ABSTRAKMeskipun sejak tahun 1973 status homoseksualitas tidak lagi dianggap sebagai ketidakwarasan, kehadiran masyarakat homofobia masih tak terhindarkan sampai saat ini. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat apa yang sebenarnya terjadi di dunia queer setelah adanya gay rights movements. Menerapkan teori Hall mengenai identitas budaya dan teori Butler mengenai performativitas, melalui film An Englishman in New York (2009), makalah ini menunjukkan bahwa queer diaspora menciptakan identitas baru bagi penduduk asli dan imigran. Karya ini juga memperlihatkan bahwa sesungguhnya alasan mengapa queer pada era 1970 suka menunjukkan identitas gender mereka dengan queer fashion adalah karena tekanan dari masyarakat homofobi.

This study, then, aims to see what was actually happening in queer worlds after gay rights movements. Applying Hall?s cultural identity and Butler?s performativity theories through the movie An Englishman in New York (2009), this paper shows that queer diaspora creates new identities for both the indigenous people and the immigrants. This piece also reveals that the reason why 1970s queers liked to show their gender identities with queer fashion was because of the pressure from homophobic society., Although since 1973 the status of homosexuality is no longer considered as insanity, the presence of homophobic society is still inevitable until now. "YouTube, sebagai media digital, dapat menjadi alat untuk mengonstruksi dan merepresentasikan identitas sosial. Dapat diakses oleh audiens dari seluruh dunia, YouTube juga membuat batasan antara dunia Barat dan Timur semakin semu, memberi jalan bagi orang-orang dari kedua budaya tersebut untuk berbagi pengaruh kepada audiens mereka. Dalam video YouTube mereka, Korean Englishman mengonstruksi dan merepresentasikan budaya Korea, dimana hal ini menunjukkan adanya narasi pasca-kolonial yaitu orang Barat bernarasi tentang orang Timur. Melalui Model Diskursif dari Pendekatan Konstruksionis dalam Teori Representasi oleh Stuart Hall serta perspektif pasca-kolonial dalam Teori Orientalisme, makalah ini menganalisis bahwa meskipun Korean Englishman bertujuan memperkenalkan budaya Korea kepada orang Inggris dan dunia, terdapat jejak-jejak pandangan Orientalisme dalam representasi mereka terhadap budaya Korea yang terlihat dalam 2 video yang akan dianalisis dalam makalah ini. Dalam mengidentifikasi tanda-tanda Orientalisme, analisis tekstual akan digunakan sebagai metode. Makalah ini menemukan bahwa perspektif Orientalisme seperti pembedaan, stereotip, dan eksotisisasi budaya Timur ditemukan dalam representasi budaya Korea oleh orang Inggris yang juga menyebabkan normalisasi perspektif Orientalisme yang dapat dilihat melalui penggunaan bahasa dan nada percakapan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa perilaku pasca-kolonial masih terjadi di zaman digital, meskipun disampaikan melalui sarana yang berbeda dan cara yang lebih halus.
YouTube, as a digital medium, can be used as a tool to construct and represent social identities. Having the ability to reach a worldwide audience, YouTube also makes the barrier between the West and the East more subtle, paving the way for people embodying both cultures to share and create influence towards their audience. In their YouTube videos, Korean Englishman construct and represent Korean culture, which reflects a postcolonial narration of the West narrating the East. Through the Discursive Model of the Constructionist Approach of Representation by Stuart Hall and the postcolonial perspective of Orientalism, the paper attempts to analyze how although Korean Englishman aimed to capture and introduce Korean culture to British people and the world, there are traces of Orientalist views in their representation of Korean culture which are shown in 2 of their videos that are analyzed in this paper. In identifying the signs of Orientalism, the analysis will use textual analysis as a method. The article discovers that orientalist values such as otherness, stereotyping, and exoticization of the East are found in the representation of Korean culture by the British which perpetuates the normalization of orientalist views impacted by the language use and tone of the conversations. This reveals how postcolonial events are still prevalent in the digital era, although displayed in different mediums and delivered in a more indirect manner."
