Inflammation is one of the body's defence mechanism against irritants, infectious agents, and injury. During its process, pain, swelling, redness, and other discomforts also occur as cardinal sign of inflammation. Therefore, people seek for medicine to encounter those effect. Sereh is one of the herb plants which have anti inflammation effect. However, effect of sereh on inflamed oral mucous has not been clinically examined. The aim of this research is to examine and to compare the influence of sereh dapur (Cymbopogon citratus) and sereh wangi (cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) extract on inflamed oral mucous induced by Hydrogen Peroxide 10%. Thirteen wistar rats were used in this research and divided four groups; control group I (3 rats), control II (3 rats), sereh dapur extract groups (4 rats) and sereh wangi extract groups (3 rats). All rats in sereh dapur, sereh wangi and control II groups received 3x10 minutes application of Hydrogen Peroxide 10% on their vestibulum for 3 days, while rats in control group I received application of Aquadest. On the 4th day, all groups that received Hydrogen Peroxide 10% were application 3x5 minutes for 3 days for each substance. After rats have been killed, their oral mucous were processed and examined under microscope. Statistical result shows there are differences on oral mucous reaction between sereh dapur and sereh wangi extract with control groups. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that both sereh dapur dan sereh wangi can reduce oral mucous inflammation induced by Hydrogen Peroxide 10%."

"Ketombe merupakan gangguan kulit kepala yang diakibatkan oleh salah satu jenis khamir yaitu Malassezia furfur. Gangguan kulit kepala ini dapat dikendalikan dengan menggunakan sediaan farmasetika kosmetik, seperti sampo. Berbagai agen antijmur baik sintetis maupun alami digunakan dalam formulasi sediaan antiketombe tersebut. Serai wangi (Cymbopogon winterianus J.) umum digunakan oleh masyarakat Indonesia sebagai obat-obatan tradisional. Kandungan utama dari minyak atsiri tanaman ini, sitronelal, terbukti memiliki aktivitas antibakteri dan antijamur.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memformulasikan minyak serai wangi ke dalam tiga formula sampo yang berbeda konsentrasinya yaitu F1 (1,0%); F2 (1,5%); dan F3 (2,0%). Uji stabilitas dilakukan terhadap sampo, yaitu penyimpanan pada tiga suhu yang berbeda; suhu rendah (4±2°C), suhu kamar (27±2°C), dan suhu tinggi (40±2°C); uji sentrifugasi, dan cycling test. Parameter yang digunakan untuk uji kestabilan, antara lain penampilan fisik, viskositas atau konsistensi, diameter globul, dan pH. Dari hasil penelitian, sampo mengandung minyak serai wangi dapat disimpulkan stabil selama penyimpanan 8 minggu.

Dandruff is a scalp disorder caused by a type of yeast, Malassezia furfur. Scalp disorders can be controlled using medicated-cosmetic preparations, such as shampoo. Various antifungal agents, either synthetic or herbal compounds have been used in the formulation of the anti-dandruff shampoo. Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus J.) is commonly used by Indonesian people as traditional medicines. The main compound of the essential oil of this plant, citronella, is shown to have antibacterial and antifungal activity.
The aims of this study were to formulate citronella oil into three different shampoo formulas with various concentration of F1 (1.0%); F2 (1.5%); and F3 (2.0%). Stability tests performed on shampoos consist of storage at different temperatures; low temperature (4±2°C), room temperature (27±2°C), and high temperature (40±2°C); centrifugation test, and cycling test. Parameters used on this test are physical appearance, viscosity or consistency, globul size, and pH. This formulated shampoo are stable in storage for 8 weeks based on the test above."

"Minyak sereh mengandung senyawa-senyawa yang bermanfaat di bidang industri dan farmasi seperti sitronelal, sitronelol, geranial dan geraniol. Senyawa-senyawa tersebut memiliki struktur yang mirip namun berbeda pada gugus fungsinya. Karena itu, dapat digunakan oksidasi dan reduksi untuk meningkatkan kualitas dan kadar senyawa. Metode oksidasi reduksi yang dapat digunakan adalah elektrokimia. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan elektrolisis terhadap minyak sereh dengan menggunakan elektroda platina kasa. Studi awal dilakukan terhadap potensial oksidasi dan reduksi bagi senyawa dalam minyak sereh dengan metode voltametri siklik, disertai penambahan larutan buffer fosfat 0,05M pada sistem reduksi. Setelah itu, dilakukan penentuan kondisi terbaik dengan nilai yield produk tertinggi.
Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan kenaikan jumlah senyawa asetal dari sitronellal dengan luas area sebesar 48,63 diukur dengan instrumentasi GC-MS. Hal ini muncul disebabkan adanya metanol yang dapat bereaksi dengan sitronelal menjadi senyawa asetalnya. Hasil reduksi dengan kondisi asam senyawa aldehid bervariasi karena pengaruh potensial, waktu, dan volume larutan elektrolit. Hasil reduksi diukur pada instrumentasi GC menunjukkan yield sebesar 10,47 untuk sitronellol dan 10,34 untuk geraniol dengan potensial reduksi -1,2V dalam waktu 120 menit dan volume larutan elektrolit 30 ml.

Citronella oil contains many applicable compounds in industry and pharmaceutical field such as citronellal, citronellol, geranial, and geraniol. The compounds have similarity in structure, but different in their functional group. Oxidation and reduction to its functional group can be used to increase its quality and quantity. One of the common oxidation reduction method used is electrochemistry. In this research, electrolysis of citronella oil using platinum gauze electrode was conducted. Earlier study of oxidation and reduction potential were carried out by cyclic voltammetry, with addition of buffer phosphate solution 0,05M to reduction system. Determination of condition with the highest product yield was carried out.
The results showed the increase of citronellal dimethyl acetal from citronellal with 48,63 area on GC MS. This was due to methanol reaction with citronellal to form its acetal derivation. Reduction process showed the varied results with potential, time, and volume of electrolyte solutions rsquo influences. Results from reduction process in acidic conditions on GC showed the yield of 10,47 and 10,34 for citronellol and geraniol, with the potential of 1,2V, 120 minutes of reaction, and 30 ml of electrolyte solution rsquo s volume.
