Metaphor is a linguistic phenomenon in semantics studies that brings the concept of an experience into another experience in forming a meaning. Metaphors can be used both in spoken and written language practice, furthermore in the writing of a news article. One of the news categories that people are interested in is sports news. Formula 1 as one of the world's leading racing sports competitions is interesting to follow, as well as its news updates. This study then discusses how journalists use metaphors in terms of Formula 1 racing news articles. The data used in this research are Formula 1 news articles written in Dutch sourced from RN365 (www.racingnews365.nl). The data were analyzed based on the conceptual metaphors theory of Lakoff and Johnson (2003), using qualitative research approaches and descriptive methods. In this research, the use of structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors was found. Research also shows the dominant use of structural metaphors. The three types of metaphors have different functions, each of which plays a role in providing information about Formula 1. Based on the results of this research, metaphors were used in the writing of Formula 1 news articles to provide variations in vocabulary and provide a clearer picture of the world of Formula 1.
