Abstrak :
Tesis ini membahas motif mother dalam novel Searching for Sylvie Lee (2019) karya Jean Kwok. Teks dianalisis dengan pendekatan struktur naratif Mieke Bal, dan teori Kepribadian Carl Gustav Jung. Analisis struktur naratif teks membuktikan ketidakhadiran figur ibu menyebabkan tokoh utama memiliki banyak permasalahan dalam kehidupannya. Selanjutnya, tokoh utama Sylvie Lee dikaji lebih lanjut menggunakan teori kepribadian Jung khususnya pada motif arketipe mother. Analisis membuktikan bahwa tokoh utama mencari figur ibu dan mendapatkan figur ibu pada tokoh nenek. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekosongan bentuk relasi antara ibu dan anak pada masa lalu membuat tokoh utama kehilangan self. Tesis ini diharapkan menjadi sebuah refleksi masyarakat dalam menghadapi permasalahan terhadap diri sendiri dan sosial terutama ibu. Hasil penelitian dapat digunakan untuk mempelajari fenomena migrasi yang menyebabkan kesenjangan hubungan antara anak dan ibu. ......This thesis discusses mother’s motive in Searching for Sylvie Lee novel by Jean Kwok (2019). Text is analyzed through narative theory by Mieke Bal as structural approach and personality theory by Carl Gustav Jung. Analysis on the structure and narrative text is carried out to prove the absence of mother’s figure causes Sylvie Lee having a lot of prombles in her life. Furthermore, the position of Sylvie Lee as main character is further examined through personality analysis by Jung especially on archetype of mother. The result of the analysis by Jung shows that the main character searches mother’s figure and gets her mother’s figure from grandma. The result of the study shows that the absense of relation between mother and daughter in the past makes the main character loses her self. This thesis is expected to be a reflection to the community in dealing with self and social especially mother. The results of the study can be used to learn the migration phenomenon which resulted in gap relation between mother and daughter.
