Outside dump of Air Lava Coliery is large (±650 ha), in order to sustainable land use, the location should be used. Using the location as farm or plantation is relatively difficult due to the land fertility. Potential usage is as a settlement, this is supported by infrastructure availability (road, bridge, economic center, medical facilities, and other). To support the usage of outside dump as settlement, geotechnical analysis should be performed in relation with the physical and mechanical characteristics of soil as well as the slope stability. Sampling and laboratory analysis provide that there is no relationship trends between cohesion and depth as well as the dumping time. This because of the material being dumped is heterogen and compacting procedure applied which may be not same from one area to another. Hence, for use as settlement, detail geotechnics study of the location should be conducted. In location with low cohesion value, simple building may be build, whereas in location with high cohesion value permanent or multi-floor building can be build.

Abstrak :
This single-volume thoroughly summarizes advances in the past several decades and emerging challenges in fundamental research in geotechnical engineering. These fundamental research frontiers are critically reviewed and described in details in lights of four grand challenges our society faces: climate adaptation, urban sustainability, energy and material resources, and global water resources. The specific areas critically reviewed, carefully examined, and envisioned are: sensing and measurement, soil properties and their physics roots, multiscale and multiphysics processes in soil, geochemical processes for resilient and sustainable geosystems, biological processes in geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, coupled flow processes in soil, thermal processes in geotechnical engineering, and rock mechanics in the 21st century.
