"Ras campuran Jepang adalah salah satu kelompok minoritas dalam masyarakat Jepang. Terhitung sampai tahun 2013, sekitar 1 dari 49 bayi yang lahir di Jepang merupakan ras campuran Jepang. Meskipun demikian, sebagian besar masyarakat Jepang masih menganggap Jepang adalah negara dengan masyarakat homogen yang hanya memiliki satu etnis. Hal ini menyebabkan ras campuran Jepang kerap dipandang sebagai orang asing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan identitas ras campuran Jepang di masa sekarang dengan menganalisis subjek-subjek dalam film dokumenter Hāfu: The Mixed-Race Experience in Japan (2013) yang disutradarai oleh Megumi Nishikura dan Lara Perez Takagi. Penelitian ini menggunakan konsep Hybrid Identity milik Laurel D. Kamada. Analisis dijabarkan secara deskriptif dengan melihat cuplikan keseharian para subjek ras campuran Jepang dan wawancara yang diliput dalam film dokumenter tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga aspek Hybrid Identity yang ditemukan dalam film dokumenter, yaitu identitas yang dibentuk dari perbedaan, identitas yang dibentuk dari percampuran, dan identitas yang dapat berubah.

Mixed-race Japanese is one of the minority groups in Japanese society. As of 2013, around one in 49 babies born in Japan are of mixed heritage. However, majority of Japanese people still consider Japan a country of homogeneous society that only has one ethnicity. Because of this, mixed-race Japanese often being viewed as foreigners. The objective of this research is to explain the identity of present-day mixed-race Japanese by analyzing the subjects of the documentary film Hāfu: The Mixed-Race Experience in Japan (2013), directed by Megumi Nishikura and Lara Perez Takagi. Laurel D. Kamada`s concept of Hybrid Identity is used to answer the objective. The analysis is explained descriptively by examining the daily life footage of the documentary film subjects and interviews covered in the documentary. The findings of this research showed that there are three aspects of the Hybrid Identity found in this documentary: identity shaped by differences, identity shaped by mixing, and identity that can change"

"Tesis ini membahas pesan terkait keluarga dalam retorika pidato dari presiden terpilih Amerika Serikat ke-44 Barack Obama yang pertama kali dalam sejarah, merupakan keturunan kulit hitam atau mixed-race. Pesan tentang keutuhan keluarga serta peran orang tua tunggal mengambil data dari lima buah teks pidato Presiden Obama di era kepemimpinan pertama yakni tahun 2008-2012. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan dasar teori Retorika Aristoteles dan lima pertanyaan teoritik model komunikasi Harold D. Laswell yakni siapa, berkata apa, menggunakan media apa, kepada siapa, dan apa pengaruhnya serta pendekatan-pendekatan lainnya. Dari hasil penelitian ini diperoleh bukti bahwa pesan tentang keutuhan keluarga serta peran orang tua tunggal yang dibungkus narasi politik American dream yang dilakukan Obama masih relevan diutarakan di zaman modern dengan tantangan yang begitu kompleks ini. Masyarakat Amerika Serikat nyatanya tetap membutuhkan hal-hal baik dan ideal yang diutarakan oleh seorang pemimpin negara melalui retorika pidato yang disampaikannya.

This thesis examines family related messages in the rhetoric speech of US President-elect Barack Obama 44th which for the first time in a history, is a descendant of black or mixedrace. Messages on the family unity and the role of single parent are retrieved as data from five text of the speech of President Obama in the first leadership era 2008-2012. The method used is qualitative based on Aristotle Rhetoric theory and the Harold D. Laswel?s model, specifically looking at top five theoretical questions that are: who, says what, in which channel, to whom, and with what effect and other approaches. The results of this study showed evidences that the message of family unity and the role of single parent wrapped up in the political narrative of the Obama?s American Dream is still relevant in this modern era . US society, in fact still requires, such ideals to be expressed by a head of state through the rhetoric speeches ."
