This manual is a user-friendly, comprehensive description of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) model of autism treatment, the latest scientific information on what truly works in treating autism in an integrated, organized, consumable format. The book details effective early behavioral intervention, covering topics such as challenging behavior, visual modification, parental involvement, improving language, cognition, and social skills, and ends with a section that explains how all of the treatments can be put together in real-life service provision organizations. The CARD model is highly comprehensive and provides useful clinical information to form cutting-edge treatment programs.

Abstrak :
This book examines current and emerging techniques for the dynamic and evolving field of autism assessment. It provides a detailed, research-based discussion of the latest innovations in assessment from a practical perspective accumulated from decades of autism assessment and treatment training and experience in both educational and clinical settings. The book provides personal insights into the engaging and intriguing autism population and case studies of children who have captured the hearts and minds of clinicians nationwide. As the rates of autism have grown more than 10-fold during the past decade, researchers have questioned whether unclear diagnostic guidelines may be to blame for the high numbers of recently diagnosed children. Rather, the authors argue, tighter agreed upon methods for diagnosis of autism have allowed for more accurate identification of children who indeed require supportive treatments and therapies. This unique volume provides readers with clarity about best-practice assessment approaches from sequential and pragmatic perspectives as well as an understanding of critical issues and hurdles in ascertaining the appropriate diagnosis. In addition, myriad potential comorbid conditions or differential diagnoses are addressed. This book is a must-have resource for clinicians and practitioners as well as researchers and graduate students in the fields of child and school psychology, behavioral therapy, social work, psychiatry, pediatrics, forensic psychology, and educational and healthcare policy"--Publisher's description.

Seroussi, Karyn
Abstrak :
When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfacing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to abnormal brain development. So Karyn and her husband got to work -- Karyn implementing their program at home while her husband tested his theories at the scientific lab where he worked. Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is an inspiring and suspenseful chronicle of how one couple empowered themselves to challenge the medical establishment that promised no hope -- and found a cure for their child. Here are the explanations and treatments they so carefully researched and discovered, a wealth of crucial tools and hands-on information that can help other parents reverse the effects of autism and PDD, including step-by-step instructions for the removal of dairy and gluten from the diet, special recipes, and an explanation of the roles of the key players in autism research.

......Experiences of parents with DlR(M) program was obtained by interviewing families with children on the Autism Spectrum (AS) who have been with the DIR(M) program. Analysis showed that the program was suitable for families who were in agreement about doing the program and were able to allocate their time to do the home programs. Applying the Floorrime which is an important part of the DIR approach was reported as the most difficult part ofthe program. Behavior changes showed by children in the study were: improvements in attention and eye contacts, wanner attachment with their caregivers, and initiating social interactions. All parents expressed their happiness about changes in their children’s behavior. They also said that their relations with their AS child became more intimate, they could understand their children better and caring for them became more enjoyable. The interviews revealed some needs which had not been met by the DIR(M) program. These are: routinely repeated explanations ofthe DIR theories and the home program, also routine home visits by someone from the DIR(M) team. DIR theories and practices should be spread out to other professionals who work with children and families to improve servicw for families who want to take the DIR(M) program.
