ABSTRACT Revolution changes the fundamental values in the society. As the fundamental values change, the society also changes, and things that were used to be agreeable before the revolution may become less appealing, or no longer accepted. This new value formed a new taste and necessity in the society. As a result, the process of designing will be influenced by this newfound value. This writing does not discuss the revolution of Indonesian Independence. It discusses how the social, economy and political context and issues in the Dutch East Indies formed a revolution within the colonial society during the late colonial era. It starts with the analysis of revolutions throughout Europe & Russia, then continues to analyze changes in the Architectural Styles in Europe after the revolutions. However, the European and Russian society were essentially different than the Dutch East Indies society, which was, a colonial society. Therefore, I analyze the context of the Dutch East Indies society and how the revolution was formed. The discussion subsequently analyzes the changes in the Indies Architecture to further emphasize an effort to represent the new ideas that formed after the revolution into a concrete form, which is architecture.

The city of Cirebon was not as large as Batavia (Jakarta) or Semarang, but its location on the northern shore of Java made it an important harbour city from which the inland regions of the southern part of West Java could be serviced. As a harbour town, Cirebon became the regional centre of trade and commerce, and many Chinese immigrants settled there. As were other cities, Cirebon fell under the governance of the VOC and later of the Netherlands Indies administration A Chinese officer was appointed to deal with Chinese community issues in the region. With the exception of the well-known Major (Majoor der Chinezen) Tan Tjin Kie, whose funeral is described in his sons book, little is known about the other Chinese officers in Cirebon. Most publications concentrate on the Chinese officers in Batavia or Semarang or in other large cities. Numerous Chinese officers were appointed in Cirebon and in the surrounding regions. Many of them were members of four or five big families. This article describes their lives, families, and descendants, their businesses, and their whereabouts.;ABSTRAK

......Colonial Bandung was known as the Paris of Java (Parijs van Java). It gives an impression of aesthetic and is adored by the people until present day. The Dutch named Bandung as Een Western Enclave or an exclusive neighborhood for the European. This research focused on the development of the city in the early twentieth century, from a small town near the plantation to a modern city that is globally known, even to be prepared as a capital city of Dutch East Indies. The development also changed the visual of architecture and the city. However, behind the rapid development of the city, there are some ideas in aesthetics that was unrelated. This research tried to answer what is the image of aesthetics that was appeared in Bandung as the future capital city of Dutch East Indies. I learn it through the Aesthetic theory of Immanuel Kant and Metropolis of Georg Simmel. With the method that is introduced by Iain Borden and friends in the book The Unknown City, I found some views that is related to the aesthetic and the city, such as nature beauty, the urban planning and design principle, ambition to the tecnology and innovation, exoticism, imagination of the ideal tropics, as well as fears that threatened colonial imagination.

......Architectural space is a medium of life that is constantly changing and has subjective meaning and value, depending on who is discussing it. Its dynamic nature is a provision for the potential progress of proper social life and civilization. Historical narratives historically show a causal relationship from decision making in the past to the existence of the city today. The post-colonial freedoms have encouraged people to rebuild the country according to its true values and identity. Thus, the focus of the issue in this thesis refers to the postcolonial paradigm and its relation to the process of spatial development, which also underlies the identity of people in former colonial cities such as Jakarta. By combining history with architecture and socio-cultural studies, criticism and understanding will emerge from the author as an individual who is experiencing a civilizational
