Abstrak :
Menurunnya jumlah pemilih dalam pemilu mendorong lembaga politik berupaya meningkatkan partisipasi pemilih. Salah satunya adalah kampanye get-out-thevote dengan memberi tekanan sosial pada pemilih. Ketika merasa diawasi, warga berusaha patuh terhadap norma sosial agar mendapat pujian atau menghindari cemoohan. Emosi juga berperan dalam pengaruh tekanan sosial terhadap perilaku memilih. Dengan menggunakan field experiment, peneliti merandomisasi 135 partisipan ke dalam 3 kelompok treatment, yaitu surat Hawthorne saja, surat Hawthorne bangga, dan surat Hawthorne malu. Hasilnya pemberian tekanan sosial berupa efek Hawthorne menurunkan perilaku memilih serta tidak ada perbedaan antara ketiga kelompok treatment. Dalam diskusi dibahas mengenai alasan menurunnya perilaku memilih. ...... Decreasing voter turnout urge non-profit or candidate to increase voter participation in election. One of the method is get-out-the-vote by using social pressure. When voters are observed, they are exerted to comply with social norms to get praise or to avoid chastisement. Emotions also play role in the effect of social pressure on voting behavior. Using field experiment, researcher randomized 135 participants into 3 treatment groups: “Hawthorne” mailing, "Hawthorne with pride" mailing, and “Hawthorne with shame” mailing. The result was that social pressure in the form of Hawthorne effect decreased voting behavior. There was no difference among the treatment groups.

Abstrak :
Indonesia is the world's third largest democracy (after India and the USA) and the only fully democratic Muslim democracy, yet it remains little known in the comparative politics literature. This book aspires to do for Indonesian political studies what The American Voter did for American political science. It contributes a major new case, the world's largest Muslim democracy, to the latest research in cross-national voting behavior, making the unique argument that Indonesian voters, like voters in many developing and developed democracies, are 'critical citizens' or critical democrats. The analysis is based on original opinion surveys conducted after every national-level democratic election in Indonesia from 1999 to the present by the respected Indonesian Survey Institute and Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting.

Abstrak :
Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tingginya perilaku memilih masyarakat dalam pemilihan umum bupati secara langsung pertama kali di kabupaten Pamekasan tahun 2008. Riset ini mengambil tempat di Kecamatan Tlanakan Kabupaten Pamekasan dengan fokus kajian faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perilaku memilih masyarakat kecamatan Tlanakan kabupaten Pamekasan dalam pemilihan umum bupati Pamekasan tanggal 5 Maret 2008. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah multistage random sampling. Metode pengumpulan data primer menggunakan survei dan analisis dokumen serta literatur untuk data sekunder. Pengolahan data dengan melakukan coding pada setiap jawaban angket penelitian dan diolah dengan menggunakan program Statistic Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Hasil olah data dianalisis melalui Crostabbulation dan statistik Chi- Square. Penekanan tersebut untuk menemukan perbedaan pilihan politik sehingga nampak faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi pemilih. Kerangka teori yang digunakan adalah teori perilaku memilih (voting behavior) dengan dua pendekatan. pertama, pendekatan sosiologis; kedua, pendekatan psikologis. Teori tersebut ditopang oleh Anthony Heath, Seymor Martin Lipset, Huge A Bone dan Austin Ranney. Temuan penelitian ini adalah: pertama, tidak ada perbedaan perilaku memilih masyarakat kecamatan Tlanakan dalam pemilihan bupati Pamekasan tahun 2008 berdasarkan jenis kelamin, umur, pendidikan dan tingkat pendapatan; kedua, hubungan antara perilaku pemilih masyarakat kecamatan Tlanakan kabupaten Pamekasan tahun 2008 dengan jenis kelamin responden sangat rendah, berdasarkan umur responden sangat rendah, berdasarkan tingkat pendidikan rendah dan berdasarkan tingkat pendapatan perbulan rendah. Temuan penelitian ini mengafirmasi temuan Jhon Kessel yang mengatakan bahwa pilihan kepartaian memiliki pengaruh terhadap pilihan seseorang dalam suatu pemilihan umum. Begitu juga dengan konsep Huge A Bone dan Austin Ranney bahwa orientasi terhadap kandidat memiliki dua komponen utama, yaitu: pertama, kualitas instrumen yang dimiliki kandidat sehingga mempengaruhi perilaku memilih seseorang; kedua, kualitas simbolik kandidat. Hal itu terbukti dalam temuan penelitian di kecamatan Tlanakan Kabupaten Pamekasan. ......This research is backgrounded by many voting behavior of people in electing regent directly for the first time in Pamekasan regency 2008. This research was conducted in Tlanakan district, Pamekasan regency with focus of study on factors that influence voting behaviors of Tlanakan district people, Pamekasan regency in electing Pamekasan regent on 5th March 2008. This study uses quantitative method with sampling technique used is multistage random sampling. Method of primary data collection is using survey, analyses document and literature for secondary data. Data processing was conducted by condung each response of research questionnaire and was processed by using Statistics Package for Social Science (SPSS) program. Data processing results were analyzed through Crosstabulatin and ChiSquare statistics. The emphasis is to find differences in political preferences so factors that influence voters are apparent. Theoretical framework used is voting behavior with the two approaches. Firstly, sociological approach; secondly, a psychological approach. The theory is supported by Anthony Heath, Seymour Martin Lipset, Huge A Bone and Austin Ranney. Finding of this research are: firtly, there is no difference in voting behavior in Tlanakan district communities in electing Pamekasan regent 2008 by sex, age, education and income level. Secondly, the correlation between people's voting behavior of Tlanakan district, Pamekasan regency in 2008 with the gender of respondence is very low, based on education level is low and based on monthly income level is low. The findings of this study affirm the findings of John Kessel suggesting that the choice of party has influence on one's choice in an election. Likewise with the concept of A Huge Bone and Austin Ranney that orientation of candidates has two major components, namely: firstly, quality of instruments owned by the candidates and thus influences a person?s voting behavior and, secondly, the symbolic quality of the candidate. This was apparent in the findings of research in Tlanakan district, Pamekasan fregency.
