ABSTRACT
Treating such contemporary design and development issues as identifying customer needs, design for manufacturing, prototyping, and industrial design, Product Design and Development by Ulrich and Eppinger presents in a clear and detailed way a set of product development techniques aimed at bringing together the marketing, design, and manufacturing functions of the enterprise. The integrative methods in the book facilitate problem solving and decision making among people with different disciplinary perspectives, reflecting the current industry toward designing and developing products in cross-functional teams.

This book contains material developed for use in the interdisciplinary courses on product development that we teach. Participants in these courses include graduate students in engineering, industrial design students, and MBA students. While we aimed the book at interdisciplinary graduate-level audiences such as this, many faculty teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in engineering design have also found the material useful. Product Design and Development is also for practicing professionals. Indeed, we could not avoid writing for a professional audience because most of our students are themselves professionals who have worked either in product development or in closely related functions. This book blends the perspectives of marketing, design, and manufacturing into a single approach to product development. As a result, we provide students of all kinds with an appreciation for the realities of industrial practice and for the complex and essential roles played by the various members of product development teams. For industrial practitioners, in particular, we provide a set of product development methods that can be put into immediate practice on development projects.

......Rapid urbanization in Jakarta has contributed to the need for sustainable transportation policies which hoped would eradicate traffic congestion; by reducing the number of private vehicles, users are encouraged to switch from using their privately owned vehicles to public transportations. To reduce road capacity problem, Jakarta promoted mass public transportation and introduced Transit Oriented Development concept around those public transportation stations, with the emphasis on high population density and multifunctional area in order to promote sustainable mobility that supports integration in the city. Mass Rapid Transit is one of the newest and most advance modes of transportation in Jakarta with the government aiming for it to become the pioneer of mass public transportation uses around the country. Several stations area built along the MRT corridor with Blok M Station as one of its largest and busiest as it is located in the prime area of the city with other public transportations such as Transjakarta, RoyalTrans, and JakLingko, just a walking distance from the station. This study analyzes the integration between modes of transportation and recreational spaces around the area, as well as the concept plan that would be implemented to Taman Martha Tiahahu and Simpang Mahakam. Alongside the city design guide and governmental guide of Jakarta regarding the city, a questionnaire was also spread online to understand transit ridership habit as well as user’s comfortability and accessibility. The result of the analysis shows that the integration between modes and recreational area are considered to be adequate enough with some improvements, Taman Martha Tiahahu and Plaza Transit Mahakam hoped to be able to support integration and TOD in the area. Survey shows that the majority of people as satisfied enough with the existing condition of Blok M but would prefer an improvement on the public facility.

......Jakarta is well-known for its large and growing number of shopping centers. This growth needs to be addressed with the support of mobility facilities that make it easier for people to visit shopping centers. MRT Jakarta is a potential public transportation mode in supporting the convenience of the community in moving from and to shopping centers. This research then brings the concept of Transit-oriented Development (TOD) with shopping center as a basis to see the factors that have an impact on the decision of shopping center visitors to use the Jakarta MRT via the nearest station. The TOD concept based on the shopping center consists of the attractiveness factor of the development center and the TOD design factor (TOD Built-form Indicators). A survey of 307 respondents was conducted and tested using the Partial Least Squares – Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The results showed that the shopping center attractiveness factor and the TOD design factor influenced the shopping center visitor's decision to use the MRT via the nearest station. Meanwhile, the preferences between Jakarta residents and visitors from outside Jakarta showed no significant difference between the two groups.
