Abstrak :
Penelitian ini secara eksklusif membahas film Hollywood coming-of-age berjudul The Half of It (2020) yang menampilkan seorang lesbian Asia-Amerika sebagai pemeran utama. Film The Half of It (2020) dipilih sebagai korpus penelitian untuk menambah perspektif lain dalam pembahasan narasi coming-of-age di media Barat yang tokoh utamanya termarginalkan di lingkungannya. Topik penelitian ini adalah bagaimana karakter utama dalam film The Half of It (2020) mengatasi kesengsaraan sebagai anggota kelompok minoritas tertentu yang menimbulkan dampak pada perjalanan coming-of-age atau kedewasaannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana marginalisasi ganda yang karakter alami dan cara ia mengatasi segala kesulitan yang menyertainya mempengaruhi narasi coming-of-age dalam film ini. Melalui metode analisis tekstual, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa film The Half of It (2020) menawarkan pandangan berbeda atas narasi coming-of-age, yang dipengaruhi oleh status sosial karakter sebagai lesbian Asia-Amerika dan bagaimana dia menegosiasikan posisinya dalam situasi hidupnya, yang mana membedakan kisah ini dari yang ditampilkan dalam narasi coming-of-age di media Barat. ......This study exclusively discusses a Hollywood coming-of-age movie titled The Half of It (2020) that features a lesbian Asian American as the lead character. The Half of It (2020) is chosen as the corpus of the study to add another perspective on the discussion of coming-of-age narrative in Western media whose lead character is doubly marginalized in her environment. The topic of this study is how the lead character in The Half of It (2020) overcomes the tribulations of being a member of certain minority groups that impacts her coming-of-age journey. This study aims to determine how the character’s double marginalization and how she overcomes the struggles that come with it affect the coming-of-age narrative in the movie. Using textual analysis as a method, this study concludes that the movie The Half of It (2020) offers a distinguished take on a coming-of-age story that is affected by the character’s social status as a lesbian Asian American and how she negotiates her position in her conditions, which distinguishes this story from what has been shown in coming-of-age narratives in Western media.

Artikel ini menganalisis normativitas ras kulit hitam dalam musik rap dan bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap MC Asia Amerika dan Amerika kulit putih di Rap Battle (khususnya Jin the MC, Dumbfoundead, dan Eminem), nilai rap battle dalam kaitannya antara ras dan rap, dan bagaimana hubungan rap battle dengan ras dan rap berkontribusi pada faktor keberhasilan Jin The MC, Dumbfoundead, dan Eminem saat mereka menangani serangan rasisme dari lawan rap battle mereka. Korpus penelitian ini adalah film dokumenter tentang perjuangan Asia-Amerika di industri hip-hop berjudul Bad Rap (2016) serta film otobiografi Eminem, 8 Mile (2002). Studi ini menggunakan prinsip De La Garza and Ono's Critical Race Theory (2016) dan Edgar and Sedwick's New Criticism (1999) untuk menemukan pentingnya Rap Battle dalam hubungan antara ras dan rap serta bagaimana musik yang berasal dari seniman kulit hitam mempengaruhi ras non-kulit hitam MC tersebut; khususnya dalam karakteristik penampilan mereka sendiri, strategi untuk melawan serangan rasisme dari lawan, serta pengakuan dan pengembangan karir mereka di industri. Setelah itu, peneliti membahas kesenjangan dalam aspek rasial dan sosiokultural dari normativitas kulit hitam dalam rap dan bagaimana hal itu berkontribusi pada 'faktor keberhasilan' artis yang disebutkan ini sementara serangan rasisme memainkan peran kuat dari lawan ras kulit hitam Amerika. ......This article analyze the normativity of black race in rap music and how it affected Asian American and White American MCs in Rap Battle (specifically Jin the MC, Dumbfoundead, and Eminem), the importance of rap battle in connection between race and rap, and how rap battle’s connection with race and rap contributed to Jin the MC, Dumbfoundead, and Eminem’s success factors as they tackled racist attacks from their rap battle opponents. The corpus of the study is a documentary about Asian American’s struggle in the hip-hop industry called Bad Rap (2016) as well as Eminem’s revised-autobiography film 8 Mile (2002). The study uses De La Garza and Ono’s Critical Race Theory (2016) tenets and Edgar and Sedwick’s New Criticism (1999) to discover the importance of Rap Battle in connection between race and rap as well as the ways that black-originated music affected the nonblack MCs mentioned; specifically in their own performance characteristics, strategies to battle racist attacks from the opponents, as well as their recognition and career development in the industry. Following that, the researcher discussed a gap within racial and sociocultural aspects of black normativity in rap and how it contributed to the ‘success factors’ of these mentioned artists whilst racist attacks played a strong role from Black American opponents.

Untuk kembali mempermasalahkan ras, representasi ras dalam serial televisi Amerika telah mengalami perkembangan. Dalam kaitannya dengan hal tersebut, artikel ini membahas tentang salah satu serial komedi Disney, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody 2005-2007 yang menggambarkan keberagaman ras dalam kehidupan multikultural Amerika dan menyajikan gambaran kompleks kaum minoritas melalui karakternya. Dengan melakukan analisis karakter terhadap London Tipton menggunakan konsep colorblind racism dan buddy formula, artikel ini bertujuan membahas kompleksitas dan implikasi dari representasi colorblind. Dalam artikel ini ditemukan bahwa representasi colorblind pada perempuan Asia-Amerika tidak mengurangi masalah, dan berindikasi pada rasisme juga memelihara keistimewaan ras kulit putih.

ABSTRACT
In an attempt to re problematize racial issues, many American television series have evolved in terms of their racial representation. This includes Disney Channel rsquo;s early 2000s sitcom The Suite Life of Zack and Cody 2005-2007 which projects racial diversity in the discourse of American multiculturalism. The series provides a complex and problematic portrayal of the racial minority groups through some of the characters, including the Asian-American female main character, London Tipton. By conducting a textual analysis and focusing on character analysis of London Tipton using Bonilla-Silva rsquo;s framework of colorblind racism and Artz rsquo;s interracial buddy formula, this article aims to examine the complexity and the implications of the colorblind representation of an Asian-American female in a television series. Research findings reveal that rather than reducing the problematic portrayal of Asian or Asian-American females, the colorblind representation through London Tipton rsquo;s characterization reveals the subtle racism towards them as well as the preservation of white superiority and hegemony.

Di media, tokoh pria Asia-Amerika sering digambarkan dengan berbagai macam stereotipe. Mereka biasanya digambarkan sebagai orang yang pendek, tidak menarik, dan penurut. Namun, di era ini, terdapat beberapa perubahan dalam penggambaran tokoh pria Asia-Amerika. Melalui pembahasan terhadap dua serial televisi, Two Broke Girls 2011 dan Young Hungry 2014 , makalah ini menyoroti perbedaan-perbedaan dalam penggambaran tokoh pria Asia-Amerika. Dengan menggunakan teori representasi oleh Stuart Hall 2013 dan juga teori maskulinitas oleh Raewyn Connell 1995 , makalah ini berfokus pada analisa perbedaan masing-masing karakter melalui penampilan fisik mereka, pengetahuan mereka tentang budaya Amerika, interaksi mereka dengan karakter-karakter lainnya, serta bagaimana nilai-nilai maskulinitas tradisional dikebiri dalam karakter mereka. Dengan menganalisis semua aspek ini, penelitian ini akan menyoroti bagaimana karakter-karakter pria Asia-Amerika dari masing-masing serial televisi menggambarkan stereotipe tersebut. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa kedua karakter, Han Lee dan Elliot Park, sama-sama tidak dilukiskan sebagai karakter yang memiliki sifat maskulin tradisional, tetapi dengan cara yang berbeda. Elliot Park, dari Young Hungry, dilukiskan sebagai seorang gay. In the media, Asian American men have been portrayed with many different stereotypes. They are usually depicted as short, not attractive, and submissive. However, in this era, there are some changes in the portrayal of Asian Americans. Examining two television series, titled Two Broke Girls 2011 and Young Hungry 2014 , this paper spotlights the differences in the depiction of Asian American men. Using Stuart Hall rsquo;s 2013 theory of representation and also Raewyn Connell rsquo;s 1995 theory of masculinities, this paper will focus on analysing the differences of each character through their physical appearances, their knowledge about American culture, their interaction with other characters, and how they are being emasculated. By analysing all these aspects, this writing highlight how Asian American male characters from each television series portray the stereotype. The result shows that the two characters, Han Lee and Elliot Park, are being emasculated, but in a different way. Elliot Park, from Young Hungry, is being emasculated by being a gay. Whereas, Han Lee, from Two Broke Girls is being emasculated because he tries so hard to blend in and to be accepted by the other characters.

Film merupakan sebuah produk budaya yang mewarisi nilai-nilai dan makna dari realitas hidup. Di antara banyak film yang diproduksi oleh industri film Hollywood, ada beberapa film yang dibuat untuk menggambarkan budaya dan nilai orang-orang Asia. Crazy Rich Asians (2018), disutradai dan ditulis oleh orang Amerika keturunan Asia, adalah salah satu dari film yang memiliki tujuan tersebut. Film tersebut, yang membuat kesuksesan box office, melibatkan sebagian besar pemeran orang Asia, dan banyak penelitian telah dilakukan tentang penggmbaran karakter wanita dalam film tersebut dan masalah dikotomi pada nilai Timur-Barat. Studi kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana tokoh laki-laki direpresentasikan dalam film, hubungannya dengan kenyataan, dan ideologi dibalik representasi tersebut berdasarkan teori Semiotik dari John Fiske yang berjudul `The Codes of Television`. Tulisan ini juga mengkaji bagaimana orientalisme menjadi salah satu ideologi utama yang tersirat dalam film tersebut. Studi tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa representasi tokoh laki-laki Asia dalam film ini telah bergeser dari stereotipe orang Asia pada zaman dahulu, namun masih tergambar secara parsial melalui sudut pandang Barat.

A film is a cultural product that inherits values and meanings from the reality of life. Among many films produced by the Hollywood film industry, there are a number of films that are made to portray Asian`s culture and values. Crazy Rich Asians (2018), directed and written by Asian Americans, is one of the films that serves the purpose. The film, which made a box office success, involved largely Asian casts, and many studies have been conducted on the portrayal of the female characters in the film and the issue of East-West values dichotomy. This qualitative study aims to further discuss the male characters in the film, which is still lacking. It aims to provide insights on how the male characters are represented in the film, its relation to the reality, and the ideology behind the representation based on a semiotic theory called `The Codes of Television` by John Fiske. It also examines how the orientalism becomes one of the major ideologies implied in the film. The study reveals that the representation of Asian male characters in this film have shifted from the old Asians` stereotypes, yet it is still partially portrayed through the Western`s point of view.
