Computational methods in engineering brings to light the numerous uses of numerical methods in engineering. It clearly explains the application of these methods mathematically and practically, emphasizing programming aspects when appropriate. Abstrak :
This book covers a variety of topics in mechanics, with a special emphasis to fluid mechanics and energy transfer. Chapters are based on selected contributions presented during the Algerian Congress of Mechanics (CAM 2017), held on November 26 - 30, 2017, in Constantine, Algeria. The book covers theoretical analysis, modeling, and numerical treatment of performance-related problems of new refrigeration systems, heating and cooling. It reports on experimental research to solve problems related to the flow of microfluids, and relevant applications in the areas of chemical engineering, biochemistry, biomedicine and renewable energy. Further topics include methods for maintenance of mechanical structures, strength, wear, fracture, damage and life of structures, and image processing solutions for the design and 3D manufacturing of mechanical parts. During the last 20-25 years, classical mechanics has undergone an important revival associated with the progress in non-linear dynamics, applications of Noether’s theorem and the extension of variational principles in various interdisciplinary sciences (for instance, magnetofluid dynamics). Thus, there ought to exist a book concerned with the applied analytical formalism, first developed in the frame of theoretical mechanics, which has proved to be one of the most efficient tools of investigation in the entire arena of science. The present book is an outcome of the authors’ teaching experience over many years in different countries and for different students studying diverse fields of physics. This volume contains a selection of contributions that were presented at the Modeling and Optimization : Theory and Applications Conference (MOPTA) held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA on August 18-20, 2010. Abstrak :
This book fulfills the global need to evaluate measurement results along with the associated uncertainty. In the book, together with the details of uncertainty calculations for many physical parameters, probability distributions and their properties are discussed. Definitions of various terms are given and will help the practicing metrologists to grasp the subject. The book helps to establish international standards for the evaluation of the quality of raw data obtained from various laboratories for interpreting the results of various national metrology institutes in an international inter-comparisons. For the routine calibration of instruments, a new idea for the use of pooled variance is introduced. The uncertainty calculations are explained for (i) independent linear inputs, (ii) non-linear inputs and (iii) correlated inputs. The merits and limitations of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) are discussed. Monte Carlo methods for the derivation of the output distribution from the input distributions are introduced. The Bayesian alternative for calculation of expanded uncertainty is included. A large number of numerical examples is included.

Abstrak :
This book offers a fundamental and practical introduction to the use of computational methods, particularly finite element methods, in the simulation of fluid flows in porous media. It is the first book to cover a wide variety of flows, including single-phase, two-phase, black oil, volatile, compositional, nonisothermal, and chemical compositional flows in both ordinary porous and fractured porous media. In addition, a range of computational methods are used, and benchmark problems of nine comparative solution projects organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers are presented for the first time in book form. Computational Methods for Multiphase Flows in Porous Media reviews multiphase flow equations and computational methods to introduce basic terminologies and notation. A thorough discussion of practical aspects of the subjects is presented in a consistent manner, and the level of treatment is rigorous without being unnecessarily abstract. Each chapter ends with bibliographic information and exercises.
