"multipotent mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow are expected to be a somatic stem cell source for the development of new cell-based therapy in regenerative medicines. however, dental clinicians are unlikely to carry out autologous cell/tissue collection from patients (i.e. marrow aspiration) as a routine procedure i their clinics; hence, the utilization of bone marrow stem cells seems impractical in the dental field. dental tissues harvested from extracted human teeth are well known to contain highly proliferative and multipotent stem cell compartments and are considered to be an alternative autologous cell source in cell-based medicine. this article provides a short overview of the ongoing studies for the potential application of dental stem cells and suggests the utilization of 2 concepts in future regenerative medicine: (1) dental stem cell-based therapy for hepatic and other systematic disease and (2) tooth replacement therapy using the bio engineered human whole tooth, called the "test-tube dental implant." regenerative therapies will bring new insight and benefits to the fields of clinical medicine and dentistry"

"Age estimation, using forensic odontology, is a crucial step for biological identification. Currently there are many methods available to predict the age of deceased or living persons, each with varying accuracy, such as a physical examination, radiographs of the left hand, and dental assessments. Age estimation, using radiographic tooth development, has been found to be a more accurate method because it is mainly genetically influenced and as such is less likely to be affected by nutritional and environmental factors. The Demirjian et al. method for dental age estimation, using radiological techniques, has long been the most common protocol used in many populations. This method, which is based on tooth developmental changes, is a straightforward process as different stages of tooth development are clearly defined. This article aims to elaborate on the Demirjian et al. method of age estimation using tooth development as a guide. / Phuwadon Duangto, Apirum Janhom, Sukon Prasitwattanaseree, Pasuk Mahakkanukrauh, Anak Iamaroon"

"Complete diagnosis in dentistry needs more detail and accurate quantitative as well as qualitative jawbone trabeculation evaluation. This requires modern diagnostic radiography that in Indonesia are still very limited. One form of the periodontitis that demands more attention and detailed information due to the great efforts to overcome, is Rapidly Progressive Periodontitis, and thus this disease has chosen as a model in this study. The objective of this study to get more detail and accurate radiometric of Direct Digital Intraoral value from grading Conventional value. This methode expected to be a model of studies on jawbone quality in dentistry. The healting RPP patients as a subjects of this study. The methods trabeculation density from mandibular DDIR and conventional periapical radiographs of 116 healthy subjects and 41 RPP patients were evaluated and correlated to obtain transformation formula in the form of regression function. This study was performed Clinic of Dental Radiology and Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia function were then used as a methode to obtain quantitative data from conventional radiographs available. The results were indicated a significant independent variables were included in the regression function (p<0.05). Therefore even no DDIR equipment available, this transformation enable dentists all over Indonesia with only conventional radiographs available, to obtain more detail quantitative trabeculation density data. The conclusion is apart from getting a methode to transform conventional radiographic data into radiometric data equal to data obtained from DDR that more detail and accurate, this study also provides the normal radiographic trabeculation density value of peron 20-40 years as data base for further studies."

"Supra-optimal intake of sodium fluoride (NaF) during early childhood results in formation of irreversible enamel deffects. Monofluorophosphate (MFP) and NaF was considered as less toxic than NaF but equally cariostatic. We compared the potency of MFP and NaF to induce preeruptive sub-ameloblastic cysts and post-eruptive white spots and pits in developing hamster enamel. Hamster pups were injected subcutaneously with either NaF or MFP in equimolar doses of either 9 mg or 18 mg F/kg body weight. At 9 mg F/kg, MFP induced more but smaller sub-ameloblastic cyts with a collective cyst volume twice as large as that induced by NaF. Eight days after F injection, all F-injection groups had formed 4-6 white spots per molar, with an additional 2 pits per molar in the low MFP group. Twenty-eight days after injection, most white spots had turned into pits (5-6 per molar) and only the high MFP group still contained 2 white spots per molar. We conclude that parenterally applied MFP is more potent in inducing enamel defects than NaF. Most white spots formed turn into pits by functional use of the dentition. The higher potency of parerental MFP may be associated with sustained elevated F levels in the enamel organ by enzymatic hydrolysis of MFP by alkaline phosphatase activity."

"Human identification is very important in forensic field. Analysis of teeth and other components in oral cavity can make a significant contribution in the process. Palatal rugae, which is one of the components in oral cavity, have a promising prospect in helping identification process because of its individualistic pattern. In special case whereas victim was burnt and the jaw was edentulous, which identification methods using analysis of finger print and tooth examination was not possible, analysis of palatal rugae would be very helpful in identification process. This paper will discuss application of palatal rugae analysis in forensic identification, the benefits and the limitations. Several challenges in the future so that the usage of analysis of palatal rugae becoming wider and more optimal, will also be discussed."
