Abstrak :
Over the last few decades, advances by African-Americans in the business world have been both impressive and well-documented. But even a cursory glance at the statistics -- not to mention a look around most corporations -- reveals that, despite much progress, minority executives are still relatively few and far between. Whether in the form of insensitivity, change-averse corporate cultures, socio-economic factors, or outright racism, African-Americans still face very real obstacles along the path to professional success. To many, these obstacles have seemed insurmountable, and their careers have foundered. But to thousands of others, these challenges have been an invitation to excel, and their accomplishments have been worthy of both praise and emulation.

Abstrak :
This paper aim to explain and highlight the long history of African-American culture with correlation to communication storytelling theory. The objective of this paper is to raise people's awareness of black culture and the ways that people of colour tell their stories and call for equality for their people through music, films, fashion, and sports. Using Storytelling Theory and content analysis as a method to analyse seven components of African- American culture that is prominent in the United States. Given the limited options that regular citizens have and the significance of storytelling for the marginalised community, culture is one of the easily accessible means for everyone to share their stories and fight discrimination. Currently, there are a lot of subliminal messages in popular culture and art that serve as activism so that everyone can take part in the fight. ......Karya tulis ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan dan menyoroti sejarah panjang budaya Afrika-Amerika dengan korelasinya dengan teori komunikasi bercerita. Tujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat akan budaya hitam dan cara orang kulit berwarna menceritakan kisah mereka dan menyerukan kesetaraan bagi rakyat mereka melalui musik, film, mode, dan olahraga. Menggunakan Teori Bercerita dan analisis isi sebagai metode untuk menganalisis tujuh komponen budaya Afrika-Amerika yang menonjol di Amerika Serikat. Mengingat pilihan terbatas yang dimiliki warga biasa dan pentingnya mendongeng bagi komunitas yang terpinggirkan, budaya adalah salah satu cara yang mudah diakses bagi setiap orang untuk berbagi cerita dan melawan diskriminasi. Saat ini banyak sekali pesan-pesan subliminal dalam budaya dan seni populer yang dijadikan sebagai aktivisme agar semua orang bisa ambil bagian dalam perjuangan.

[Same-sex attracted, and non-gender conforming African-Americans are substantial in number, yet underrepresented in the social and behavioral science literature. This volume addresses the issues of African-American LGBT psychology as a case of indigenous psychology. The authors present the research of scholars who are developing theory, practice, and services that are couched within the specific cultural complexities of this population. Tesis ini membahas mengenai terjadinya perubahan pergerakan kelompok etnis Afro-Amerika post-racial dalam menyikapi isu ketidaksetaraan ras terhadap kulit hitam melalui kemunculan gerakan Black Lives Matter. Post-racial dalam penelitian ini mengacu pada mitos dan kerangka pemikiran masalah ras yang muncul setelah terpilihnya Barack Obama sebagai Presiden Amerika Serikat. Dengan menggunakan metode historis dan pendekatan sosiologis, penelitian kualitiatif ini terfokus pada perkembangan gerakan Black Lives Matter sejak dibentuk pada tahun 2013 sampai tahun 2015, yang melakukan kampanye penggunaan hashtag “black lives matter” melalui dunia maya. Dengan mengkontekstualisasikan gerakan Black Lives Matter pada sejarah perjuangan pergerakan kaum Afro-Amerika, penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya pandangan dan tindakan Black Lives Matter yang bersifat lebih inklusif; yaitu pergerakan ini memiliki hubungan intersectionality dengan gerakan kulit hitam lainnya, yaitu gerakan feminis dan gerakan LGBT. ABSTRACT
This thesis discusses the shifts in post-racial’s African-American movement, focusing on racial inequality experienced by Black people and the emergence of Black Lives Matter movement. “Post-racial” in this research refers to the myth and racial framework that emerges after the election of Barack Obama as the president of USA. Using historical methods and sociological approaches, this qualitative research focuses on the development of Black Lives Matter movement since its formation in 2013 to 2015 campaigning of “black lives matter” hashtag through cyberspace. Contextualizing Black Lives Matter movement within the history of African-American civil rights struggle, the thesis indicates that the view and attitudes of Black Lives Matter is more inclusive; evidences show that the movement includes intersectionality of other Black movements, such as Black feminist and Black LGBT. Such inclusion also shows that Black Lives Matter become one of the new African-American movement that open the boundaries and represent minority groups that are historically neglected;

ABSTRACT
This undergraduate thesis focuses on Atlanta, a television developed by Donald Glover. Through the mix of contextual and textual analysis, this research explores how Atlanta constructs the experience of being African American men in contemporary period. This research finds that the experience of being African American men is explored through its use of form, scaling of bodies existing in the show, and the way stuckedness is depicted through its main character.First, in its use of form, the show depicts the marginalization of African American men as something visceral, by evoking a sense of uneasiness. Second, the show constructs the mobility and immobility of African American men by relating it to scaling of bodies, in which the ideal mobility of African American men is perceived as having more money, power, and worth, something that according to the society hierarchy is associated with being white man. Third, the show depicts stuckedness that is experienced by two major characters in two ways as something that is not merely pathological, but also as a self govermentality.By examining the workings of this show, this research hopes to bring to light the way fictional works offer a depiction of being African American men that examines the feeling of being marginalized while not limiting them to be a victim with no agency.

Skripsi ini berfokus pada Atlanta, acara televisi yang dibuat oleh Donald Glover. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan campuran antara kontekstual dan tekstual, skripsi ini menganalisis bagaimana Atlanta mengonstruksi pengalaman sebagai laki-laki Afrika-Amerika pada periode kontemporer. Hasil analisis skripsi menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman ini dieksplorasi dengan penggunaan form atau bentuk, berdasarkan scaling of bodies yang ada, dan bagaimana konsep stuckedness atau lsquo;terjebak rsquo; digambarkan dalam karakter utamanya.Pertama, dalam caranya menggunakan form atau bentuk, acara ini menggambarkan marginalisasi atas kaum laki-laki Afrika-Amerika sebagai sesuatu yang dirasakan secara mendalam dengan membangkitkan suasana tidak nyaman. Konstruksi identitas Meghan Markle sebagai seorang wanita birasial dapat digambarkan melalui pemberitaan pernikahan Kerajaan Inggris pada tahun 2018 di berbagai media Inggris dan Amerika Serikat. Keluarga Kerajaan Inggris dan juga pernikahannya selalu menjadi pusat perhatian dunia, misalnya kehadiran Lady Diana dan Kate Middleton yang menikah dengan Pangeran Charles dan Pangeran William dalam keluarga Kerajaan Inggris. Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana pemberitaan tersebut mencerminkan ambivalensi pemberitaan Meghan Markle dalam artikel media online sebagai perubahan yang dapat “memodernisasi” keluarga Kerajaan Inggris yang sebagian besar adalah orang berkulit putih. Penelitian ini juga berfokus pada bagaimana pemberitaan media tentang Meghan Markle cenderung menekankan pada identitas rasial dan latar belakang keluarganya. Teori rasisme modern dari Caliendo dan McIlwain (2015), dan pendekatan analisis wacana dari Brian Paltridge (2006) berfungsi sebagai kerangka kerja dalam penelitian ini. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa beberapa media masih memiliki kecenderungan untuk bersikap rasis terhadap orang birasial yang memiliki keturunan campuran Afrika seperti Meghan. Selain itu, ada ambivalensi di media mengenai kehadiran Meghan. Di satu sisi Meghan dianggap dapat menghadirkan citra baru dalam keluarga Kerajaan Inggris, namun di sisi lain, identitas Meghan sebagai seorang wanita birasial dianggap tidak membawa dampak besar terhadap representasi orang birasial di media. ......The construction of Meghan Markle’s identity as a biracial woman can be represented through the reports of the British Royal wedding 2018 in the U.K and U.S media. British Royal family and its wedding have always been the center of world’s attention, for example, the presence of Lady Diana and Kate Middleton in the Royal Family who got married with Prince Charles and Prince William. All the media discussed in this article represent how these reports reflect ambivalence in the ways media report about Meghan Markle in the article as a ‘modernizing’ change in the mostly white British Royal family, and how media reports on Meghan Markle emphasize her racial identity and family background are the focus of this research. The theory of modern racism from Caliendo and McIlwain (2015), and Brian Paltridge’s (2006) critical discourse analysis and framing serve as the framework for this research. The research shows that some of the media still have a tendency to be racist towards biracials who have a mixed African heritage like Meghan. Furthermore, there is ambivalence in the media regarding her presence whether she may present a new image in the British Royal family or she is as a biracial woman who does not necessarily bring major impacts towards how biracial people are represented in the media.

Tulisan ini menganalisis keberadaan stereotipe perempuan Afrika-Amerika di televisi Amerika dalam serial Riverdale 2017 , yang diadaptasi dari komik berjudul ldquo;Archie rdquo;. Serial ini menyajikan tokoh dari berbagai macam ras, namun tulisan ini fokus pada tokoh Josie McCoy, vokalis utama dari band Josie and the Pussycats. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana tokoh Josie and the Pussycats menghadirkan representasi perempuan Afrika-Amerika yang baru di media melalui analsis tekstual dan pendekatan Black Feminism dari Hill Collins

ABSTRACT
The representation of African-American women in media tends to enforce negative stereotypes. This paper analyses the presence of stereotypes of African American women in the American television series Riverdale 2017 , which is adapted from ldquo;Archie Comics rdquo;. The series present a racially diverse cast, but this paper will focus on Josie McCoy, the lead singer of Josie and the Pussycats. This paper aims to examine how Josie and the Pussycats show a different way of portraying African-American women in media by using textual analysis and Black feminism approach by Hill Collins.

Penelitian ini mengkaji kode kultural di musik video `This Land` dan kaitannya dengan sejarah diskriminasi, penindasan, dan kekerasan rasial di Amerika menggunakan teori semiotika Roland Barthes dan representasi Stuart Hall. Menggunakan kedua teori tersebut, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa video musik “This Land” menguak akar settler colonialism dalam ideologi supremasi kulit putih yang melegitimasikan sistem penindasan terhadap orang kulit hitam dan orang kulit berwarna. Dengan demikian, video musik ini merepresentasikan isu rasisme kontemporer sebagai sebuah sistem yang bertahan sepanjang sejarah dan tetap direpresentasikan melalui simbol-simbol. Terakhir, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa `This Land` mendekonstruksi ideologi supremasi kulit putih dan wacana rasisme yang diwakilkan melalui simbol-simbol tersebut.

This study examines the cultural codes linked to the history of racial discrimination, oppression, and violence in America in the music video of `This Land`, by applying Barthes` classification of codes and Hall`s theory of representation. The music video foregrounds American settler colonial roots of white supremacy ideology that legitimizes a system of oppression towards black people and colored people alike. As such, the music video represents racial issue in contemporary America as a system that persists throughout the history, and remains represented through symbols. Lastly, this study finds that “This Land” deconstructs and subverts the ideology of white supremacy and discourse of racism embodied in the symbols.
