Flemming, Barbara
"In Essays on Turkish Literature and History Barbara Flemming makes available essays partly previously published in German. They offer insights gained through decades of scholarship. Although the Ottoman period is central, a wide range is covered, including an early Turkish principality, Mamluk and Ottoman Egypt, and contemporary southeastern Turkey. The essays look into historical and political factors involved in the preoccupation with the worlds ending, into Muslim-Christian dialogue, the sultans prayer before battle, and the bilingualism of poets. Of particular interest are the sections on female participation in mysticism, on an anti-Sufi movement in Cairo, on the Ottoman capitals appeal to collectors and emigrants (Diez, Sussheim, Bohlau), and on the far-reaching effects of alphabet change."

ABSTRACT
The word Heimat has a wide range of meanings, but the most common association with this word is the geographical space associated with the past and nostalgia. The question of Heimat is particularly related to mobility and displacement. In German Cinema the notion of Heimat intensively emerged post-World War II and re-emerged as the Ostalgie in the course of German Reunification. The reunification period also witnessed the revival of German cinema with the contributions of German film directors of Turkish descent, who were succesfully gain international recognition. Not only important for German cinema, the works of German-Turkish directors are also essential to be analyzed in relation to the meaning of Heimat. By conducting a textual analysis of three German films by Turkish directors, namely Gegen die Wand, Auf der anderen Seite and Almanya - Willkommen in Deutschland, this paper aims to examine the meaning of Heimat for Turkish immigrants in Germany and how they contribute to the German cinema. The analysis shows that the concept of Heimat in the German films is particularly attached to the historical context and is limited to the sphere of space referring to an ideal state. As for immigrants, this concept is envisaged to be more flexible and diverse."

"After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923, and the new regime aimed to construct a national identity through a series of reforms. Among them, one statesponsored project was culturally significant: the Turkish Language Reform. Two institutions, the Turkish Historical Society and the Turkish Linguistic Society, helped to legitimize the language reform and construct a new cultural identity for the citizens of the new nationstate. The Turkish Language Reform, arguably the most radical of all reforms, has been a successful component of the republican social engineering project. This paper examines the centrality of the language issue in the nationbuilding effort and the role of the two abovementioned institutions in the process. The Turkish Language Reform remains one of the most effective state interventions on language. The present paper explores the reasons behind the reforms success and the importance of language as a marker of national identity."

"Kemal Ataturk's Republic of Turkey was set up in 1923 as a secular state, sweeping political, social, and religious reforms followed. This study sets out the struggle between religion and secularism, and shows how Ataturk laboured for an idealised 'Turkish Islam' stripped of superstition and linked to modern science and positivist philosophy."
