Nominated by Tsinghua University as an outstanding Ph.D. thesis, this book investigates the mechanical properties of unsaturated compacted clayey soil, the multi-field coupling consolidation theory of unsaturated soil and its application to a 261.5 m high earth-rockfill dam. It proposes a multi-field coupling analysis method of consolidation, and develops an efficient and practical finite element (FE) program for large-scale complex earth-rockfill dams. The book is primarily intended for researchers studying the multi-field coupling analysis of seepage consolidation.

NN field is located onshore within the Malacca Strait Block. The field was discovered in 1990 by drilling N 01 exploration well which proven oil in the Manggala and Pematang Formations. In 1998, 3D Seismic was acquired and successfully identified three compartments in this field which separated by N S faults. This study is focusing on Lower Pematang Formation which belongs to Pematang Group and deposited in braided fluvial system. The Lower Pematang reservoir is tight sandstone with blocky log type model. In order to optimize the oil production, hydraulic fracturing stimulation was chosen and became proven technique in this reservoir. Further geomechanic study is required to support hydraulic fracturing jobs by providing a 3D model of pore pressure and fracture pressure. Several geo mechanics rock properties such as Pore pressure, Poisson's ratio and Young's Modulus, Fracture Pressure was calculated in wells and then propagate troughout NN fields. With 3D model, a robust recommendation on field development via hydraulic fracturing can be achieved and oil recovery will optimum.

The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between the traditional Geomechanics and Numerical Geotechnical Modelling with applications in science and practice. Geomechanics is rarely taught within the rigorous context of Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics, while when it comes to Numerical Modelling, commercially available finite elements or finite differences software utilize constitutive relationships within the rigorous framework. As a result, young scientists and engineers have to learn the challenging subject of constitutive modelling from a program manual and often end up with using unrealistic models which violate the Laws of Thermodynamics. The book is introductory, by no means does it claim any completeness and state of the art in such a dynamically developing field as numerical and constitutive modelling of soils. The author gives basic understanding of conventional continuum mechanics approaches to constitutive modelling, which can serve as a foundation for exploring more advanced theories. A considerable effort has been invested here into the clarity and brevity of the presentation. A special feature of this book is in exploring thermomechanical consistency of all presented constitutive models in a simple and systematic manner.

This book presents contributions to a workshop dedicated to Prof. Gerd Gudehus on the occasion of his 80th birthday and held in Vienna, Austria, on 14-16 August 2018. The articles gathered here, many of which were written by former students, friends and colleagues of Prof. Gudehus, cover diverse topics that reflect the breadth and depth of geomechanics research. Consequently, they offer a valuable source of ideas and inspiration on areas ranging from sophisticated constitutive models to advanced numerical methods, from particles to continua, and from fractals of geomaterials to the design of offshore wind turbine foundations.

This book presents the development of optimization platform for geotechnical engineering which is one of the key components in smart geotechnics. The book discusses the fundamentals of the optimization algorithm with constitutive models of soils. Helping readers easily understand the optimization algorithm applied in geotechnical engineering, this book first introduces the methodology of the optimization-based parameter identification, and then elaborates the principle of three newly developed efficient optimization algorithms, followed by the ideas of a variety of laboratory tests and formulations of constitutive models. Moving on to the application of optimization methods in geotechnical engineering, this book presents an optimization-based parameter identification platform with a practical and concise interface based on the above theories. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate-level teaching in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering and other related engineering specialties. It is also of use to industry practitioners, due to the inclusion of real-world applications, opening the door to advanced courses on both modeling and algorithm development within the industrial engineering and operations research fields.

This book presents recent research into developing and applying computational tools to estimate the performance and safety of hydraulic structures from the planning and construction stage to the service period. Based on the results of a close collaboration between the author and his colleagues, friends, students and field engineers, it shows how to achieve a good correlation between numerical computation and the actual in situ behavior of hydraulic structures. The book’s heuristic and visualized style disseminates the philosophy and road map as well as the findings of the research. The chapters reflect the various aspects of the three typical and practical methods (the finite element method, the block element method, the composite element method) that the author has been working on and made essential contributions to since the 1980s. This book is an advanced continuation of Hydraulic Structures by the same author, published by Springer in 2015.
