Abstrak :
The acceptance of female leadership in mosques and madrassas is a significant change from much historical practice, signalling the mainstream acceptance of some form of female Islamic authority in many places. This volume investigates the diverse range of female religious leadership present in contemporary Muslim communities in South, East and Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America, with chapters discussing its emergence, the limitations placed upon it, and its wider impact, as well as the physical and virtual spaces used by women to establish and consolidate their authority. It will be invaluable as a reference text, as it is the first to bring together analysis of female Islamic leadership in geographically and ideologically-diverse Muslim communities worldwide.

Abstrak :
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis konstruksi politik tubuh dalam tokoh-tokoh perempuan utama dalam novel Pillars of Salt dan My Name is Salma karya Fadia Faqir, serta menyimpulkan apakah ilustrasi perjuangan para tokoh tersebut dalam melawan manifestasi politik tubuh yang opresif mendobrak atau justru menguatkan representasi Barat mengenai perempuan Muslim. Menggunakan metodologi kualitatif-deskriptif dengan pendekatan close reading sebagai metode analisis, penelitian ini berangkat dari stereotipe perempuan Muslim dari sudut pandang Barat yang cenderung negatif dan asumsi bahwa novel-novel penulis perempuan Arab umumnya bertujuan untuk mendobrak stereotipe tersebut. Penemuan penelitian ini adalah: pertama, tokoh-tokoh protagonis dalam kedua novel menjadi obyek dari berbagai bentuk politik tubuh yang dikenakan para tokoh laki-laki Timur maupun Barat, dan kedua, meskipun kedua teks tersebut terlihat menguatkan representasi Barat bahwa perempuan Muslim mengalami opresi, namun sesungguhnya mendobrak anggapan Barat bahwa perempuan Muslim cenderung pasif dan patuh. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa patriarki dan kolonialisme merupakan dua sistem yang membatasi resistensi dan menguatkan marjinalisasi perempuan, dan media operasi kedua sistem tersebut adalah tubuh. ...... This research aims to analyse the construction of body politics in the female protagonists in Pillars of Salt and My Name is Salma by Fadia Faqir, and to draw a conclusion on whether the illustration of the female characters‘ struggles against the oppressive manifestation of body politics succeed to challenge, or conversely to strengthen, western representation of Muslim women. Using a qualitative methodology with a close reading approach as a method of analysis, this research builds on the western stereotype of Muslim women that tends to be negative and the assumption that Anglophone Arab female writers commonly intends to challenge such stereotype. The findings of this research are: first, the female protagonists in the novels of Pillars of Salt and My Name Is Salma underwent several forms of body politics that were imposed by both eastern and western men, and second, although these texts seem to strengthen western representations of Muslim women as oppressed, but it actually challenge the western portrayals of Muslim women as passive and obedient. This research concludes that it is both patriarchy and colonialism that overturn their resistance and strengthen female marginalisation, and that both systems take place first and foremost through the body.

Tesis ini menganalisis konstruksi identitas perempuan Islam dalam Hijabers Community. Tesis ini mempertanyakan konstruksi identitas perempuan Islam yang direpresentasikan dalam Hijabers Community, dan bagaimana anggota komunitas merespon konstruksi tersebut. Pemerolehan data dilakukan melalui pendekatan etnografi dengan wawancara mendalam kepada komite dan anggota Hijabers Community, dan observasi kegiatan komunitas. Tesis ini menggunakan konsep identitas dan representasi identitas oleh Stuart Hall (1990, 1996, dan 1997). Hasil analisis tesis ini menunjukkan adanya negosiasi antara nilai-nilai kesederhanaan (modesty) dan kemodernan gaya hidup urban (sophisticated) terhadap konstruksi identitas perempuan Muslim dalam Hijabers Community. ...... This thesis analyses the construction of Indonesian Muslim women's identity in Hijabers Community. It questions the construction of Muslim women's identity represented by Hijabers Community and how its members react towards the construction of identity. This thesis uses ethnography approach with observation and depth-interview with the committees and members of Hijabers Community. This thesis deploys the concept of identity and the representation of identity by Stuart Hall (1990, 1996, and 1997). The results show the negotiation between modesty and modern sophisticated urban living in the construction of Muslim women's identity.

Tesis ini menganalisa konstruksi identitas perempuan Muslim di dalam edisi cetak majalah Aquila Asia dan laman Facebook majalah tersebut. Tesis ini mempertanyakan konstruksi identitas perempuan Muslim oleh majalah Aquila Asia; dan bagaimana pembacanya bereaksi atas identitas perempuan Muslim yang dikonstruksikan oleh Aquila Asia di ruang virtual (internet) untuk menunjukkan konstruksi identitas kelompok Muslim yang terjadi di dalamnya. Tesis ini menggunakan konsep identitas dan identifikasi yang dipaparkan oleh Stuart Hall (1995) dan konsep Muslimwoman dari Miriam Cooke (2008). Hasil analisa dari tesis ini memperlihatkan kompleksitas konstruksi identitas sekaligus proses identifikasi bagi kelompok perempuan Muslim dan 'usaha-usaha' oleh perempuan Muslim sendiri, sebagai pembaca, untuk mendefinisikan siapa mereka melalui ruang virtual yang disediakan oleh Aquila Asia. ......This thesis analyzes the construction of Muslim women's identity in Aquila Asia magazine and its Facebook page. It questions the identity construction of Muslim women in the magazine and how its readers react towards the identity constructed by Aquila Asia in the internet, to show the identity of Muslim groups inside the media. This thesis deploys the concepts of identity and identification from Stuart Hall (1995) and Muslimwoman by Miriam Cooke (2008). The results show the complexity of identity construction and identification process for Muslim women, and also 'efforts' of Muslim women as readers to define themselves in the virtual space provided by Aquila Asia.
