......Analysis on Factors Related to External Radiation Dose to Radiation Workers at Serpong Nuclear Research Centre, National Nuclear Energy Agency in 2000/2001Nuclear or radiation technology has much been used in various fields of life: agriculture, health, industry etc. Nevertheless, along with its positive advantages, nuclear energy also potentially dangerous to the workers, public and environment, whose using the nuclear energy, whenever the requirements of safety radiation are not well establish. Serpong Nuclear Research Centre is one of the centres of activities that carries out research and development of nuclear energy. In the implementation of the task, the workers are often in contact with radiation sources and radioactivity materials. The workers will then potentially expose to radiation, externally and internally. This may affect his health so that it is necessary to monitor the radiation dose to the workers and his work environment to avoid the radiation dose that exceeds the dose limit. This study has purpose to analyze factors that related to the external radiation dose received by the workers or their work environment since there were interaction among workers with his job and his work environment. The design of the study was a cross sectional approach and to know the relationship of age, sex, education, training, work duration, knowledge, attitude, equipment for radiation protection, work procedures, supervision and radiation exposure to the environment of work area with external radiation dose received. As respondents, 100 radiation workers have been collected. The result of the study shown that 10% out of 100 radiation workers received radiation dose more than 15 mSv. If compared to 2000 UNSCEAR report (1%) for global averaged dose received by radiation workers dining 1990-1994, it is seen higher. But if compared to average rate received wording to the work classification (13%), the result obtained is lower. From the result of the monitoring of work area environment, in general its obtained under 2,5 mR/hour, the highest is over 200 mR/hour but not longer. Therefore, it can still be classified as of controlled area. The result of the study using the statistical test shows that age, sex, education, training, work duration, knowledge, equipment for radiation protection have no significant relationship with external radiation dose. However, attitude, work procedures, supervision and radiation exposure of work area environment have a significant relationship with external radiation dose. From the multivariate analysis result two factors which were related with external radiation dose. The most related of that factors were radiation exposure of work area, followed by the procedures having the Odds ratio value 89, 9086 95% CI: 8, 6600-933,4321and 14, 0036, 95% Cl : 1,9476-100,6859 respectively. It is therefore advisable for the institution to take the necessary measures to minimize radiation exposure of work environment and to give more attention to their radiation workers. Establishing work procedures, as well as to provide a more thorough health examination to workers who received radiation dose exceeding 15 mSv.

ABSTRACT
Interdisciplinary in its approach and global in its perspective, Energy Systems and Sustainability: Power for a Sustainable Future, Second Edition, provides a contemporary exploration of the economic, social, environmental, and policy issues raised by current systems of energy use. Emphasizing the important issue of sustainability, it analyzes the historical evolution of the world's energy systems, the principles underlying their use, and their present status and future prospects. Beginning with a survey of basic energy concepts, the book describes the magnitude and patterns of human energy needs at various levels. It moves on to an overview of the fossil and nuclear-fuelled energy that, together with hydroelectric power and traditional biofuels, supply most of the world's commercial energy needs. Sections on economics describe the basic methods through which the monetary costs of energy are calculated, also considering the "external" costs of energy production. Finally, the book looks at the sustainability issues associated with both fossil- and nuclear-fuel use--and considers the technological advancements and social developments that might solve these problems. Providing a truly interdisciplinary approach, Energy Systems and Sustainability: Power for a Sustainable Future, Second Edition, is ideal for undergraduate engineering students and undergraduates studying policy making.

This book explains how society will face an energy crisis in the coming decades owing to increasing scarcity of fossil fuels and climate change impacts. It carefully explores this coming crisis and concisely examines all of the major technologies related to energy production (fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear) and their impacts on our society and environment. The author argues that it is wrong to pit alternatives to fossil fuels against each other and proposes that nuclear energy, although by no means free of problems, can be a viable source of reliable and carbon-free electricity. He concludes by calling for a diversified and rational mix of electricity generation in order to mitigate the effects of the energy crisis. Throughout, the book is spiced with science, history, and anecdotes in a way that ensures rewarding reading without loss of rigor.

Abstrak :
What emits more radioactivity into the atmosphere: a nuclear power plant or a thermal power plant? A thermal power station. What entails greater risk: to live near a nuclear power plant or smoke a cigarette? Smoking one cigarette is equivalent to the risk of living two years near a nuclear power plant. What is being done in a rush hour of energy demand if the wind blows? Is used in pumping systems or central gas reserve. The electricity can not be stored. How many wind turbines are used to replace a nuclear power plant? About two thousand, the last generation. Separated from each of the five hundred meters necessary because they are efficient and the row of mills would extend from Barcelona to Geneva, crossing the whole of France. It is a mistake to oppose each other alternative energies, it would make more sense to consider them allies in a great battle against the Dark Lord more powerful every day : climate change, which could very well destroy, within one or two centuries, our beloved and battered globalized region.

Abstrak :
During the 1970s, hundreds of thousands across Western Europe protested against civil nuclear energy. Nowhere were they more visible than in France and Germany, two countries where environmentalism seems to have diverged greatly since. This book recovers the shared, transnational history of the early anti-nuclear movement, showing how low-level interactions among diverse activists led to far-reaching changes in both countries. Because nuclear energy was such a multivalent symbol, protest against it was simultaneously broad-based and highly fragmented. Concerned citizens in communities near planned facilities felt that nuclear technology represented an outside intervention that potentially threatened their health, material existence, and way of life. In the decade after 1968, their concerns coalesced with more overtly political criticisms of consumer society, the state, and militarism. Farmers, housewives, hippies, anarchists, and many more who defied simple categorization joined forces to oppose nuclear power, but the movement remained internally contradictory and outwardly unpredictable, not least with regard to violence at demonstrations. By analysing the transnational dimensions, diverse outcomes, and internal divisions of anti-nuclear protest, this book provides an encompassing and nuanced understanding of one of the largest new social movements in post-war Western Europe and situates it within a decade of upheaval and protest. Drawing extensively on oral history interviews as well as police, media, and activist sources, this book tells the story of the people behind protest, showing how individuals at the grassroots built up a movement that transcended national borders as well as political and social differences.
