Abstrak :
ABSTRACT This research aims to investigate different type of standard protective clothes for pesticide sprayers in agricultural activities. The protective clothes are intended to be worn as work clothes in order to protect the sprayer (farmers) from health disorders. The excessive utilization of pesticides for agricultural activities results in high risks of poisoning. The results of monitoring activities conducted by health personnel of Cianjur District (1995) show that 41.]O % of farmers suffer from poisoning. This research therefore is identifies the relationship between type of protection clothes and decrease of cholinesterase content in vegetable farmers (pesticide sprayers). This research is a "quasi experiment" and uses primary data from Sindangjaya Village, Pacet Sub-district, Cianjur District. The treatment is undertaken towards protective clothes. It is designed as a "pre test - post test" experiment. The data analysis involves 45 respondents (men, 15 - 45 years) wearing three different types of protective clothes. Type 1 consist of full length-clothes with long sleeves, long pants, hat with back cover, mask, gloves. All items are made of cotton. Type 2 consists of full length-clothes with short sleeves, short pants, hat, mask, gloves. All items are made of cotton. Type 3 consists of full length-clothes with long sleeves, long pants, hat, mask and gloves. All items are made of non-cotton material. There are 9 independent variables and 1 dependent variable (decrease of cholinesterase content). Multiple linear regression is utilized to determine the magnitude of influence of respective variables. Due to the limited number of sample, there are 4 significant variables which are not analysed. Multivariate analysis results show the contribution of plant height, attitude, protective clothes, age, and experience relate to the decreasing of cholinesterase content (evidence: 41.90 %). However, the experiments do not include wind direction, nutritional status of respondents and chronic diseases. Bivariate analysis shows that the factors which can decrease cholinesterase content include type of protective clothes, attitude and environmental factors such as height of plants, temperature, humidity. This research intends to study the dangers of pesticide application. It shows that use of protective clothes may reduce pesticide exposure and skin absorption which can decrease cholinesterase content. It is therefore recommended that farmers (pesticide users) should wear protective clothes. It is also suggested that pesticide spraying should be carried out between 06.00 and 08.00 a.m. Moreover, farmers should interrupt their work when they sweat to avoid increased absorption through skin.

The book consists of multiple chapters by leading experts on the different aspects in the unique relationship between arthropods and plants, the underlying mechanisms, realized successes and failures of interactions and application for IPM, and future lines of research and perspectives. Interesting is the availability of the current genomes of different insects, mites and nematodes and different important plants and agricultural crops to bring better insights in the cross talk mechanisms and interacting players.
