"Tulisan ini membahas paradoks modernitas pada interior sebagai bentuk negosiasi pada pengalaman keseharian terkait berbagai aspek kehidupan modern. Kajian ini mengidentifikasi hadirnya modernizing force sebagai pembentuk kehidupan modern, yang hadir dari segi nilai internal, membentuk perubahan fungsi ruang terkait ekspresi diri dan struktur sosial, maupun sistem eksternal, terkait dengan revolusi material-konstruksi dan sistem produksi massal. Skripsi ini kemudian merespon dorongan tersebut melalui inserting realized maupun replicating idealized, dipahami sebagai pemrograman berbasis realitas sosial-budaya atau berbasis bahasa universal. Tulisan ini melihat adanya paradoks ketegangan yang muncul dalam pemrograman interior saat realita pengalaman dan gagasan ideal bertemu membentuk interior modern, yang menghadirkan negosiasi dalam pendekatan perancangan. Skripsi ini mengangkat adanya strategi perancangan seperti dynamic zoning, adaptive modularity, dan identity integration yang kemudian hadir sebagai refleksi paradoks modernitas. Skripsi ini mengeksplorasi studi kasus proses renovasi apartemen oleh Shaun Tompkins di Melbourne, yang merupakan bagian dari program konten Youtube Never Too Small yang membahas berbagai rancangan interior pada lahan terbatas. Proyek ini menampilkan bagaimana fluiditas batas spasial dikelola dengan susunan objek yang membentuk area dan transisi, bagaimana modularitas furnitur diadaptasi merespon variasi ukuran dan skala serta portabilitas fungsi, dan bagaimana objek personal dan ekspresi individu membentuk identitas ruang dan makna. Hasil studi menunjukkan paradoks modernitas interior dapat dimaknai sebagai medan negosiasi antara keterbatasan fisik, ekspresi personal, dan tuntutan fungsional, membentuk ruang domestik tidak hanya sebagai tempat tinggal, melainkan sebagai medium artikulasi identitas dan pengalaman hidup. Sehingga strategi pemrograman interior modern yang hadir mengakui dan mengelola paradoks ketegangan modernitas.

This paper discusses the paradox of modernity in the interior as a form of negotiation in everyday experiences of modernity. This study identifies the presence of modernizing force in the modern life, existing as internal values that form spatial changes due to the need of self-expression and social structure; as well as external systems which is shaped by evolution of material and construction technologies enabled by mass production systems. This thesis then highlights that particular programming of modernity emerge either through inserting the realized socio-cultural reality or replicating idealized form of universal language. This paper sees that the different objectives of these programs generates tension and paradox within a modern interior, which then creates negotiations in the design approach. This thesis highlights the existence of design strategies that demonstrate such paradox, comprising of the dynamic zoning, adaptive modularity, and identity integration. This thesis explores a case study of the apartment renovation process by Shaun Tompkins in Melbourne, which is part of the Never Too Small Youtube content program that discusses various interior designs that respond to limitations of space. The project shows how the design is informed by paradox of modernity. The arrangements of objects that form areas and transitions reflect fluidity of spatial boundaries, modularity of furniture respond to variations in size and scale and portability of function, while the personal objects and individual expressions shape the identity of space and meaning. The results of the study show that the paradox of interior modernity can be interpreted as a field of negotiation between physical limitations, personal expression, and functional demands, forming domestic space not only as a place to live, but also as a medium for the articulation of identity and life experience. The modern interior programming and its corresponding design strategy recognize and manages such paradox, as a continuous negotiation towards modernity."
