Perkembangan teknologi dan globalisasi dianggap telah merubah pola pencapain status sosial menuju meritokrasi, tetapi beberapa studi tetap menunjukan bahwa faktor-faktor askripsi masih berpengaruh langsung terhadap pencapaian status sosial. Penelitian ini berfokus menguji hubungan status sosial ekonomi orangtua, prestasi akademik dan modal sosial terhadap pencapaian status okupasi mahasiswa. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan teknik purposive sampling terhadap 70 mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia yang lulus pada tahun 2004-2009. Dari ketiga variabel independen, hanya modal sosial yang memiliki hubungan signifikan dengan pencapaian status okupasi mahasiswa. Sementara itu, berdasarkan analisa data kualitatif, soft skill dan modal sosial di lingkungan kerja adalah faktor lain yang berperan mendukung pencapaian status okupasi mahasiswa.

ABSTRACT
Technological development and globalization has changed occupational attainment system toward meritocracy. However, many studies show that ascriptive factors still directly influence status attainment. This study purpose is to understand the competition of social mobility within the context of higher education, by examining the impact of socioeconomic background, academic achievement and social capital on student lsquo s occupational attainment. Using quantitative approach, the data gathered by purposive sampling method to 70 University of Indonesia students. Among three independent variable, the finding indicate only social capital has positive effect on occupational attainment. However, in depth interview reveals that soft skill and social capital within the workforce environment are another factors that significantly influence students occupational attainment.
