"This book offers a new slant on the relations between warfare and state construction. Historians looking at how war funding impinged on state development, and how state growth made wars more demanding affairs, have tended to downplay the role of military provisioning entrepreneurs. Written off as corrupt and selfish, these entrepreneurs conflicted with the received view of a rationally growing and modernizing state. This book (or the Spanish case during the eighteenth century) shows that the state-entrepreneur relationship was much more fluid and constant than previously thought. The state was not able to enforce a top-down military supply policy; at the same time it benefited from the entrepreneurs collaboration and their shared mercantilist ambitions. The entrepreneurs mobilization of Spains military supplies was crucial for extending state authority and helped to knit together national and colonial markets. However, the fluid state-entrepreneur relationship gradually became shrouded in privileges and monopolies, not so much driven by ideology or imposed by the entrepreneurs, but rather as an arrangement exploited by the state to boost its control over them, whittling down middlemen and ensuring the solvency and creditworthiness of the chosen few. This arrangement spiralled into a risky interdependence and cramped entrepreneurial competition. The book furnishes new insights into the role of military entrepreneurs in debates about warfare and state construction."

"This study analyses how the link between politics and conscience was articulated and shaped by confessors as counsellors to monarchs throughout the seventeenth century. Against the backdrop of the momentous intellectual, theological, and political shifts during this period, it examines comparatively how ethical challenges of political action were confronted in Spain and France and how questions of conscience became a major argument in the hegemonic struggle between these competing Catholic powers. Counsel of conscience was not a peripheral feature of early modern political culture but fundamental for the definition of politics and conscience. Tracing the rise and fall of confessors as counsellors reveals the parallel transformation of both, getting closer to a historical understanding of the modernization of politics with the idea of an individual conscience at its heart. Placed at the junction of norms and practices, royal confessors shaped the ways in which the royal conscience was identified and scrutinized. By the same token, their expertise and activities remained a source of anxiety and conflict that triggered wide debate on the relationship between State and Church and religion and politics. The notion of counsel of conscience, of which this book provides the first in-depth analysis, challenges fundamental historical paradigms such as the emergence of absolutism, individualization, and the division of public and private. Putting theological concepts and religious dimensions back into political theory and practice sheds new light not only on the importance of counselling for early modern statecraft but also on the reconfiguration of normative frameworks underlying it."

"ABSTRAK
Pasca terjadinya serangan 9/11, angka serangan teror yang berasal dari kelompok
teroris transnasional mengalami peningkatan.

been significantly increasing. According to The Europol’s data from 2006 to 2012,
United Kingdom, Spain and France encountered more dominant terror attacks
compared to other countries including those in European Union . However, the data
shows that, UK had the lowest number of terror attack from three countries. This
thesis compares the efforts of UK, Spain and France in tackling the threat of terrorism
using deterrence strategy framework. Data concerning counter terrorism in three
countries was analyzed using qualitative method with three elements of deterrence
strategy namely deterrence by punishment, deterrence by denial, and deterrence by
incentive. Based on the result of the research, UK’s success due to its government’s
capability to combining hard and soft approach and as well as to increase society’s
active participation in implementing counter terrorism’s policy. Moreover, UK’s
success was also supported by immigration control mechanism that was fully handled
by British Goverment."

"The aim of this book is to provide a new insight on Neanderthal behaviour using the data recovered in level J of Romaní rockshelter (north-eastern Spain). Due to the sedimentary dynamics that formed the Romaní deposit, the occupation layers are characterized by a high temporal resolution, which makes it easier to interprete the archaeological data in behavioural terms. In addition, the different analytical domains (geoarchaeology, lithic technology, zooarchaeology, taphonomy, anthracology, palaeontology) are addressed from a spatial perspective that is basic to understand human behaviour, but also to evaluate the behavioural inferences in the framework of the archaeological formation processes."

"This book demonstrates that ordinary, often illiterate colonial subjects of the Spanish empire were among the Enlightenments most adept practitioners. Broadly situated within postcolonial debates about the Enlightenment and modernity, it employs approaches from comparative social science, intellectual history, and legal history to demonstrate that, at end of the 1700s, colonial Spanish Americans began to sue one another with a zeal unseen on the peninsula. Part I examines how and how many lawsuits were generated in the empire. It analyzes civil litigation rates in six areas of Mexico, Peru, and Spain, including Mexico City, Oaxaca, Lima, Trujillo, Peru, the Montes de Toledo, Spain, and the peninsular high court of Valladolid. With chapters on the process of suing, and on the intellectual transformations and absolutist royal policy reforms on law and its practice, it explores legal culture in diverse capital cities and rural districts. Part II zeroes in on three types of civil cases that increased even more rapidly than the general rise of civil suits. The cases that colonial women, Indian commoners, and slaves initiated against masters, native leaders, and husbands challenged an older model of justice aimed at extralegal outcomes and casuistic jurisprudence. As they produced new ideas about freedom, natural rights, history, and merit in court, these subordinate litigants ultimately created an Enlightened law-centered culture. The conclusion considers why Spain and its colonies have remained marginal to the story of the advent of the modern."

"This book presents a study of the later years of the reign of Philip IV from the perspective of his favourite (valido), don Luis Mendez de Haro, and of the other ministers who played a role in the government of the Spanish Habsburg Monarchy. It offers a positive vision of a period that is often seen as one of failure and decline. Unlike his predecessors, Haro exercised the favour that he enjoyed in a discreet way, acting as a perfect courtier, and honest broker between the king and his aristocratic subjects. Nevertheless, there was still a major problem, because the rulers delegation of his authority to a single nobleman was considered by many to have been incompatible with good kingship, and Philip IV was himself very uneasy about failing in his responsibilities. Haro was thus in a highly insecure situation, and sought to justify his regime by acting as the manager of a prestigious and expensive foreign policy. In this context, the eventual realization of an honourable peace with France in 1659 is shown to have been as much the result of the independent actions of other ministers, like the counts of Penaranda and Fuensaldana, as it was of a royal favourite who had been very reluctantly brought to the negotiating table at the Pyrenees. In the concluding chapters the quite sudden collapse of Spanish European hegemony after Haros death in 1661 is represented as a delayed reaction to the repercussions of a flawed system of government."

"These lectures aim to help readers understand the logics and nature of the main indicators of inequality and poverty, with special attention to their social welfare underpinnings. The key approach consists in linking inequality and poverty measurement with welfare evaluation. As concern for inequality and poverty stems from ethical considerations, the measurement of those aspects necessarily involves some value judgments. Those value judgments can be linked, directly or indirectly, to welfare assessments on the distribution of personal and social opportunities. Inequality and poverty are thus considered to be partial aspects of the welfare evaluation of the opportunities in a given society. The volume includes two applications that illustrate how the models can be implemented. They refer to inequality of opportunity and poverty in education, using PISA data."
