Sengketa Laut Cina Selatan telah menjadi konflik kepentingan di antara negara-negara kawasan tersebut. Republik Rakyat Tiongkok (RRT) mengklaim sekitar 90 persen wilayah Laut Cina Selatan melalui penggunaan peta sembilan garis putus-putus namun klaim ini bertentangan dengan klaim kedaulatan negara lain, termasuk Filipina. Hal itulah yang menjadi pokok bahasan dalam artikel ini. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor utama yang mendorong Tiongkok tetap mempertahankan klaimnya terhadap Laut Cina Selatan dan untuk mengetahui seberapa efektif peta nine-dashed line untuk mempertahankan Laut Cina Selatan terutama dalam sengketanya dengan Filipina. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah metode kualitiatif dengan pendekatan ilmu sejarah. Adapun tahap penelitian mencakup heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa meskipun RRT menggunakan peta dengan nine dashed line sebagai dasar klaim di Laut Cina Selatan namun ternyata hal itu kurang efektif untuk mendukung klaimnya atas Laut Cina Selatan. ......The South China Sea dispute has become a conflict of interest among the countries of the region. The People's Republic of China (PRC) claims about 90 percent of the South China Sea through the use of the nine-dash line map but this claim conflicts with the sovereignty claims of other countries, including the Philippines. That is the subject of discussion in this article. The main objective of this research is to find out the main factors that encourage China to maintain its claim to the South China Sea and to find out how effective the nine-dashed line map is in defending the South China Sea, especially in its dispute with the Philippines. The research method used in this article is a qualitative method with a historical science approach. The research stages include heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study show that even though the PRC uses a map with nine dashed lines as the basis for claims in the South China Sea, it turns out to be less effective in supporting its claims over the South China Sea.
