"The essays in this volume are not intended to outline the initial stages of spread of Buddhist doctrines to various parts of Asia. Nor are they meant to be introductory narratives of Buddhism in different regions of Asia. Rather the essays deal with complex issues related to Buddhism, in the process by which the doctrines, in their varied forms and manifestations. Many of the essays are detailed exposition of these evolving phases of Buddhist history in Asia, from the early common era to the twentieth century. "

"This volume addresses an important problem in social scientific research on global religions and spirituality: How to evaluate the role of diverse religious and spiritual (R/S) beliefs and practices within the rapid evolution of spiritual globalization and diversification trends. The book examines this question by bringing together a panel of international scholars including psychologists, sociologists, and researchers in religious studies, public health, medicine, and social work. The content includes chapters describing innovative concepts of post-Christian spirituality, Eastern forms of meditation, afterlife beliefs associated with the three dominant cultural legacies, various non-religious worldviews, spiritual Jihad, and secular and religious reverence. The book also covers such important themes as spiritual well-being, faith, struggle, meaning making, modeling, and support, as well as mysticism and using prayer to cope with existential crises. This book advances theunderstanding of the role of R/S across different faiths and cultural systems, including both Western and non-Western ones, and enriches the mainstream of psychological sciences and practices. It appeals to students, educators, researchers, and clinicians in multiple related fields and disciplines."

This study aims to uncover the relationship between religiosity and motivation to consume Islamic horror films. In Indonesia, religious horror has become a significantly growing subgenre over the past few years, although the representation of religious symbols in horror films can be traced back to the New Order era. Previous studies have examined the relationship between religion and horror–how the film industry subverts religious symbols, capitalizes on religiously motivated fears, and how horror films serve as an unconventional medium for religious propaganda. What went unnoticed from these studies is that society is rarely treated as a contributing actor in this trend, as supply also follows demand. Using a specific mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, a total of 276 respondents and three in-depth interviews were conducted. Bivariate and multivariate analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between religiosity and motivation to consume Islamic horror movies, and that religiosity most influences motivation among Gen Z compared to Gen X and Millennials. These findings reflect the rise of desecularization manifested by the commodification of religion in the media, including the horror genre. Moreover, the differences in results by generational cohorts are related with differences in perceptions of religion in social media and religious education in adolescence. "

"Just like the Gutenberg revolution in the fifteenth century, which led to the emergence of non-conventional religious authority in the Christian world, the current information technology revolution, particularly through mediums such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter, has triggered the re-construction and decentralization of religious authority in Islam. New santri (pious individuals) and preachers emerged from the non-conventional religious educational system. They not only challenged the traditional authorities, but also redefine and re-conceptualize old religious terminologies, such as hijra and wasatiyya. This book explores the dynamics of religious authority in Indonesia with special attention to the challenges from the "new santri". It is a rich and important book on religion. I recommend students of religion in Indonesia and other countries to read it.Ahmad Syafi'i Maarif, Professor Emeritus of History at Yogyakarta State UniversityAn important and timely volume that addresses the changing nature of Islamic leadership in the world's most popular Muslim country. This book debunks many (mis)perceptions that Indonesia Islam is monolithic. It also redefines dominant characterization of Islam by Orientalist scholars, such as santri and abangan Muslims.Haedar NashirChairman of MuhammadiyahThis edited volume evaluates the new development of Islamic scholarship and authority in Indonesia. Things have changed significantly in recent times that make many observers and researchers wondering: has Indonesia moved from traditional authorities, mainstream Islamic organizations, and the established scholarship to the new actors, movements and platforms? Has the change occurs owing to the democratization and political reforms that took place in the last twenty years or are there other factors we need to take into account? The contributors in this book provide possible answers from many different areas and perspectives. It's a must-read!Nadirsyah HosenMonash University, Australia"
