ABSTRAK
In light of centering the discussion on how reading and writing skills help foster critical thinking (Arons, 1985; Carr, 1988; Miller & McKenna, 2016), and vice versa, this paper investigates aspects of critical thinking in the production of words in form of writing. A total of 1700 sample writing authored by 534 Indonesian academic writers of both gender, various social backgrounds, and field of studies were involved in the period of three years, in 2015-2017. The participants' essays were evaluated, provided with feedback, and coded. Results show that most Indonesian authors struggle in demonstrating their critical analysis within the three major areas in writing that highlight failure in identifying a research gap, stating a thesis, and presenting the overall analysis with data. Implications on how cultural environment may contribute to the lack of skills are reviewed, including national literacy rate consequences public or community library shortage, and the overall reading culture in Indonesia. Suggestions on some ways to help promote a better reading and writing culture are discussed.

Tesis ini membahas tentang bagaimana media massa online mengkonstruksi informasi mengenai isu budaya membaca. Metode analisis menggunakan analisis framing Robert Entman di situs berita Kompas.com dan Liputan6.com. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa framing berita didominasi oleh pendefinisian masalah budaya membaca sebagai masalah akses informasi dan kurangnya kesadaran masyarakat akan pentingnya budaya membaca. Framing berita yang sangat dipengaruhi oleh sumber berita mengakibatkan isi berita cenderung menguntungkan sumber berita. Konstruksi realitas yang dibangun oleh sumber berita. Contohnya pada sumber pemerintah yang ingin menunjukkan bahwa institusinya telah melakukan tanggung jawab dan memiliki peran strategis dalam mengatasi rendahnya budaya membaca. ......This thesis discuss about how online mass media construct information about reading culture issue using Robert Entman 39 s Framing analysis method on two news portal Kompas.com and Liputan6.com. The study result shows that news framing is dominated by the problem definition that lack of reading culture was caused by information access problem and the low awareness of people about the importance of reading culture. News Framing are immensely affected by the news source which resulting content of the news tend to be in favor of the news source.For Example, Government source oftenly create a frame wich wants to display that their institution already do their responsibilities and have strategic role to resolve the lack of reading culture.

Abstrak :
Contested Knowledge argues that the structural coupling between science and media in the context of risk politics has led to the creation of a scientific public sphere in the state of Kerala, India, and regional newspapers have become the most prominent site of public deliberation over science since the late 1990s. This new form of public engagement with science radically differed from its earlier form nurtured by the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP), the largest peoples science movement in India. The book discusses this shift and the resultant transformations of the scientific-citizen public of Kerala by examining three public controversies over science deliberated in the regional dailies in the early 2000s. Public deliberations during the controversies over clinical trials in the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Thiruvananthapuram, a series of micro-earthquakes and well collapses, and the strange phenomenon of coloured rain are analysed to understand how risks were perceived, knowledge claims were contested, disciplinary rigidities were dismantled and trust in science and the credibility of scientific institutions were re-negotiated. The book thus explores how the public contestation of knowledge staged by the mass media contributes to deepening democracy by re-instilling politics into science. Democratization of science under the agency of the scientific-citizen publics, the book suggests, is nonetheless limited as it fails to account for alternative forms of engagement offered by multiple publics. The book contends that the theory of deliberative democracy is inadequate to capture the multiplicity of public engagement with science.

Penelitian ini membahas mengenai peningkatan minat dan hudaya haca masyarakat, upaya lorum indonesia membaca dalam bersinergi menuju masyarakat melek iniormasi. Forum Indonesia Membaca adalah sebuah komunitas literasi yang memberikan andil dalam upaya peningkatan minat dan hudaya haca masyarakat. Komunitas ini hergerak dalam mernasyarakatkan kegiatan membaca dan memberikan pengaruh serta dorongan pada masyarakat melalui kegiatan-kegiatan yang melibatkan masyarakat secara langsung. Seluruh masyarakat, baik orang tua, remaja, maupun anak-anak dapat herpartisipasi secara langsung sesuai dengan topik yang menjadi minatnya masing-masing. lorunm Indonesia Membaca merupakan objek dalam penelitian ini karena komunitas ini telah menjadi fasilitator bagi komunitas-komunitas literasi di Indonesia. Kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh Forum Indonesia Membaca adalah sehagai fasilitator bagi komunitas literasi dengan herbagai strategi yang dapat menarik masyarakat agar gemar membaca, serta bersinergi dengan pihak terkait untuk mewujudkan masyarakat yang melek informasi. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Agar peneliti mendapatkan basil yang diinginkan, maka peneliti menggunakan metode dan pendekatan lokus grup. penyebaran kuesioner secara acak juga digunakan sehagai verifikasi data. Peneliti rnenyimpulkan bghwa komunitas literasi dapat herkontribusi dalam meningkatkan minat Oan hudaya haca masyarakat, mampu merangkul masyarakat untuk mewujudkan masyarakat melek inlormasi dengan mengadakan kegiatan-kegiatan yang dekat dengan keseharian masyarakat serta membantu memberikan ide serta konsep untuk menggerakkan sekelompok masyarakat yang mcmiliki potensi untuk diberdayakan.

This study is about The Increasing of Public Reading Interest and Reading Culture: efforts of Forum Indonesia Membaca in synergy with the Formation of Information Literate Society. The literacy community that have contributed in improving the reading interest and reading culture of the society. In socializing reading activities, the communities give a lot of influences and encouragement through activities related to the effort to build information literate society. The entire community, both parents, adolescents, and children can participate in accordance with their respective interest. This research takes Forum Indonesia Membaca as the object because this community is looked up as a facilitator by other literacy community The activities that can be done by the Forum Indonesia Membaca as one of the literacy community to increase public reading interest and reading culture, the strategies with those communities involved to attract the people to love reading and their efforts in synergy to create information literate society. This study was a qualitative research and using qualitative methods with Focus Group approach in order to reach an appropriate result. I conclude that the community can contribute in improving reading culture interests of society, able to embrace the community to create information literate society by organizing activities that are close to 'people's daily activities, and helping to give ideas and concepts to drive a group of the society who have the potential to he empowered.
