[ABSTRAK
Disertasi ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan dinamika yang berlangsung antara agen dan struktur dalam masyarakat nelayan di Desa Teluk, Labuan-Banten. Dengan menggunakan teori strukturasi Anthony Giddens dan dilengkapi dengan konsep pembangunan sosial berdasarkan struktur, kultur, dan proses, dalam melihat dinamika relasi yang ada antara agen dan stuktur dalam masyarakat nelayan. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan strategi grounded research. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di dalam masyarakat nelayan telah terjadi perubahan dalam struktur dari dominasi kelembagaan formal menjadi dominasi kelembagaan non-formal. Kemiskinan yang ada pada struktur yang lama ternyata direproduksi oleh struktur yang baru. Penelitian ini juga menemukan kelemahan dari strukturasi Giddens yang menganggap bahwa struktur dalam versi dualitas-nya, baik sebagai hasil dan sekaligus sarana (medium) praktik sosial ternyata tidak selalu bersifat enabling atau memberdayakan. Pembangunan kelautan dan perikanan, khususnya menyangkut tentang bagaimana mengatasi kemiskinan masyarakat nelayan harus melihat pentingnya dinamika relasi yang terjadi antara agen dan struktur agar perubahan yang dilakukan oleh negara, dalam hal ini Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, tidak justru melahirkan kemiskinan baru.

This dissertation aims to describe the dynamics that take place between the agent and the structure of the fishing community in Teluk Village, Labuan, Banten. By using structuration theory of Anthony Giddens and equipped with the concept of social development based on the structure, culture, and processes, in view of the dynamics of relationships that exist between agents and structures in the fishing communities. The approach used in this study is a qualitative grounded research strategy. The results of this study indicate that in the fishing community has been a change in the structure of the formal institutional domination domination of non-formal institutions. Poverty that exist on the old structures turned out to be reproduced by the new structure. The study also found weaknesses of Giddens structuration which assume that the structure in its duality version, either as a result and at the same time means (medium) social practices were not always be enabling or empowering. Development of marine and fisheries, particularly with regard to how to overcome poverty of fishing communities must see the importance of the dynamics of relationships that occur between agents and structures so that the changes made by the state, in this case the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, did not actually give birth to new poverty. Tesis ini membahas tentang pembentukan identitas dan ideologi anak muda melalui representasi laptop dalam iklan. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Semiotika Barthes dengan didukung oleh model analisis dari Rose. Iklan adalah salah satu media yang membentuk identitas melalui representasi-representasinya. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa laptop membentuk identitas anak muda yang berkaitan dengan gaya hidup moderen anak muda perkotaan masa kini. Selain itu, penggunaan laptop dalam iklan menunjukkan bahwa secara ideologis, laptop merupakan representasi dari teknologi yang menjadi ciri masyarakat moderen yang dinamis. ...... This thesis analyzes the identity and the ideology which are represented by laptop as the representation of technology in ads. This research is a qualitative research using three types of ads, as the data. The theories which are used to analyze the data are the semiotic theory by Roland Barthes and the visual analysis model by Gillian Rose. The result of this research shows that the use of laptop in ads represent certain identities of young people, especially the urban young people. Beside that, the use of laptop in ads, ideologically, shows that technology becomes the character of the modern people nowadays.

Disertasi ini mengkaji bagaimana orang Umalulu, mengkonstruksi identitas budaya mereka berkaitan dengan keagamaannya dalam menghadapi proses pendiskriminasian di sekeliling mereka. Pemeluk agama Marapu menjadi terdiskriminasi bukan karena identitas budaya yang melekat padanya, akan tetapi akibat pencitraan negatif terhadapnya. Kategori diskriminatif dengan semua atribut dan peran yang melekat padanya bukanlah konstruk alamiah, melainkan suatu produk sejarah dan produk representasi. Kajian bertujuan mengungkapkan aspek-aspek yang berkaitan dengan representasi budaya dan masyarakat Umalulu, untuk memperoleh pemahaman tentang bagaimana orang Umalulu telah direpresentasikan oleh orang-orang lain, dan bagaimana mereka telah menampilkan diri mereka sendiri kepada dunia luar. Identitas budaya adalah sesuatu yang dikonstruksi, untuk mengungkapkannya dalam penelitian ini saya merujuk pada konsep identitas (identity) dari Erik H. Erikson, yang melihat identitas sebagai suatu proses restrukturasi segala identifikasi dan gambaran diri terdahulu, di mana seluruh identitas fragmenter yang dahulu diolah dalam perspektif suatu masa depan yang diantisipasi. Penelitian kualitatif yang dilakukan, meliputi penelitian kepustakaan dan lapangan. Pengumpulan data melalui wawancara dan pengamatan terlibat dengan satuan analisisnya adalah penduduk kecamatan Umalulu, kabupaten Sumba Timur, propinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur. Temuan penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa identitas budaya orang Umalulu merupakan hasil dari interaksi antara kekuatan-kekuatan dari ?luar? dengan praktek kehidupan yang dilandasi tatanan hidup mereka. Marapu adalah agama yang merupakan identitas budaya orang Umalulu, yang menjadi pedoman dasar atau nilai-nilai yang menata kehidupan mereka. Bagi orang Umalulu yang bukan pemeluk agama Marapu, ke-Marapu-an dianggap sebagai adat istiadat dari nenek moyang saja, dan bukan sebagai suatu keyakinan yang mereka peluk. Bagi orang Umalulu, beralih agama merupakan suatu kompromi, yaitu merupakan salah satu bentuk ?strategi perlindungan budaya? yang dapat meredam ketakutan dan agresi yang timbul di antara individu dan masyarakat. Budaya yang bersifat kompromistis ini diaktifkan melalui lembaga adat yang tetap selalu mengedepankan musyawarah dan memegang teguh konsep kebersamaan dan solidaritas.
ABSTRACT
This dissertation examines how the people of Umalulu construct their cultural identity associated with their religiosity to face discrimination process around them. Marapu religion to be discriminated not because of cultural identity attached to it, but due to their negative image. Discriminated category with all the attributes and roles attached to it is not a natural construct, but a product of history and product of representation. The study aims to reveal the aspects relating to the representation of Umalulu?s culture and society, to gain an understanding of how people of Umalulu been represented by others, and how they have represented themselves to the outside world. The point of view that considers cultural identity as something that is constructed, then to express it I refer to the Erik H. Erikson?s concept of identity, who see the identity as a process of restructuring all previous self-identification and description, where all the fragmented identity of the first processed with a view of the future anticipated. Conducted qualitative research, including literature and field research. Data collection through interviews and participant observation with the unit of analysis is the population of Umalulu district, East Sumba regency, Eastern Nusa Tenggara province. The research findings show that cultural identities of the Umalulu?s people are the result of the interaction between the forces of the "outside" the practice of life based on the order of their lives. Marapu is a religion which is the cultural identity of the person Umalulu, which became the basis of guidelines or values that organize their lives. Even for people who are not follow the Marapu religion, the Marapu's for those limited to the customs of ancestors only, and not as a faith they profess. For people of Umalulu, switching religion is a compromise, which is one form of "cultural protection strategy", which can reduce fear and aggression that arise between the individuals and society. The nature of this compromise culture is enabled through the traditional institutions that remain always puts deliberation and uphold the concept of togetherness and solidarity.

Istilah "gothic" telah ada sejak abad ke-4 setelah Masehi sebagai nama sebuah suku barbar di daerah Eropa Timur. Arti dari kata ?gothic? kemudian berkembang menjadi gaya arsitektur, aliran sastra, fashion dan genre musik seiring dengan perkembangan zaman. Kesemua aspek tersebut membentuk gothic sebagai budaya yang anti-mainstream. Perkembangan arti kata ?gothic? ini kemudian menimbulkan banyak representasi yang berbeda-beda dari setiap individu yang mengikuti budaya tersebut. Skripsi ini membahas representasi budaya gothic yang ditampilkan oleh grup musik gothic asal Jerman, Blutengel, melalui album mereka yang berjudul Monument. ......The term "Gothic" has been around since 4th century A.D as the name of a tribe of the barbarian, that lived in Eastern Europe. The meaning of the word "gothic" was later developed into a style of architecture, literature genre, fashion and music genre along with the development of the times. All these aspects made gothic as an anti-mainstream culture. The development of the meaning of the word "gothic" later made many different representations from every individual that follows the culture. This thesis discusses about the representation of Gothic culture that displayed by a gothic music group from Germany, Blutengel, through their album entitled "Monument".

Realityshow Primitive Runaway (PR) episode Lia Wa Ode dan Rio Dewanto mengunjungi suku Sambori di Bima, Nusa Tenggara Barat, merepresentasikan pertemuan dua budaya yang berbeda, modern (Barat) dan tradisional (Timur). Pertemuan dua budaya tersebut menghasilkan oposisi biner maju dan terbelakang, percaya gaib dan berfikir rasional, bersih dan kotor, yang merupakan cara pandang Orientalisme Edward Said yakni cara Barat memosisikan Timur.

Penelitian ini membahas bagaimana suku Sambori direpresentasikan dalam Primitive Runaway serta bagaimana sudut pandang orang kota terhadap masyarakat yang tinggal di belahan Indonesia Timur itu. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Semiotik Roland Barthes untuk membongkar mitos (mythologies) serta ideologi hegemoni yang terkandung di program reality show ini.

Fokus analisis adalah menganalisis unsur naratif dan sinematografis film, serta memaknai simbol yang terdapat pada film “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones' untuk menggali bentuk representasi dalam film tersebut. Analisis ini menggunakan teori semiotik dan representasi dengan pendekatan objektif dan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari analisis ini adalah film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones merepresentasikan kota New York sebagai kota yang modern namun tetap spiritual, kota yang sarat akan identitas dan kota yang rindu akan kehangatan. ...... This thesis aims to describe the city of New York representations contained in "The Mortal Instruments : City of Bones" movie. The focus of the analysis is to analyze the elements of narrative and cinematographic, as well as the meaning of the symbols contained in "The Mortal Instruments : City of Bones" movie to explore the forms of representation inside. This analysis uses semiotic and representation theory with the objective approach and qualitative descriptive method. The results of this analysis is 'The Mortal Instruments : City of Bones' movie represents the city of New York as a modern city but still spiritual, loaded by identity and miss the warmth.

Skripsi ini membahas adanya representasi identitas budaya tertentu yang disampaikan melalui humor dalam karikatur karya Loriot yang terangkum di buku Männer und Frauen passen einfach nicht zusammen. Pembahasan ini dilakukan secara deskriptif dan bersifat argumentatif, dengan menggunakan metode studi pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam kumpulan karya Loriot ini terdapat representasi identitas budaya berdasarkan gender dan kelas sosial, serta kritik terhadap stereotip yang menyertai kedua identitas budaya tersebut. Kritik yang dimaksud disampaikan melalui ironi dan satir yang menimbulkan humor sehingga menarik perhatian pembacanya, sekaligus mengajak pembacanya untuk merefleksikan kembali penerapan stereotip-stereotip tersebut di masyarakat.
The focus of this study is on the representation of cultural identity in Loriot?s work: Männer und Frauen passen einfach nicht zusammen, which presented in the form of caricatures. The purpose of this study is to prove that Loriot used humor to represent the cultural identities based on gender and social class, and eventually criticize it. His critic served in the form of irony and satire, which are funny and in the same time make the readers of his work conscious about the stereotypes and reconsider the application of stereotypes in community. This study will use the framework of analyze.

Keberadaan Museum Taman Prasasti sebagai sebuah ruang publik yang merepresentasikan suatu budaya dengan cara mengkoleksi berbagai objek untuk disajikan kepada publik. Pemilihan prasasti, khususnya batu nisan, sebagai koleksi museum merupakan representasi Pemakaman Kebon Jahe Kober pada abad 18 di Batavia. Sejak ditutup sebagai pemakaman pada tahun 1975, pemerintah mulai mengadakan pengangkatan seluruh jenazah yang ada untuk dimakamkan kembali di Pemakaman Tanah Kusir, Menteng Pulo dan pemakaman lainnya yang ada di Jakarta. Langkah selanjutnya adalah mengadakan pemugaran serta penataan ulang pada batu nisan. Perubahan identitas Museum Taman Prasasti dari makam menjadi museum merupakan pertanyaan besar, bagaimana konstruksi identitas tempat dapat terjadi, apa saja yang membentuk identitas tersebut serta apa yang dapat direpresentasikan berdasarkan faktor - faktor pembentuk identitas tersebut. Dalam penulisan ini, penulis mencoba melakukan perbandingan mengenai identitas Kebon Jahe Kober namun pada zaman yang berbeda, yaitu pada masa kolonial Belanda di Batavia dan masa modern di Jakarta dengan studi literatur serta pengamatan langsung. Setelah membandingkan faktor - faktor pembentuk identitas pada lokasi yang sama berdasarkan waktu yang berbeda, maka penulis mencoba untuk menganalisa representasi yang terdapat dari kedua identitas tempat tersebut. ......The presence of Museum Taman Prasasti as a public space represents culture by collecting various objects to be presented to the public. Inscription, especially on tombstone, as museum collections represents Pemakaman Kebon Jahe Kober in the eighteenth century in Batavia. Since the closure as a cemetery in 1975, the Government of Jakarta started to had the bodies removed to some of the cemeteries for instance to Pemakaman Tanah Kusir, Menteng Pulo and other cemeteries in Jakarta. After removing the bodies, the government starts to undertake the restoration and re-settlement on tombstones. The changes of Museum Taman Prasasti's identity from a cemetery to a museum happen to be a big question, how the construction of identity of place could occur, and examples of factors that create the identity of place and what to represents from those factors. In this thesis, I try to make a comparison on the identity of Pemakaman Kebon Jahe Kober but at different times, at colonial times in Batavia and modern times in Jakarta with the study of literature as well as direct observation. And after that, I'll try to analyse the representation from those two identities.

Identitas budaya di setiap daerah memiliki ciri-ciri atau nilai-nilai yang membedakannya dengan daerah lain. Salah satunya adalah kelompok Islam Wetu Telu, yaitu penganut Islam di Lombok yang masih percaya terhadap animistik leluhur dan benda-benda antropomorfis, sehingga membentuk identitas kelompok budaya. Identitas kelompok Islam Wetu Telu direpresentasikan ke dalam budaya material, dalam hal ini adalah masjid. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menjelaskan bagaimana identitas kelompok Islam Wetu Telu direpresentasikan ke dalam masjid-masjid kuno yang berada di Lombok. Penelitian ini menggunakan empat masjid kuno yang merupakan peninggalan dari Islam Wetu Telu. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan arkeologi melalui tiga tahapan penelitian, yaitu pengumpulan data, pengolahan data, dan penafsiran data. Hasil dari penelitian ini bahwa terdapat ornamen-ornamen dan keletakan dari masjid-masjid kuno di Lombok yang merepresentasikan identitas Islam Wetu Telu. Ornamen-ornamen tersebut antara lain adalah motif hewan dengan bentuk naga, rusa, ayam, ikan, burung dan pohon kelapa yang merepresentasikan makna dari wetu telu. Selain itu keletakan masjid yang berada di tempat yang tinggi merepresentasikan ajaran dari Wetu Telu yang berkaitan dengan kepercayaan bahwa roh-roh leluhur bersemayam di tempat yang tinggi. ......Cultural identity in each region has characteristics or values ‹that distinguish it from others regions. One of them is the Wetu Telu Islam group.  It is  Muslim group in Lombok who still believe in animistic ancestors and anthropomorphic objects, thus forming the identity of a cultural group. The identity of the Wetu Telu Islamic group is represented in material culture, in this case the mosque. Therefore, this study intends to explain how the identity of the Wetu Telu Islamic group is represented in ancient mosques in Lombok. This study uses four ancient mosques which are relics of Islam Wetu Telu. This study uses an archaeological approach through three stages of research, data collection, data processing, and data interpretation. The results of this study are that there are ornaments and placements of ancient mosques in Lombok that represent the identity of Wetu Telu Islam. These ornaments include animal motifs in the form of dragons, deer, chickens, fish, birds and coconut trees which represent the meaning of wetu telu. In addition, the location of the mosque in a high place represents the teachings of Wetu Telu related to their belief that ancestral spirits reside in high places.
