Seasonal influenzed on plankton of the waters around Riau islands. The observation was conducted during April - May 2002. This study was done in relation with observation on environment quality of the waters around Riau Islands. The parameter observed were focus on the plankton communities for tweentyfives points of stations which were grouped into two zone based on the distance of the each station. Plankton abundance varied with location groups from 50- 90 % respectively. Community structure was dominated by the group of diatoms such as Chaetoceros, Dytilum, Nitzschia, Thalassionema, Thalassiothrix and the genus Ceratium (the group of Dinoflagellata). Community structure of zooplankton was dominated by the group of Copepods (45 - 90 %) and Polychaeta, Chaetognata, Bivalvia, Gastropods and Oikopleura (more than 90 %). The results describe the relationship between the water environmental condition and variation of plankton condition.

This article discusses the cultural history sketch of Orang Suku Laut (the Sea Tribe) and its implications for social relations patterns with the Malays in Riau Islands, Indonesia. Problems arise now in nomadic ethnic tribe when they interacting with the Malays. Many Malays people perceive Orang Suku Laut as a backward or primitive people. This point of view emerged from a long history of Orang Suku Laut in Riau Islands, and at present, the discourse is supported by the government which resettled them from the sea to the land as part of the modernization of disadvantaged areas in the New Order era. This government label to them was later influenced the Malays perception. Moreover, negative assumption also appears along with the cultural identity differences between both of the tribes, of which the Malays condense with Islamic tradition, while Orang Suku Laut doesn?t. At this situation, thus the identity of Orang Suku Laut is staked within socio-cultural dispute or contestation (the attraction process) among themselves in practicing their everyday lives.

ABSTRACT Crime phenomenon occurs not only on land, but air and sea area can also be a subject to crime space. Transnational regions are susceptible to crimes, not limited to the local region of a country. In this thesis, the author attepts to describe the criminal phenomenon on sea sector, such as smuggling through sea terrains that happened in Riau Islands territorial waters that still exist to this day. Smuggling is common and interminable due to several factors, such as geographical conditions, lack of supervision, the involvement of the local citizens, and the capability of the perpetrators towards the act. These factors are built based on literature studies and previous researches regarding smuggling activities through the oceanic track. This causes the status of smuggling through the sea is still ceaseless and ongoing to this date in Riau Islands.

Abstrak :
Culture can only be revitalized when a cultural tradition is considered of significant importance by its owning community. How important it is for the identity of that community or to what extent it symbolizes that community can only be established after in-depth study. It is crucial that revitalization activities involve the community. If not, efforts would be pointless. Mak Yong is one of the Malay performing art traditions that has been revitalized over the last five years. It is an art form that originates in southern Thailand and was brought to Bintan in the Riau Islands (Kepulauan Riau, Kepri) via Singapore. It combines dialogue, dance, singing, music, and stories and may still be found in the Riau Islands in Indonesia. It is interesting to show how Mak Yong has represented and expressed Malay dynamics by means of revitalizations efforts.

ABSTRAK
The essay reflects on the work of Adrian Lapian (1929 until 2011), an Indonesian scholar of archipelagic/maritime Southeast Asia and its sea people sea pirates sea kings. The essay suggests that Lapians writing mirrors navigation at sea, and the constant reorientation and ever changing, multiple points of view that are part of it. This is contrasted to Foucaults panopticism and academic desire for discipline. Taking cue from Lapians writing and from the present authors experience of seafaring, the essay envisions Southeast Asian studies as a fluid, precarious, disorienting, even nauseating multiplicity of experiences, dialogues, and moving, unstable, and uncertain points of view, a style of learning that is less (neo)colonial, more humble, and closer to experiences in the region, than super scholarship that imposes universalizing, panoptic standards, theories and methods (typically self styled as new) that reduce the particular into a specimen of the general, a cell in the Panopticon. The essay concludes with reflections on certain learning initiatives/traditions at the National University of Singapore, including seafaring voyages experiences, encounters, and conversations that make students and scholars alike to move and see differently, to be touched, blown away, rocked, swayed, disoriented, swallowed, transformed, and feel anew their places, roots, bonds, distances, fears, blindness, powerlessness.
