Chinese Community in Roa Malaka Jakarta and Conservation Effort for Their Historical BuildingsRoa Malaka is one of the Chinese historical districts that play a role in the growth of Jakarta City. As an area that has many traditional Chinese buildings, the local Government through department of conservation tries to conserve the buildings in order to vitalize tourism.
In this thesis, I have shown the changes of meaning of historical buildings to Chinese society in Roa Malaka Jakarta through five buildings that built around 1895 until 1945. The change of the meaning in that buildings shown by: loss of special room which become the core of Chinese building that is for ancestor worship or join it with family room or bedroom. The inexistence of special Room for the ancestor worship is because of the most rooms in their dwelling are used predominately for trading.
In this thesis, I also show the lack of efforts of Chinese society in Roa Malaka in the case of taking care of their historical buildings. Three of the buildings have turned into modem building, whereas two other buildings still in the genuine form but in a poor condition (not maintained well).
The changes that happened in those historical buildings are because of the mindset of Chinese people in Roa Malaka have changed. The change of their mindsets influenced by education factor, religious political factor, and the growth of Jakarta that cause destruction of the original buildings.
This thesis attempts to answer two questions: 1) what is the meaning of historical building to Chinese society in Roa Malaka Jakarta and 2) how is their effort conserve their historical buildings."

ABSTRACT
Sembahyang rebut or Chiong Si Ku (枪事故-Qiāng shì gù) was originated from the celebration of the ancestor spirit or Zhong yuan jie (中元节-Zhōng yuán jié). Sembayang rebut is one of the biggest celebration for chinese people whom are confucianism adherent in Indonesia. They call the celebration day as Chit ngiat pan (七月半-Qī yuè bàn) that according to Chinese
calendar happens on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. To the Chinese people, besides for honor the ancestors, sembahyang rebut is also to avoid bad luck on that year by asking for protection from the ancestor spirit. On Setya Bhakti Temple, Koba, Central Bangka even sembayang rebut has religious value, but the non-Chinese and non-confucianism adherents take a big role on the event. This journal is going to discuss about sembahyang rebut in general, the process, and procedures, the meaning of sembahyang rebut to the Chinese and non-Chinese people and the role of the local people to the event."

"This paper examines some significant elements of the pig story (tiboi sakkoko). This tale contains crucial information about the collective identity, ancestors and historical events affecting particular Mentawai kin-groups. As families do not preserve their culture and traditions in written form, storytellers of kin-groups have narrated the pig story from generation to generation so as to preserve it carefully. In the course of time, storytellers establish particular ways of telling their stories so as to remember the content and plot of the stories easily. Through the pig story, members of kin groups also recollect their ancestral place of origin and plots of ancestral lands. The role of human memory is indispensable to recalling all these important elements. Therefore, this paper analyses memories of the past of different family generations. To achieve its aims, this paper also evaluates the roles of family stories in the culture and traditions of Mentawai society."

"Research by anthropologists engaged with the Comparative Austronesia Project (Australian National University) has amassed an enormous data set for ethnological comparison between the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies, a language group to which nearly all Indonesian societies also belong. Comparative analysis reveals that ancestor veneration is a key-shared feature among Austronesian religious cosmologies; a feature that also resonates strongly with the ancestor-focused religions characteristic of East Asia. Characteristically, the religions of Austronesian-speaking societies focus on the core idea of a sacred time and place of ancestral origin and the continuous flow of life that is issuing forth from this source. Present-day individuals connect with the place and time of origin though ritual acts of retracing a historical path of migration to its source. What can this seemingly exotic notion of a flow of life reveal about the human condition writ large? Is it merely a curiosity of the ethnographic record of this region, a traditional religious insight forgotten even by many of the people whose traditional religion this is, but who have come under the influence of so-called world religions? Or is there something of great importance to be learnt from the Austronesian approach to life? Such questions have remained unasked until now, I argue, because a systematic cosmological bias within western thought has largely prevented us from taking Ancestor Religion and other forms of “traditional knowledge” seriously as an alternative truth claim. While I have discussed elsewhere the significance of Ancestor Religion in reference to my own research in highland Bali, I will attempt in this paper to remove this bias by its roots. I do so by contrasting two modes of thought: the “incremental dualism” of precedence characteristic of Austronesian cultures and their Ancestor Religions, and the “transcendental dualism” of mind and matter that has been a central theme within the cultural history of Western European thought. I argue for a deeper appreciation of Ancestor Religion as the oldest and most pervasive of all world religions."
