatif, namun juga dengan adanya penggunaan LGBT sebagai umpan taktik untuk menarik penonton yang terlihat jelas bagaimana TV series tersebut menyimpang dari bukunya dengan judul yang sama yang di tulis oleh Luke Jennings. Menggunakan analisis teks dengan teori tema klise Bury Your Gays milik Hulan (2017) dengan membandingkan TV series dengan buku, penelitian ini menganalisa bahwa TV series bertanggung jawab dalam merubah plot, dan karakterisasi tokoh LGBT yang menyebabkan kurangnya representasi LGBT yang sudah terbatas.

With the rising number of LGBTQ films and TV series made, one common trope that is often used by films and TV series is the Bury Your Gays (BYG) trope which appeared in one of the famous lesbian TV series that was released in 2018, Killing Eve. However, the show is controversial not only because of its negative use of the Bury Your Gays trope but also as a part of a queerbaiting tactic seen from how the TV series deviated from the source which is the book with the same title written by Luke Jennings and merely used it to gain audience engagement. Using textual analysis utilizing Hulan's (2017) Bury Your Gays trope theories and comparing the TV series and the book, the paper finds that the TV series is responsible for changing plots and characterization of the LGBT characters which undermines the already limited LGBT representation in the TV series."

"ABSTRAKSebagai salah satu episode paling populer dari serial televisi fiksi ilmiah asal Inggris, San Junipero dipandang sebagai salah satu episode serial Black Mirror yang menarik untuk dianalisis, terlebih dari segi sains dan teknologi, karena adanya penggunaan teknologi virtual canggih didalamnya. Meskipun demikian, pembahasan tentang isu-isu LGBT dalam serial televisi fiksi seperti ilmiah Black Mirror masih jarang ditemukan. Dengan menggunakan metode analisis mise-en-scènes untuk menelaah aspek-aspek sinematografis seperti latar, warna, kostum, teknik kamera, serta akting, sekaligus metode analisis literatur untuk menelaah keberadaan serta karakteristik tokoh-tokoh LGBT di dalamnya, tulisan ini mencoba menelaah aspek-aspek heteronormatif yang masih bertahan di balik imej celebration of queerness yang diakui oleh para penggemar episode ini. Dari hasil analisis, nilai-nilai heteronormativitas masih tercermin di dalam episode ini karena, faktanya, kedua karakter LGBT di dalamnya masih ditampilkan secara stereotipikal. Eksistensi karakter-karakter LGBT di dalam episode ini juga ternyata sesuai dengan kritik Rich (1980) tentang latar belakang eksistensi lesbian yang berkaitan dengan heteronormativitas.

ABSTRACTAs one of the episodes from the famous sci-fi British TV series, San Junipero has become one of the most interesting episodes from Black Mirror series to be analyzed, specifically from the perspective of science and technology, for its mind-blowing VR-based invention. Nevertheless, the aspect of gender and LGBT issues has not been commonly explored in sci-fi literature like Black Mirror. Using mise-en-scène as an approach to analyze some of the cinematographic elements, (setting, color, costume, camera work and performance) as well as analyzing the queer characters, this article tries to identify the heteronormative elements that still persist under the image of a celebration of queerness the episode has received from the fans. Apparently, heteronormativity is still depicted in the episode for the fact that the queer characters are still portrayed rather stereotypically according to several studies about the representation of queer characters in the media discussed by Seifs (2013). As a heterotopia, according to Foucaults (1986), the establishment of the queer characters in San Junipero also fit Richs (1980) critique towards the lesbian existence in relation to compulsory heteronormativity that queer romance exists through melancholy. Nevertheless, not all aspects in the episode scream pure heteronormativity. Although at first glance it seems stereotypical, the queer characters appearance seem to help establishing a non-stereotypical identity in female-female relationship."
