"This paper is to address problems of repeatation and lack of novelty and sophistication in literary as often research as often evident in under graduate and graduate theses in the department of English. Many of them do not go beyond anatomy and taxonomy of text. While attempts are made recently to experiment with various contemporary literature theories or to cross-breed literature with popular culture and media studies, the execution of these projects is yet flawed. It appears that the 'input'(what the student read) and the 'output'(what that write) are equally poor.
This paper suggests that literary research is but a mature recognition and handing of ways of reading and ways of writing. It explores 1) informative reading/writing,2) interpretative reading/writing3) critical reading/writing,and 4) creative reading/writing. Albeit its nature as a 'case study' focusing as it does on research done at the University of Sanata Dharma, Yogyakarta, this paper hopes to contribute to debate about the present shape and future direction of research in literature."
