"Both ecological and population changes are important factors to encourage social and cultural changes in a society. Such changes might not be absorbed and accepted if it against community cultural values and it might raises and inner obsession. Hence, it leads missing cultural ethos and identity in society. This article elaborates those problems - from historical perspective - with a case of Malay people In East Sumatera. The ecological and population changes have happened since 19th century when Dutch founded wide plantations. With coming of various ethnic groups to East Sumatera, it insisted Malays to be minority in terms of occupation, political government, business and number of population especially in urban areas. It occurred necession and indifferent attitude (apathy) of Malay towards the fast changes. "

The identities of 'Malay' and 'Indonesia' are often constructed in a binary position. This kind of positioning is precarious to sowing the seeds of grassroots conflict and cycle of violence. By taking the Malay context more specifically in East Sumatra, this study identifies how the narrative of cultural trauma behind the 1946-1965 cycle of violence in the new media constructs the identity of the East Sumatran Malay youth nowadays. Through digital ethnographic methods, this study explores the process of identity construction that originates from a variety of cultural trauma responses in the Lentera Timur Channel's youtube comments. The identity construction process is actually accommodated by the SumatraTimur.com media as a lumbung commoning. After examining how the expression of self-determination as a response to the cultural trauma articulated in SumateraTimur.com, this study finds that the new media has opened a third space for discussing Malayness and Indonesianess relations that are more harmonious and humane in a nation-building process."
