[Particle verbs (two separate words constituting a single lexical unit) are a notorious problem in linguistics. Is a particle verb like look up one word or two? It has its own entry in dictionaries, as if it is one word, but look and up can be split up in a sentence: we can say He looked the information up and He looked up the information. But why can we say He looked it up but not He looked up it? In English look and up can only be separated by a direct object, but in Dutch the two parts can be separated over a much longer distance. How did such hybrid verbs arise and how do they function? How can we make sense of them in modern theories of language structure? Abstrak :
This article concerns establishing a plausible connection between the word jang(an) in colloquial Malay varieties and jang-, a form which negates infinitives, in the diasporic contact variety Sri Lankan Malay. The principal claim is that jang(an) marks irrealis modality in Southeast Asian Malay varieties, in which it is frequently (optionally) deployed in negative subjunctive-like embedded clauses. A related claim, dependent on the first of the two, is that the irrealis interpretation conveyed by jang(an) makes it a semantically plausible bridge from a Malay grammar with clausal symmetry to the grammar of Sri Lankan Malay. In Sri Lankan Malay, embedded clauses are frequently non-finite, with infinitives similarly conveying irrealis meaning. Sri Lankan Malay jang- is in complementary distribution with the affirmative infinitival prefix me-, which is also derived from a marker of irrealis modality (mau) in colloquial Southeast Asian Malay varieties.

Salah satu implikasi dari percampuran bahasa adalah keberadaan code-mixing antara dua bahasa atau lebih, misalnya antara bahasa Prancis dan bahasa Inggris yang dikenal dengan istilah Franglais. Artikel ini membahas penggunaan franglais dari segi morfosintaksis dengan mengamati pembentukan dan posisi franglais tersebut dalam kalimat. Data yang digunakan adalah artikel pameran busana musim panas 2017 keluaran rumah mode Chanel oleh majalah Vogue Paris, ELLE, dan Madame Figaro. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan teknik studi kepustakaan. Analisis dilakukan berdasarkan teori sintaksis Le Querler (1994) dan teori morfologi Spencer dan Zwicky (2001). Hasil yang ditemukan adalah bahwa secara morfologis dan dalam struktur kalimat, franglais diungkapkan secara berbeda-beda dalam setiap majalah. Secara morfologis, sebagian besar kata bahasa Inggris yang digunakan merupakan bentuk derivasi dan terdapat perbedaan antara ketiga majalah dalam struktur kalimat franglais yang berkaitan dengan redaksi majalah tersebut. Secara struktural, kalimat-kalimat yang ditemukan menggunakan franglais dalam posisi expansion perluasan dalam kegunaannya untuk menjelaskan informasi tertentu. Abstrak :
This is a preliminary description of the Malay variety used as a lingua franca in the Malaysian state of Sabah at the northernmost top of Borneo. The paper discusses a number of common linguistic features that distinguish Sabah Malay from other Malay varieties and analyses these features from a historical linguistic perspective. While it is argued that Sabah Malay has a close historical relation with other Malay dialects spoken in Borneo, especially Brunei Malay, the vernacular is also influenced phonologically and lexically by Sabah?s indigenous and immigrant speech communities. Words and sentences recorded or elicited during fieldwork in various parts of Sabah illustrate these points.
